I rang CSC this morning at 8am transferred to Technical Support, I gave them the MAC Address for the New modem, the TS lad could not get the system to rekanize the MAC Address, he transferred me to joe in the department above, joe said that the New modem should be working now! But it wasn't working and this was after rebooting the modem 3 times and rebooting the router 3 times as well, by this time it was 8:40am I sed to joe I would have to ring back later, watt I did at 10am rang CSC again transferred to TS I gave them the MAC Address again and with a reboot of the modem, router and PC I am back on line with neely 10Mb

Has anyone in area 21 had their upgrade yet ?

I spoke to Virgin CA and she said that I had already been upgraded and that I had been sent an email and I had to upload it myself. I checked my email and there is no email from Virgin. I apologise for my ignorance but how would I upload the speed via email if I do receive it later on ?

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

I dont think theyve sent anyone an email yet, just like they havent updated the roll-out page even though the upgrades started over a week ago. What you need to do register on their site and wait. If youre exTW you probably wont have to wait so long because it looks like all TW areas are being done first, unfortunately (for me at least:-))

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Hi,

I'm in area 31, I'm ex-NTL, and I registered for the free upgrade over a week ago. When I registered I got the message that I needed a new modem which would be sent to me within 5 working days.

Gave it 7 to be sure and today rang 0845 454 1111 to ask about my new modem. Chap I spoke to said that I wouldn't be getting a new modem because my old one can handle 10mb.

I've got an
Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem and in the "Operation Configuration" it says:

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2148000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 256000

Which is most definitely 2mb - does this get
remotely updated or is the guy talking out of his bum?

I then asked why, if my modem was cable of getting 10mb, was I only getting 2mb? He went on to explain that it was a phased rollout and that my area was due to receive the upgrade in June. When I pushed for something more definite he said mid-June (but he didn't sound too sure).

So, feeling a little peeved I said that since my speed hadn't been upgraded then could I have a refund, because my subscription had already gone up and that wasn't fair, and he replied that he would credit my account with £2 on my next bill. :D

Childish, I know, but it made me feel better!

Mind you, wouldn't surprise me if everything I've been told was wrong!

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Register page isn't working for me, and to be honest, not sure:

Do you register for speed upgrade first, and then it tells you that a change from STB to modem is needed, or do you sort that first with 150 ?

ermmm ..... yes I know its a price increase. I've only been with them one year. Actually now I remember, as soon as we signed on, the price went up for something - can't remember what it was now - but I was hell of annoyed at the time!!!

Its just that Virgin have got their timing completely wrong - free upgrade - price increase for same service!!!!!!!!!! Idiots!!!! 6 months after and I bet there would have been hardly any comments --- using the term hardly very lightly;)

Just got in and found my upgrade has been completed. I registered last week and live in ST3 which is Stoke-on-Trent.

Wed, 13 May 2009 11:15:44 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 883 ms = 1159.7 KB/sec, approx 9556 Kbps, 9.33 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 863 ms = 1186.6 KB/sec, approx 9778 Kbps, 9.55 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 851 ms = 1203.3 KB/sec, approx 9915 Kbps, 9.68 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 1731 ms = 1183.1 KB/sec, approx 9749 Kbps, 9.52 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9750 Kbps, 9.52 Mbps

Good News !!!!!!

Got my upgrade last night, confirmed when I logged into my VM account that now tells me I'm on 10Mb M.

Max speed I got though was only 5Mb but this could be due to one or two things...I'm still running an old 4100 as the new CM hasn't arrived yet, and I was doing the test over an 11g connection that can be a little iffy sometimes.

Anyway, not too concerned yet until I sort those 2 things out.

I tested my connection 4 times using 4 different speedtest.net servers, clearing my browser cache's between each test. First time, it said I was getting 20MB, then 54MB, then 51MB, then 25MB.. Uh ok.. Because I know for a fact that Im on the 10MB package.. Speedio gives me 9.48MB.. More like it.

Can Ben or anyone else for that matter confirm that, as well not involving a new 12 month contract, the free speed upgrade does not impact on any retentions deals still in force. I am on what was described at the time as a Lifetime deal currently giving a monthly discount of £19.46 on my services. I have no wish to jeopardise this but after my Son lost his discount 6 months ago despite being re-assured by VM he would not I am wary of doing anything that changes my services at all.

BTW I have never threatened to leave VM or plan to now, my deal simply came about when I rang VM to see if they had any offers on for existing customers. I couldn't believe my luck at what they offered but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth, do you?

Thanks.

I am in Middlesbrough the point is a lot of people think that Middlesbrough, Stockton on Tees and so on is Cleveland or Teeside it is Yorkshire.

Where are you?

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

I never mentioned the Boro. Dont know where you get the impression I did? I`m a bit further North.
Just to add - Teeside is a metropolitan area of which both Stockton and Middlesboro are part.

tdadyslexia 15-05-2009 04:03

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Stockton and Middlesbrough are NOT a part of Teeside, for one good reason Teesside doesn't egzist, Show me Teesside on a Ordnance Survey map, you can't because Teesside doesn't egzist.

I didn't say that you were from Middlesbrough, but I am guessing that you are from Redcar! If yes I believe that Redcar has bean upgraded to 10Mb

P.S.

If you are in Area reference: 30 it has bean upgraded to 10Mb

Look on your Bill for the Area that you are in!

"O" You may need a new Cable Modem from NTL

Good Look with your upgrade to 10Mb

HI Can one of you nice NTL\ Virgin chaps on the ground who seem as much
in the dark as we are try to get Management to update the Area upgrade page
with something like the Truth as to when areas will be done . Seems India has
a list but is that anywhere near correct .

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

tdadyslexia full area upgrades are not done based on the area code on your bill, they are not even done in full based on a particular hubsite on the network. Those who register for early upgrade appear to be upgraded as and when the codes are applied to their accounts, the all customer uplifts will happen as and when VM decide but certainly won't be done by entire franchise area at once so what's on your bill and which county you are in are a non-issue. Hubsites are usually all done at once but it depends on the size of the hubsite and how many CMTS are in it.

Hi Gulf4, I just got off the phone from VM, they tell me the whole GU area will be complete by 1st June - I do hope their right :) The UK call centre I spoke too, took the time to talk to the tech guys (I was on hold a while) to get the latest estimate.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Just had the most confusing of telephone calls with Customer Services (UK based). They said that nobody gets the 10Mb upgrade until October??? If you register now, you get updated in October I was told by an agent. If you don't register they won't upgrade you from 2Mb to 10Mb was the gist of her explanation. She then said I can change you to 10Mb now and it will work out 50p cheaper than what you are currently paying.
I mentioned this forum and that some of you guys had this 10Mb already-are you sure you did nothing?

The agent you spoke to is wrong - just look at the forums (avforums, digitalspy etc.) and you'll see there have been lots of folk already upgraded.

My understanding (and confirmed in call to VM this morning) is that if you register you will get the 2 to 10 upgrade as soon as your area has been upgraded. However, if you don't register, then everyone on 2Mb M package will automatically be upgraded in October.

If you were offered 10Mb now for 50p cheaper than your currently paying, then why not go for it! I can't take that option because I would lose part of the large 'loyalty discount' I currently have, which means it would cost me more to go to 10Mb L.

Hi Tony, Yes everyone (almost) can already get 10Mb if required (in theory). But to move all the 2Mb M customers onto 10Mb will cripple the network, that's why this upgrade is linked to the 50Mb upgrades that are currently underway - Then some of the 10Mb L & 20Mb customers can move onto (share) the DOCSIS 3 network, leaving room for the 10Mb M customers on the existing network. Hope that makes sense! Basically (according to experts in this forum) in areas that have had the 50Mb network upgrade there will be much more network capacity for the 2Mb M customers to be upgraded to 10Mb M. Hopefully soon for us...

Brian

I was told my upgrade had been applied yesterday after registering at the start of the week. It's gone from around the 1.8 / 1.9mb mark to a giddy 2.37mb. Whoosh! I have whiplash from my new supersonic speed.

My apologies for the misinformation I uploaded yesterday regarding when I would be upgraded to 10MB I foolishly believed Customer Care and all he said. The feedback today was that Upgrades will start in May and last till October and they have no idea what order the areas will be done in. This proves the adage to expect the worst from Virginmedia and you will never be disappointed.

Running like a Rolls-Royce here now. Peaking at 8.5MB, lowest 4.5M.B so far. Just need to keep an eye on my bill now...lol.
