How difficult is it for Virgin Media to perhaps ADD some SD channels, seriously?

They're focusing on HD which they charge a premium for to its customers to recieve as well as a requiring a new box which they charge for too if you're not a new customer, but fail to realise they have millions of Non HD customers too?

With Bravo and Channel One closing, what do they plan on replacing them with? Oh yes, more HD Channels.

How about Virgin use some subscriber money and get some more SD channels on the system. Perhaps the other 2 CBS channels, and more that Sky have and offer to customers but Virgin seem unable to like offer?
(In before comments like OMG SWITCH TO SKY LOLOL)

I think its ridiculus the way Virgin are acting. I know some Virgin fanboys will try and attack my post but honestly why are Virgin IGNORING SD channels in favor of HD ones? Point above.

Wake me up when Virgin start catering to existing customers and there are millions of us who dont have a HD Box nor would we want to pay a premium to get some upscaled goodness(You cant honestly say that every HD channel has native HD shows, most are upscales).

In the interest of balance Sky are not currently launching any SD channels at all although of course they have more anyway, they have closed the SD EPG queue, they say it's because of hardware limitations.

Sky say's it may re-open the queue, we will see.

they willl reopen it either when they go hd exculsive ad upgrade all there cusoter box ot hd ones but blockign access ot hd channels unless the cusotmer plays or they dorp the hd charge or they will find some way to block the old boxes seeing the channels meaning if ht cusotmer wants them they will have to get a new box

There are lots of if's and but's there but as things stand now they are not launching SD channels, and will not be anytime soon.

Agreed there is no point to launching a new SD channels at all ever again on SKY. The answer I would like to know is when will VM promote HD variant channels up the EPG?

It also says that Sky 1 and Sky Atlantic will MOVE channel numbers. Sky 1 is already on channel 106 so that won't be moving anywhere and Sky Atlantic does not exist yet so not able to move anywhere.

Looks like the article is correct in what is planned at least. Seems odd that they changed the name of VMTV to Living TV Group then changed the name of Living to Sky Living. At least it looks like they have plans for the channel with the increased budget and higher EPG slot.

Interesting that Sky Atlantic is confirmed as having an SD version, I wonder if this means Sky are re-opening the SD channel launch queue.

Read the press release this DS article is taken from and see if you can see the phrase "exclusive to/on Sky" anywhere.

http://corporate.sky.com/media/press...ed_line_up.htm

and then see if you can see it on the original press release announcing the channel.

http://corporate.sky.com/media/press...y_atlantic.htm

Whilst I doubt we'll get it in HD, I can't see the reason why we won't get the SD version. Sky customers will be happy with the HD exclusive, advertisers will be satisfied with the same exposure they get with the rest of the Sky channels.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't trust a DS article to confirm today's date, never mind the future carriage details of a television channel.

There's nothing ambiguous in the press release - the HBO shows and Mad Men will only be broadcast in the UK on the new channel Sky Atlantic. But nowhere does the Sky press release say that Sky Atlantic will be exclusively on Sky's platform - that's Digital Spy suggesting that, not Sky. And Digital Spy is not the most reliable source.

Given that the channel isn't launching until 2011, there may not be a carriage announcement until nearer launch. Or it may launch as a Sky Exclusive for a month or two and then we get it. Or we may only get the SD version. Or nothing.

I'm not panicking about Mad Men season five yet as that won't arrive until summer 2011, possibly even later - in a NYT interview with creater Weiner last week he said it hasn't been renewed yet and he's not even started thinking about it.

I've just emailed Mr Berkett - will let you know if I get a response. I don't like going to alternative means for my TV but Mad Men is such an outstanding show I would make an exception for it.

Could it not just a a rebranding on Bravo as Sky Atlantic at the same time Living becomes Sky Living and the channel numbers change on Sky.

If there were the case would they need to do any negotiations as we already have Bravo

In the same way Hallmark 'closed' and Universal launched the other week

---------- Post added at 13:43 ---------- Previous post was at 13:41 ----------

Oh and what happened to the closing of some MTV owned channels to make way for BET and things... Did new channels appear or just the old ones disappear?

Not seen so much of the virgin insiders on this thread lately. I wonder if Virgin found out who they were and told them to stop.
I liked to read their contributions to the "coming soon" thread.

I think the Universal deal is brilliant. That replaces HBO. Lets concentrate on the positive. Sky is just anti competative. One day someone will sort them out.

Is the NBC/Universal content on VoD or a new channel? I guess a channel would give VM some negotiating power back but then they'd have to set up another subsidiary to run it.

