Ahhh, but unless you buy the lower resolution passive version, you will probably have to pay a few hundred extra for the glasses, less and less active manufacturers are bundling active glasses with sets to keep price comparisons low.

Agreed, it is then up to the purchaser to decide whether to use 3D.

I don't think 3D stands much chance of taking off to any great extent until it becomes glasses free.

Toshiba have launched a 50" glasses free screen, but at £7000, it will have limited sales. Still, the prices will eventually come down and then, 3D may become more mainstream.

The bigger issue is Broadcast SBS 3D isn't a patch on that of 3D Blu Ray.

Any news on Channel 5 getting HD catchup? I am guessing it is a long shot as not even their Youtube is in HD lol.

This TV (currently half price at £500) is on offer with free glasses, free delivery, free stand, Freeview HD, cable tuner*, LED 3D TV with Nectar points too!

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop...=HP1&ID=180412

How much cheaper is it for a non 3D TV version?

I'm not really into sport, but it would be good to catch Eurosport 3 D on VM, just to see what it's like with a linear channel.

*I know I won't get my subscription channels, but, is it technically possible to plug the VM cable directly into the TV from time to time in order to receive the FTA broadcasts?

I would like to do this to have a play with the channels off the EPG eg regional variations and to be able to let this thread know if any channels are testing prior to a possible launch :)

Sony to close Movies 4 Men 2 next week on Freesat and Sky.

Digital Spy Forum is reporting that Sony will close both Movies 4 Men 2 and Movies 4 Men 2 +1 next Thursday at about 6am and launch Sony Movie Channel from 5.30pm and Sony Movie Channel +1 from 6.30pm next Thursday.

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...&postcount=111

Q: WHY ARE YOU POSTING THIS ON HERE WHEN VIRGIN MEDIA DO NOT CARRY THIS CHANNEL?
A: Some Virgin Media viewers have got Freesat or are still USING their old Sky box.

NOTE: I do not know if Sony Movie Channel will broadcast on Freesat.

Whether it's technically possible or not, it's against the T&Cs that you will have accepted, plus it risks putting noise on the network which will affect other customers.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

My research has shown that whether this practice is against VM t&c's is ambiguous and open to interpretation, nevertheless, I wouldn't want to cause any problems for my neighbours. Again, my research about this creating noise on the network shows that opinions vary, which is why I would only do it intermittently for short periods of time.

More info as I find it...

Info thanks to BizAsia.

That set comes with 1 pair of glasses :erm: No you can't plug the cable into the TV, the cable variation is for some local areas in europe where they get their tv like that instead if terestrialy. Like a lot of posts say, the newer models have 3d in at nt really any extra on last years mosels, it's the glasses you can get stung for.

I forgot when this rumour of the Virgin Media target of 80 HD Channels started (I think the year was late 2010) but I think due the way Virgin is working right - they do not care about their viewers only the £ signs. I cant see that target will happen.

That is probably why the number of new TV customers has remained relatively low at 12000 over the last three months despite TiVo.

That's down to a decline in legacy free-TV subs. Virgin continues to enjoy strong pay tv uptake thanks to TiVo. A 50,600 increase in the quarter

An update on Al Jazeera Sport.

They are launching on 1 June in France under the name beIN Sport. A second channel will launch on 8 August. They will have live coverage of the French Ligue 1 football as well as La Liga. They will also cover Super League in France (Catalan Dragons).

There was a story in The Guardian a while back that ESPN were expecting Al Jazeera to bid for Premier League Football.

Al Jazeera's big push in France may not be the end of their sports broadcasting ambitions. They have deep pockets.

It was in the December 2010 presentation to investors.
"We are providing 300 standard definition channels, 30 HD channels at the moment, but with a path to grow to 80 HD channels over the next two years, or three years."

There should be over 60 HD channels by the time the Olympics start.

No way, he is very anal when it comes to Virgin Media and will say don't do it to be on the safe side. Then, if I do, and Pricedrop TV goes down, i'll get the blame :D

If you do some searching (some articles actually come up from this site), there is an argument that the t&c's do not prohibit what I am proposing. This is particularly true if it does not produce noise onto the network, which in itself is open to various opinions.

I work late, so, if I did it, it would be done late at night when they are probably asleep.

IIRC someone tried this (or it might have been a chipped box) and found some different ITV regions (this might have possibly been in the analogue days).

I have also been told that the cable tuners in TV's and the system that VM use are not compatible, so it may not work anyway.

This isn't aimed at you bud.

Still to this day I don’t know why people hang on to this quote as some sort of guarantee from Virgin that 80 HD channels will be delivered within 3 years. There is nothing in the quote which says “We will deliver 80 HD channels” or “We plan to have 80 HD channels”. The quote simply suggests they have a path to grow to 80 HD channels, and nothing more than that. I don’t see that as any kind or promise, pledge or solid commitment.

If people are taking that as some for of guarantee, they better be ready to be disappointed. I don't think there will even be 80 HD channels broadcasting by December 2013.

