Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

How is everyone doing. I have got back into my walking again and so far pain free so hope it stays like that. I couldn't get out today as the showers have been really heavy so instead done all the things I needed to do around the house so I suppose that was dong exercise as well. Since I started doing the walking again a bit of my stomach has started to reduce so I'm going to keep the exercise up as long as the pain doesn't come back.

It great to be pain free again and to be able to do the small things I took for granted. Who thought that I would start to Appricate being able to do housework but it was so so good

Good Stuff. A fit woman with a clean house, every man's dream. :D

Seriously though, that's good you're feeling the benefit. Listen to your body though, don't push it if you feel even the slightest pain returning.

Dont know about the fit part but I was getting so bored and in pain all them time it was so so good even to do boring housework. I take pain killers at night so that helps. I have reduced them from taking them during the day and so far so good. Thanks so much for your support. It means a lot :hugs::hugs:

My moan today fitness wise. Early morning run, cold, wet and I didn't tape up my hairy man-nipples. As I result I look like I've been shot twice

I caught sight of you pacemakers on the stage at the warm up but never saw you again. I'm sure I couldn't have passed you Deek without noticing your luminous top;) It's also probable that the devastatingly handsome guy couldn't make it either. I didn't notice anybody fitting that description anyway;)

Anyhow finished in 48:09 so very pleased with that. The run didn't quite pan out the way I expected. I was hoping to run sub 5min kilometres for the first 6 or 7k and then hang on to get a sub 50 time.

I didn't get doing that because it's so busy at the start. I couldn't get a steady pace at all. Got through 2 Km in about 11 minutes so thought I'd struggle to get sub50. I got a good pace going for the next 7km but was running out of steam in the last km. I now wish I'd dug in a bit and I might have got under 48 minutes...... still there's always next year. :)....or the Great Scottish run in September...:D

Ah I ended up doing the 55 minute pace, that's why you didn't see the handsome chap... :erm:
Was nice just to jog it slowly and not knock my pan out, ended up doing 54 minutes and a bit, picked up too much speed on the downhill sections!

I'm aiming for about 13st 4lbs which puts me nicely in the 'ideal' section of the BMI - all I've been doing is being a bit more careful with what I eat and drink, and doing some exercise. I actually made it to the gym twice last week.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

You must be so proud. I have been able to go back to walking as well since last week and so far no pain and it feels so good. I cant go to the gym as I'm not allowed to do heavy exercise but just walking alone is a big plus for me.

Me :) I have been doing for 2 years now

I'm 181 CM tall ( Just under 6 foot)

Starting weight was 107 LB (around 7 stone) = BMI 13.5

As of today im at 141 LB (arround 10 stone) = BMI 19.3

Gained 34 lb between '09 and '11

Target is to get to 160 LB which would give me a BMI of 22

Only another 19 LB to go :D

6 miles up and down stairs and hills then an hour on UFC trainer for Kinnect.

Now absolutely knackered and eyeing up the wine rack to try and recover.

Signed up for a 16 mile race round the southside of Glasgow in October so need to get the mileage up for that and the Glasgow half marathon in September. If I can keep training on up till the end of October I might be able to stop the usual winter shutdown that ends up with pain in the New Year when I try to get back to the level of fitness I had the year before.

Assuming you aren't in the first wave then you won't get to run at your own pace until you are over the Kingston Bridge so you get about 1 1/2 miles to get into it.

Aside from that its a nice course, a bit through Bellahouston and Pollok park and a bit of a slog between miles 10-12. No big hills so if you are doing a long run of 6-7 miles (10K) now then a long run adding a mile or so each week till 2 weeks before the race with either 2 or 3 shorter runs each week should see you through no problems.

Wow. That's some serious weight gain! At a starting BMI of 13.5 it sounds like you needed it. What have you been putting on (mostly), muscle or fat?

Thankyou! My weight was that low because i genuinely never feel hungry or thirsty, I have to consciously think to go for a meal or a drink not entirely sure why!

Most of the weight has been muscle (Not that i have much even still LOL) my fat percentage is around 10% I seem to struggle to gain fat weight

I know what you mean. At 1m75 I struggle to hit 60Kg. At least that puts me in the low normal BMI range, so I don't have to hit the gym. (Which strikes me as incredibly tedious and boring. I'd rather be out riding my bike) :).

Worst part is I have a dairy allergy. Pretty much everything high calorie has dairy in LOL

Some of the stuff I was eating when i was really trying to put on weight was ridiculous though average breakfast was something like a 'friend breakfast sandwich' as i called it which is 4 rashes of bacon, then 3 sausages cut in half on-top of the bacon fried egg sunny side down then fried garlic mushrooms on the top

This is strange, well one part. I'm trying to bulk up a little. Most of the foods I eat digest well although I find it hard to put on weight, no major complaints I just have to work a bit harder. Strange part is milk, if I drink blue/green top I notice my face putting on a little weight but nothing happens when I drink gold top. I stopped drinking blue/green top and brought a bottle of gold top last week and nothing. I even drank glasses of it. Are they doing something they shouldn't to blue/green top ?

Cheers. I'll get round but I've dropped almost 5 minutes from my 10K time from last year so no way I'll get near last years time of 1:38:25. Probably between 1:45 and 1:50 and I'll be very happy indeed.

I could be near your time, this years not last years. ;) I'm hoping for under 1:50 but would be happy with anything under 2 hours. I took your advice and increased my long run slightly each week and did the full distance 2 weeks ago. I was just under 1:50 but it was perfect conditions and I choose a very flattish route.

The 1/2 route isn't too bad. St. Vincent street is right at the start so you are still bunched up and going relatively slowly, the run up onto the Kingston bridge is steep and after that there are really only a couple of small-ish hills in Bellahouston and Pollok park to worry about.

If you can get 1:50 in a training run I'd reckon you'll be round tomorrow in 1:45 or so.

I've been running up that bit of St Vincent Street as far as West Campbell St. once a week as part of my training, jogging into work. I've already ran 9 miles by the time I get to George Square so I don't think my legs will be quite as heavy tomorrow at that location.

I doubt if I'll do 1:45, the training run was flat, Uddingston to Parkhead and back - hardly a slope never mind a hill. ;) Whatever time I do it'll be my best official time ever. :)

Protein and complex carbohydrates should hit the spot. I eat oats and protein powder, which works nicely.

My body is really lean, again no major complaints last thing I want is for that to backfire but I want to try gain a bit of weight. I'm 21, I like to stay away from fatty stuff and eat proper foods although I'll admit it doesn't always happen. Its as if proper foods just goes in and out without helping healing anything.

I've got protein powder. I did usually mix it with blue or green top but because my face puffs up as a result of drinking blue/green I switched to gold which just goes against logics but it somehow didn't affect me like blue/green did

Guess who was a big drama queen and collapsed at the end of his first half marathon with severe dehydration.:(

An hour in the medical tent getting 3 bags of saline drip eventually sorted me out but it's certainly an experience I'll never forget. I've never experienced such pain in my life as when the leg cramps kicked in. The medical staff were fantastic though.

Pleased with my time of 1:47:24 but missed out on the the experience of the great atmosphere down the finishing straight. I have no recollection of the last 600 yards so I'll have to do it again next year. ;)

I'm not sure my better half will agree since she spent over an hour with my two daughters at our prearranged meeting place wondering what was happening.

LOL. Sounds like fun. I bonked on a cycle ride last week. Didn't eat properly, and did a 1000 foot climb onto the moors in Yorkshire straight out of the parking lot. I managed to get to the top, but had blurry vision, had to sit down and nearly threw up. Wife managed to force a muesli bar down my throat which helped. Fifteen minutes later I was back on the bike to continue the 30 miles up and down the moors. Not something I want to experience again though...