Its for VOD! Press release can be found here:
http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/p...413&highlight=

Virgin Media today announced a deal with NBC Universal International Television Distribution for the video-on-demand rights in the UK to a broad selection of NBC Universal series. Under the terms of the agreement, these titles will be offered as new content across Virgin Media’s three entertainment platforms; TV, online and mobile. From the 1st December Virgin Media customers will be able to access past seasons of great shows such as House, Heroes, The Office (U.S.) and 30 Rock, whether in HD at home through its TV On Demand service or via its online and mobile ‘Virgin Media Player’ services.

We have had a burst of sales teams from BT (who were very polite and not pushy), Talk Talk (horrible) and Sky (actually I have a feeling they were not directy from Sky but I could be wrong, she talked rubbish though). When they promise you they can save you money ask them exactly how because try as I may unless they give me a particular deal for the duration of the contract, which none of them offered, I cannot see a comparable package for less, they didn't like it when they realised I was clued up on exactly what's on offer. Apart from BT they were quite rude when after a while I 'remembered' I am in a contract until next April! That's what you get for knocking on my door when I didn't ask, I will contact them if I want to like I did with VM.

Playing devils advocate in my experience the VM sales team are no better, I was fed a fair few porkies when I signed up but still glad I did, that's not to say I will stick around if there are better deals though.

I think eventually when the other BBC HD channels arrive the the BBC HD channel will no longer exist it will be morphed into BBC2 HD,BBC3 HD,BB4 HD..

then again it could turn into a sort of BBC SHOWCASE channel ,who knows another wait & see

Given the (current) bandwidth limitations of Freeview, the BBC may feel the need to keep BBC HD to show selected programmes from each of the HD variants of BBC One, Two, Three, Four, CBBC etc.

and then see if you can see it on the original press release announcing the channel.

http://corporate.sky.com/media/press...y_atlantic.htm

Whilst I doubt we'll get it in HD, I can't see the reason why we won't get the SD version. Sky customers will be happy with the HD exclusive, advertisers will be satisfied with the same exposure they get with the rest of the Sky channels.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't trust a DS article to confirm today's date, never mind the future carriage details of a television channel.

Yes, I think the confusion that people are experiencing is that the HBO content is exclusive to the Sky Atlantic channel but that does not mean that Sky Atlantic will be exclusive to the BSkyB platform in either SD, HD or even 3D.

I know I have raised this before so sorry for labouring the point but haven't VM already said that they can carry any of Sky's basic HD channels for an incremental wholesale fee? If that is the case why would they need a new carriage deal, don't they have one for 9 years?

the 9 year deal is for arts and sky one i believe they had a clause to get any new one hence why sky sports news hd keeps getitng said to come but i aint seent he contract so i cant be sure nither has my source they can only confirm that the basics which we have now and confirmed to launch in the future will be for 9 years

I would be very surprised if the contract didn't cover new channels, VM would be mad to only sign up for a 2010 portfolio of channels for 9 years and they clearly are not mad. I have a feeling it must come down to cost, while they don't charge extra for basic HD channels I can't see how they can just keep adding them and instead have to be a bit selective. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I have just been looking at the BARB figures for the week ending 17/10/10 http://www.barb.co.uk/report/weeklyTopProgrammes?_s=4
ITV2 HD highest viewing figure for that week was 13,000, the rest are are not great either 5,000 makes it in at number 10. I cannot see ITV wanting to keep it exclusive to Sky for to long with those figures!

I got an email this morning from Cindy Rose, Virgin's Executive Director of Digital Enterntainment:
Quote:

Regarding Sky Atlantic, we are in discussions with Sky regarding this channel now. We know little more about the channel and its programming than we have read in the press. It is entirely up to Sky as to whether they make the channel available to us and at what price. As always, we will do our very best to continue to offer our customers the best entertainment content available, but as I'm sure you'll appreciate, there are no guarantees. As soon as we have something to announce, rest assured we will.

We'll get it. Not in HD but we'll get it. SKY have poured a lot of money into this deal. They would be MAD not to try and claw it back through sale to Virgin. They know they can sell the SD version and get money.

Oh and i can't see it possible VM can do an OD deal with Universal and not get the HD channle versin somwhere down the line...

I agree: they may (or may not) hold back the HD version for a few months but will need the 3.75m Virgin viewers to sell this to advertisers, especially as they're not charging Sky customers any extra for the channel.
It's telling that the Sky announcement mentioned that the new channels "will be channels worth paying for and will give even more customers reasons to choose pay TV". Not "Sky TV" - "pay TV". Daroch believes the enemy to be Freeview/Freesat, not Virgin Media.
A shame that Digital Spy can't report on a press release accurately.
