A few of us emailed back after the Dean email and got a "stock" response from Cindy Rose. Basically it said take this offer or wait for the future if this is not for you.

There was no new technical or pricing details in that email though, the free install in April is a new development :D

Cheers

I've managed to place my TiVo order early https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/04/69.gif

VM called me offering a free phone line as I am on 50meg BB, I said I was about to jump ship from Sky for all my services on 11th April (due to the TiVo offer). The very helpful sales lady said she would call me back on the 11th and put my phone line and TiVo order through at the same time. She actually called me today and said she was able to put the TiVo order through early.

The only down side is that the earliest install date which suited both parties is April 20th https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/04/70.gif

So it's bye bye Sky HD and hello VM TiVo!!

Not necessarily. If it's done like "lucky 1000", you didn't need any details from the letter to sign up. You just needed to know your name.

This concerns me greatly. As a patient pre-registered customer, I am concerned that Virgin Media are allowing ANY customer to get an earlier chance at a TiVo than the 11 April date I have been given.

This person should have been told the following:

"If you are a pre-registered customer, you will get an email 11 April allowing you to order in advance of general release.

If you have not pre-registered, you can order from 18 April.

Sorry, you cannot order now."

I had suspicions when he quoted the ring back to get it ordered because of commission. I think that sounds more like Sky than VM.I can't recall anyone ever mentioning commission in the many years I've been on cable.
Maybe it would apply to the shops but that is for a different reason.

I think this could be that the poster has stated he had an email notifying him of 11th April offer where it was said the activation fee would be waivered for April.

If it's the same email we all got this was not stated anywhere.

If you are not on the channel it wants to record it will show a warning saying that it needs to change channel

Or if you are and you try and change you should get a warning saying it'll need to cancel a recording to change the channel

Thanks clinteaston and Stephen for your quick responses

Perfect Choice 08-04-2011 17:19

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

But when it cancels a planned recording it then goes and finds that programme when it is repeated so it can record it. If you think about it, this is what you manually do yourself on V+ when you set up ther recordings in the first place or if series recordings, V+ then alerts you of a clash if more than 2 recordings, while Tivo will just go and find an alternative recording itself. So nothing to worry about if Tivo picks 3 recordings at the same time and you are watching something which needs a tuner already e.g. already watching live TV on another channel which will certainly happen with me, as often watching live TV at 9pm while several recordings on other channels commence so this will be my clash time.

http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...-battle-941459

Quote:

A legal battle has risen up in the USA which could have global repercussions, with giants Time Warner Cable and Viacom filing lawsuits against each other over the right to stream channels to devices like the Apple iPad.

The row sees cable companies take on channel providers over what devices they can stream channels to.

In this case, Time Warner Cable believes that it has the right to stream the channels that it shows onto devices that can be used like televisions (ie tablets and phones). And many channel owners (like Viacom) believe that they should be the ones to decide and benefit financially.

So, Time Warner Cable has gone to the New York court in order to ask it to 'confirm its view' on the contractual allowance to stream, and Viacom has filed a suit claming breach of contract and copyright violations.

The UK's television landscape is very different, with the likes of Sky choosing to stream its own channels (thus neatly avoiding any problem) but problems could arise if the satellite giant, or BT or cable provider Virgin Media for that matter, started to stream channels that they don't own.
As if Sky would allow VM to do that. They don't even let VM show Sky content in TiVo's mini-window within the EPG.

I hope TWC win, they've paid for the content already, as so has the customer, what he/she does with it after receiving the content is their business (excluding creating pirate copies of course).

The boxes are on slightly different platforms within VM. It's a contractual obligation put on Virgin Media from BSkyB.

They don't want any of their content shown in the quarter screen on TiVo.

Yes, the application needs to be rewritten for TiVo. Obviously there are far more non-TiVo boxes, so they are doing that one first.

There's no background copy, but you can play back a whole series without having to start each episode separately.