Companies are like Politicians in that they depend on vague statements to make themselves sound good while not providing anything specific enough but the reality is that anybody can make this kind of statement without any fear of being caught in a lie.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Just off the back of that little exchange about advertising, I got a letter through today urging me to switch to cable, because apparently Virgin aren't aware that I'm already their customer. What struck me was that the leaflet included pictures of TV screens showing screen shots from shows on Sky channels. I can see why Virgin would want to make it clear that you can get Sky channels on cable, but not what advantage there is for Sky-yet surely they've okayed the use of these pictures?

It can be an extra.

They have had two extra channels active before on DAB - one was for GP coverage while another (I think cricket) was also on Xtra.

I think we will not see any new channels on Virgin until after Olympics so Virgin can reuse all the channels left over from the BBC Olympics Channels all in SD and HD plus Eurosport 3D that are all coming in July and early August for the Olympics.

Maybe Virgin have got deals done for launch after Olympics or they are signing deals with broadcasters right now for all we know.

As Sony have says I have seen no news of Virgin being in talks with Sony UK for this channel.

I'm not sure if they are in talks or not yet, but I believe that they made the above statement about wanting to concentrate on Sky and VM on their facebook page.

Diva TV is preparing to make a comeback on satellite. It is not yet known if this is because it is relaunching (in which case it may return to VM too) or simply to serve as a placeholder in connection with the Sky EPG rules (in which case i'm sure it won't return to VM until/if the new channel that it is really for decides to launch on cable)

It doesn't look like there are plans, as of yet, for Sony TV to launch on Virgin.

Sony have posted the following on their Facebook page, in reply to people asking if the channel will be on Virgin:

"Sony TV (UK): Hi guys, currently the Sony Movie Channel will sit on the Sky platform, channel 323 and 324 for +1. if our plans change for other platforms we'll let you know. Thanks."

I do not why NBC who did own Diva TV are testing for as they have sold Diva TV +1 EPG Channel slot to an other broadcaster with Diva TV Slot being sold to Channel 4 for More4 +2 on Sky.

Maybe Style +1 is set to launch on Sky?

That's a pity. They aren't really launching with a bang. Most of their current "roster" of movies have been regulars on Sony TV in recent months such as Panic Room, Secret Window and The Forgotten. I suspect however that movies on Sony TV might start drying up shortly with the launch of this new channel.

What date did they say that Chad?

On 3 February 2012 at 14:42 they said in response to this question:

"Is Sony TV coming to Freesat in 2012?"

Sony TV (UK) "Hi Samuel. There are no immediate plans for Freesat although we are constantly looking at new platforms. But currently trying to consoldiate our presence on Sky and Virgin Media. Thanks!"

Source:http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1617262

I suppose we must go by the most up to date statement.

Thanks. Yours is the most recent statement, so I guess it isn't coming from the start. A lot of new channels gauge how popular they are on satellite first as more people can get it, before entering into a contract with VM.

I imagine that this is why we don't get a lot of channels on VM from launch day. On the plus side, this does mean we are shielded from a lot of dross and don't have channels coming on and off the EPG every five minutes!

It's almost unheard-of for cable to carry a channel from launch. The only examples in recent memory regarding VM are SSF1, PBS and ITV1 +1.

BBC portfolio cut as ITV takes French Open.

It never rains but it pours for poor old Auntie. Just a month after the Royal & Ancient Golf Club warned the BBC that its dwindling interest in golf could threaten its hold on future television coverage of The Open, ITV will rip another plank from the corporation's platform as a holder of major sports rights with more than 150 hours of coverage of the French Open tennis tournament.

Although the BBC's commitment to the year's second Grand Slam event sometimes appeared half-hearted, with much of the coverage available only via the red button, the loss is significant in that it demonstrates ITV's determination to challenge for a broad range of sports rights.

Bleeding Beeb: Sport the BBC has lost

Cricket England Test Matches – lost rights to Channel 4 in 1999.

World Rally Championship Lost rights to Channel 4 in 2001.

Boat Race Lost rights in 2004, regained in 2010.

Football FA Cup and England home internationals – lost in 2008 to ITV.

Rugby union Anglo-Welsh Cup – lost rights in 2009 to Sky.

Cricket The Ashes – lost rights to show highlights of 2010-11 series.

Athletics Lost the 2011 and 2013 World Championships to Channel 4 (BBC has rights for 2015 and 2017).

Formula One Reduced from this season to just 10 races, Sky will show full calendar.

Golf Masters – last year lost rights to all four days to Sky, but still hold rights to the final two days.

Tennis French Open – to be broadcast on ITV from this year.

Horse Racing Grand National – will be shown on Channel 4 from next year.

As Sony have says I have seen no news of Virgin being in talks with Sony UK for this channel.
I don't get this. In your post, which I also quoted, it clearly states that M4M will be changing to the Sony Movies Channel; or whatever. So is this a different channel to the one that Sony says is on Sky only for the moment?