On the upside: managed to beat my PB on our 20 mile training ride.Upped the average speed from 14.4 to 14.8 MPH. Mostly due to the lack of wind, but nice anyway :)

You tried and so what if you made a mistake and didn't drink as much as you were supposed to. You mad and effort and made a mistake and the next time you will be more sensible and learn from your mistake. We all learn from mistakes so dont be hard on yourself. Well done for the what you did achieve ;)

Definitely learned a couple of things. I drank about 3 pints of water the 3 hours leading up to the race. When I got to the start half an hour early I thought I'd have time to pee but the queues were horrendous so I ran the first 4km with a full bladder. One of the advantages of being male is that bushes can become very convenient. ;)

I got water at every station but find it difficult to drink when running. I was pouring most of it over my head to cool down on what was a warm day. I won't make that mistake again.

Well you have a year to practice on drinking the water while you run and do and you wont be long getting used to it. Good lesson you learned is that the water wont go from your head to your stomach but from the mouth to your belly lol

Ouch! Quite a few casualties yesterday. My knee went about 9 miles in and I saw plenty of piles of sawdust at the finishing line. :erm:

Good time. I ended up just under the 2 hour mark at 1:58. 20 minutes worse than last year.

I was longer than that in the medical tent. I'd rather have been another 20 mins behind you than go through that again.

I saw my photos at the finish on marathon-photos.com, I look totally knackered and confused. No memory of the home straight whatsoever:(

Ditto :) I'm 186 cm tall (6'1 and a bit) and I can't break 10 stone.

I have a slightly overactive thyroid though so no matter how much I eat I struggle to gain any weight

Not that bad. The pain goes away pretty quickly after the run is over and only returns if I try 8 miles or longer at a hard pace. :(

Love that this thread is still going, won't scare you with any further pictures of me for now. I'm presently carb cycling to force those last bits of fat to go away.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

It says 100% of the carb calories you consume need to be from vegetables, whole unprocessed grains, legumes, and fruit - nothing else.

Boy you must be really dedicated Igni, good on you for getting to this stage, but I fear this is just too restrictive a diet for the likes of myself. :erm: Post another photo when you have reached your goal, won't you?

PS I put on 3lbs on our hols in Paignton. :(

Having fallen off the wagon several times lately, and with less than 3 weeks to go to Tenerife, I've decided to try additional means in an effort to lose some more weight before I go.
I'm told that by using this machine I can 'drop a dress size in 3 weeks'. I'm giving it my best shot, so I have been 10 times on the machine (over 3 days) and also watching my diet. So far have lost 4llbs since Tuesday. Have also taken measurements of bust, waist, hips etc.,:):):)

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Still no closer to acheiving my goal of one arm pull ups so I've decided to change my training methods. Started to do pull ups using 'fat grips' that increase the diameter of the bars that you hang on to and have also added 10-15kg of weight to myself by means of a weight belt/chain/weight disk(s) when I'm chinning.
Lets see if that breaks through the plateau.......:)

Running is starting to take it's toll on the poor old knees lately so been doing a lot of XC trail riding lately. Just invested in a Garmin Edge 800 GPS/Computer with the heart rate monitor and cadence sensor to make sure I'm not slacking ;) and one of those Holy Moses front lights with the LIPO batery pack disguised as a water bottle..... end of BST isn't keeping me in!

Not sure if XC trails is the way to go if your knees are suffering?

Wife and I just finished a 550km bike ride from Burgos to Santiago de Compostella in Spain (not in one day). The Spanish hills were interesting. Not the crazy gradients you get in the UK, but they go on forever. Was very pleased with my 22tooth granny. Managed to get to the top of most of them with depleted thighs, but without being out of breath. Good workout all-round.

Nothing too technical as we're riding hardtails (no excuse some would say but I am not that good a rider). We've done the red and black runs at Llandegla which aren't that taxing on the limbs and there are plenty of other trails along those lines around these parts. Congrats on the big ride, beats bumming around on the beach :)

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

I'm close to 46, and was kinda shocked when I weighed in at 14 stone 4, I'm 5 10 tall and was a slight build, used to just eating like a gannet and never putting on any weight, (I used to be around the 10 stone mark forever)

Still got skinny arms/legs but a umm 'rounder' body so I've started on a diet/exercise session. Apparently I'm supposed to be around 12.5 stone or so, but I'm going to aim for 13 stone and then 'review' I understand as a 46 yr old that I'm not gong to expect a body like a 25 yr old.

Week 1, I lost 6 pounds, so am now at 13 stone 12, which isn't bad for a start, i'll see again next Tuesday what Week 2 results are.

Exercise wise, I'm walking, and we just got a exercise bike/sit-up bench and some dumbbells, which I think will work ok (being ripped/muscly doesn't interest me, but being 'not porky' does)

Food intake, I'm being really careful about fat/diary products, eating a lot of stuff like eggs/porridge/chicken/fish

Stuff which was an eye opener was Bread, i'm eating raisons/fruit more instead of sweet stuff/cakes

I guesstimate I'm doing between 1,000- 1,500 calories/day (ish)

I'll let you guys know how it goes, hopefully I'll hit 13 stone within a month or so.

Oh yes, to add, I quit smoking in 2002 and I don't drink either.

The first scales, I tried(in the shops) were out and I thought I was 14 stone 14, so just shy of 15 stone, but when I got my own scales and weighed myself sans clothes/pocket clutter I was only 14 stone 4 phewww, (I notice clothes and stuff can add up to 6 pounds!

I was very skinny as a youth. I never broke through 10 stone until I was in my early 30s, after a trip to the states off course :-). I peaked at 13.5 stone last year and probably just over 12 now.

I'm quite happy with my weight, I'd just like to redistribute it somewhat. :D

Don't fixate too much on what the scales say. I think how you feel is more important. If you are tracking your weight try to stick to the same time once a week.

Well done techguy keep up the good work!

I'm on week 2 with this
machine, lost between 5-6lbs last week and I'm really pleased with the results.:):):) Don't know if it's psychological but I do feel more toned up already. It's early days but I am hoping to lose another 7lbs in the next 2 weeks. Total lost so far (including pre machine) since 27th July 19-20lbs.

Come on girls how are you all doing?

Ah looks interesting, presumably a 21st Century update of ye olde vibrating belt machine

Now my tummy isn't getting in the way so much, I do need to start using the sit up bench.

(all my excess weight is abdominal)

I'm hoping that 4 weeks total of the regime will get me to 'weight review' time.

Remember with weight loss the first 2 weeks are when you lose the most weight and after that its generally 1 to 3 pounds per week so you should not be disappointed at all as its still going downwards and just continue what you are doing and you will get down to a weight you are happy with.

Swift check in after holiday and stuff I peaked at a shade over 15 stone, thanks to a low carb diet I've dropped back to 13st 9lb, currently have a 34 inch waist and a 44 inch chest. Working on getting waist smaller, chest is fine :)

That's uncanny. After a week of all inclusive fare in the Costa del Sol I've got a 44 inch waist and 34 inch chest. ;)

At least it feels that way. I haven't ventured near the scales yet but I suspect they'll groan a bit :D

I've been a bit lax in reporting here - sorry.

however I haven't been lax in actually *losing* the weight.

I've reached my target weight of: 12 stone 10 pounds which is just about right for my height and build, now I look lean but not skinny.

My starting weight was 14 stone 4 pounds back in October, so I have lost what? a stone and a half yayy.

(It's nice to be able to wear a 32 inch waist trouser again instead of a tightish 36 inch...)

I meant to post this a week or so back, but my RL has been a bit hectic.

After a severe attack of cantbearsed-itis, a few niggly injuries and a cold that appeared impossible to shift I've finally managed to get some motivation back and getting myself exercising a bit more regularly.

Just as well as I'm about 1 & 1/2 stone heavier than I should be and well off the pace I was at for running a 5 or 10K.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Resurrecting an old thread, as I myself have been trying to make positive changes in my life, depression and social anxiety, plus no job = mega weight gain.

I'm embarrassed to admit I weighed myself back at the end of Feburary and I was a massive 346lbs (Or 24.71 stone)...yikes :(

So I started the atkins diet, after a few months the body adapted to it, so I had to come off, but have gone back on it again last week

So far, I've lost 67lbs, or some 4.78 stones (nearly 5 stone) in 6-7 months, which isn't "too" bad, given how the diet kept stalling.

Am currently at 279.2lbs or 20 stone.

I need to introduce more exercise to get rid of the rest.
