I've got files in internal memory also, for an all singing phone there are some basic issues you just dont get on others, stick with what works , the usb connection has been a bugbear from release. phone works on kies but tomtom and hanbase it cannot find phone.

I dont like Kies. I find it too hard and complicated to use

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

When I plugged in my S3 to usb, the sd card appeared as another drive letter. Installing the S3 drivers will give you more options though. They tend to hide the drivers on their site though, so they can get you to install Kies.

If you have a wireless network then you can transfer things without using the usb. Airdriod on the phone lets you use a browser to do lots of stuff with a nice interface. For simply moving files I use EFS File explorer on the phone which connects to a windows share to copy/paste.

Googling on the fault it now says my phone should be rooted, why does this make a difference, what is rooted, why is mine unrooted surely all phones are the same S3 that is. Busybox is another name thrown into the equation, all this crap just to get a usb sync because it now has mtp.

At a guess I wonder if it's because the S3 connects using MTP in Windows, rather than allowing you to mount the SD card directly

So to change that you need root access

Qtx 11-12-2012 13:49

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Pretty sure you don't need to be rooted to sync stuff.

Busybox is generally installed when you root a phone and can be used by many different apps.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

What happens if I root my phone, why is this not standard feature, will this now affect how it works

Qtx 11-12-2012 15:03

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Well android is an open system but manufacturers like to lock it down for licencing and support reasons I guess. So if your phone breaks and they see it is rooted they are likely to say that your warranty is invalidated as you have modified it.

Rooting opens up all the potential of the phone but at the same time means you can tinker in more ways that could potentially break it. In normal use this will probably never happen and to be honest I have never have a problem with either of my 2 phones that I rooted, even though I tinker with a lot of things most people would never touch.

That being said, there is a chance you can kill your phone in the initial rooting process if you did something wrong. The flashing changes the bootloader I think.

Once rooted there are easy ways to backup your phone, install custom roms which can make the phone run faster, better interfaces etc. For me rooting allowed me to run some network tools that wouldn't run on non-rooted due to the artificial limitations. The S3 is good enough in most areas for me not to even consider flashing another rom on to it.

The only downside so far that I have seen is Sky Go wont work on a rooted device, although a workaround is normally found.

qasdfdsaq 11-12-2012 16:33

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Rooting is quite literally the equivalent of gaining access to the Administrator account on Windows.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Ok I've taken the plunge and tried rooting, but i'm getting an error in recovery mode, E:\ signature verification failed, I copied cwm superuser zipfile to sd card but keep getting this error.

Qtx 11-12-2012 23:13

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Not something I have seen before. What guide are you following and what version of android is your phone? There are different ways for different versions and different models of phone.

Only done it twice myself and on my S3 it was using Odin and Cf-Root. Didn't copy anything to any cards, just ran the programs on my while connected via usb and in debugging mode. This does flash the kernel to make recovery and phone backups easier, as well as a way of going back to a stock unrooted rom.

The superuser app only runs on an already rooted phone I think. Any program that needs root privs is granted it by that app.

royaltiger 11-12-2012 23:44

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

I'll try and find the guides, it was for T-mobile ,I was using the Odin and clockwork mod file if that makes sense

Qtx 11-12-2012 23:54

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Yeah it does sound like it is along the right path. Would be good to know if your phone is currently Android 4.1.1 jelly bean or 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich. In the settings menu on the phone right at the bottom is an option > About Device, will tell you this as well as kernel/build numbers which can be useful.

Before I rooted I did a lot of googling for the versions I had before finding the right guide. I assume from what I saw that there are different methods and exploits for each one.

I actually dont need to take card out as its not syncing that way either, my old card from tomtom opened up program as soon as pushed into reader but its not doing what i thought it would.

Yeah when I used to work for them you could just go in to a shop to collect one although you needed to call CS to marry it up to your account.

Yes i plan to do that in an hour after the post comes, last time the call took 45mins though before it was answered and it is India, failing that i will go into a shop at the weekend.

I think T-Mobile outsource to Manila not India but with their merger they could be using any country in the world...

Call them between 8 and 9am for the best chance to get through to the UK (if he/she has a Welsh accent even better - the Merthyr callcentre is regularly voted the best for customer satisfaction).

With such a rapid take-up of micro-sim phones (4s, S3) the process of connecting it to your account should be a lot easier than when I was there - it used to take around 6 hours.

I have a Virgin S3 and have updated to 4.1.2 via Kies however it did take some time. The process appears to stall once the files are downloaded and if you look at task manager it reports that Kies is not responding. Just leave it alone and eventually it will finish the upgrade. BTW I tried an OTA upgrade but got the same message as SnoopZ

I tried to upgrade via Kies, it had downloaded it and the screen on the phone said upgrading, then the Kies software said it couldn't connect to the phone and told me to take the battery out and restart the device.

Nervously i did this even though the message on the phone told me not to! Luckily the phone is still working and not bricked, so i think i will wait for the OTA update rather than risking bricking it.

My Kies version (latest I think) won't let you do a firmware upgrade over wi-fi.

I should only be a few days to be able to do it via OTA. I wasnt able to do it last night as says on latest update but tried this morning and was there so hopefully it will be soon.

The multiview is good and to be able to customize the notification panel. Not sure about the rest of the features. Im glad copy and paste is now fixed

There isn't anything the Light Flow developer can do to fix it, the fix has to come from Samsung.

If or when you get 4.2..let me know about battery life. I think that version has something that sucks the battery (not in a good way :) )

Compared to the One X the battery life on my S3 is night and day. Quite literally :)

Still I always carry a spare and with the pair I can easily manage 15+ hours of internet/music/video consumption which is plenty for someone who needs a decent amount of sleep. With light usage it lasts 4 days.

I'd take a look at what's sucking the battery either in battery details or with an app like System Panel App that tells you the exact CPU consumption of every application. Then Titanium Backup to disable the sucky ones

Not had issues with the battery use, even though I don't use the power saving option. First phone I have had that I have not installed advanced task killer on, just doesn't seem needed. Have light flow installed like you (awesome app :D) so I doubt that is the issue. I keep GPS off most of the time and usually remember to turn off wifi when I go out. So maybe those make a difference.

The battery menu under settings isnt always useful finding the drain though.

My brother in law asked me if he should get the S3 or the One X. Told him to get the S3 as he could change the battery and add more storage.

Naturally he got the One X against my advice but hasn't mentioned any battery problems. Did get a phone call from him asking for advice because it had frozen and wouldn't power off. Without thinking I told him to pull the battery out :p: He had to wait a day and half for the juice to run out and turn off, which I guess it pretty quick.

What you want is to find out what is consuming power, and fix that. Ignore everything else.

Have light flow installed like you (awesome app :D) so I doubt that is the issue. I keep GPS off most of the time and usually remember to turn off wifi when I go out. So maybe those make a difference..

I have Wifi off when out and GPS off as well. The light flow issue is a bug in the phone according to a post above. Ill see how i get on and try and compare each day

I am still figuring out what is different, multi view will be useful as long as it doesnt drain the battery.

As I said that's perfectly normal. Android deliberately caches all applications it can in the background so that if/when you run them they start faster.

I use my S2 as a backup. Now it's been updated to 4.1.2 it's actually working decently, like it should have from the beginning...

I wonder if one of you might be able to help me?

Following a recent update I no longer see the quick launch audio/video apps on the notification bar then I insert my earphones (see attached).

I think this got turned off once on my old S1 but I can't find it in the settings.

If it's the same on the S3 as the S2 with Jelly Bean then there is an option under Settings > Accessory > Audio Applications

I never actually noticed that myself. Can't find where to enable it.

I hope not, I used this feature a lot. I'm getting sick of software "updates" that reduce funtionallity.

Its been replaced with page buddy.

Settings > display and then enable page buddy.

It will add a new home screen panel when earphones are connected. Containing Widgets to do with audio and video

The upgrade, previously announced for the firm's Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, introduces Page Buddy, a feature that predicts what the users wish to do based on their actions. For example, if one were to plug in headphones, the software will load the music player.

He mentions apps that'll do it automatically for you. I use Juice Defender, it's very good.

Had some USB adapters turn up today. Ordered 3 different ones from Hong Kong which added up to a grand total of £1.47 with free postage :p:

Was done as an experiment and they took 21 days to get here. Surprising quality considering they cost less than 50p each. All work ok too, plugged a USB keyboard, mouse and flash pen into the S3 as well as wireless dongles for others too. Weird having a mouse pointer in your android browser. Thinking of getting a mhl cable now in the hope it can be used at the same time as a mouse and keyboard for easy TV screen browsing anywhere there is a HDMI port.