Hey my new Onkyo AV Receiver has a preset display option so that when I switch to the input (HDMI) from the new Tivo coming my way it will display "TIVO" on the front panel. HOW COOL IS THAT :D A TIVO ready surround system.

There's no background copy, but you can play back a whole series without having to start each episode separately.

Well thats means its better to wait until a series finishs to copy, but can thery not a function like playlist to put shows into a list and copy them without having to start each episode seperately

As if Sky would allow VM to do that. They don't even let VM show Sky content in TiVo's mini-window within the EPG.

I hope TWC win, they've paid for the content already, as so has the customer, what he/she does with it after receiving the content is their business (excluding creating pirate copies of course).

That would do my head in with no mini-window , all channels have mini-window on my Sky+HD box ;)

Yeah but all content-providers aren't as petty as Sky. ;)

I wouldn't blame VM for not putting any links to Sky content in TiVo's Discovery Bar, just in retaliation. Actually, I wonder if the channel providers paid VM for being put on there.

I am sure I read a article recently that hinted the discovery bar would become a money maker so I guess there will be some money involved.

Also in another thing that has got me stumped about the TIVO box is when we had the last code drop AE6 the HDMI was not working ( there was a picture and no sound )?
I thought that it may be the TV, But now we have had another code drop I thought that I would try the HDMI again and it is all working now.

So when they released the newest code drop could that have solved the problem of the HDMI handshake that people have been having problems with (answers on the back of a postcard)

Not at the moment, we are working with the BBC to re-add this. We now use the web version of BBC iPlyer on TiVo, so some extra coding is required to intergrate further.

The Web version is so much better though, more content, more HD etc and radio too :)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Although the proportion could fall now that the iPlayer has been separated from the rest of Virgin’s on demand offer – a move against the cableco’s wishes – it is still early days for viewer usage patterns to emerge. Broadband TV News understands that the link between the iPlayer and TiVo may be restored later in the year.

Doesn't sound like they will change it , however the full version is probably a better option. Sky want the beeb to pick up the cost to build them a personalised version to run on their STB , the way it reads is that the Beeb may build another version but at the platforms cost.

Not like a Virgin
Virgin, with its next-gen TiVo box, has packed many new features into its service – from web content to recommendations to the ability to scroll backwards through the EPG and watch old programmes through catch-up – and Lenz did admit that this puts the company "in a good place," but he is a little dubious about so much focus on features, believing Sky's simpler approach is still working.
"Innovation and product development just for the sake of it is useless," said Lenz.
"It is all fun, but you have to create the product and land it in the marketplace and make it a successful business.
"We have to make calls all of the time where something is a very good idea, but right now is not the moment to make it successful.
"If your messaging can't focus on that product, then this can cause problems in the market."
I'm sure the Sky fanboys on here will agree with Sky though... :D

No offence but can't see how it's come back to bite them when Sky has more Sky+ subscribers worldwide than TIVO. Sky+ is used in the Uk and Sky Italia and I believe in other countries .

I don't think there have been any changes in this area. It's an intermittent fault that I've had occasionally. Unplugging and replugging the HDMI is the quickest way to fix it.

Will not happen as the Beeb will only allow an interface that they approve and without flash Sky boxes can't do it.

Plus Sky would have to pay the beeb to re-encode the videos etc from flash to another format.

VM only have bbc catchup on the V+ because the beeb control the look and feel of the epg.

VM arn't part of youview for the same reason as the beeb etc demand VM use the same look and feel epg and VM are going over to tivo epg which is not acceptable.

Sky only interested in youview because it now has decided to allow pay to view content where up till now Sky have attacked it.

Unless Sky can do a deal with the beeb etc to store content on computers in the phone exchange and to use their own anytime epg then no catchup will appear due to Sky having to pay BT for data usage and it would cost them a fortune.

Anyway with Sky having spent 6 months trying to roll out anytime+ and still not having it on all boxes how do they think that they could do catchup any other way.......:p:
