Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Has anyone in area 21 had their upgrade yet ?
I spoke to Virgin CA and she said that I had already been upgraded and that I had been sent an email and I had to upload it myself. I checked my email and there is no email from Virgin. I apologise for my ignorance but how would I upload the speed via email if I do receive it later on ? |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I dont think theyve sent anyone an email yet, just like they havent updated the roll-out page even though the upgrades started over a week ago. What you need to do register on their site and wait. If youre exTW you probably wont have to wait so long because it looks like all TW areas are being done first, unfortunately (for me at least:-))

Anyone in Manchester been upgraded yet? I registered over a week ago for the upgrade, and the new modem still hasn't arrived.

I have, rebooted on Monday and it was there. Preregistered the other week - i'm in London and my email is NTL world so assuming ex NTL.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Hi,
I'm in area 31, I'm ex-NTL, and I registered for the free upgrade over a week ago. When I registered I got the message that I needed a new modem which would be sent to me within 5 working days. Gave it 7 to be sure and today rang 0845 454 1111 to ask about my new modem. Chap I spoke to said that I wouldn't be getting a new modem because my old one can handle 10mb. I've got an Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem and in the "Operation Configuration" it says: Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2148000 Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 256000 Which is most definitely 2mb - does this get remotely updated or is the guy talking out of his bum? I then asked why, if my modem was cable of getting 10mb, was I only getting 2mb? He went on to explain that it was a phased rollout and that my area was due to receive the upgrade in June. When I pushed for something more definite he said mid-June (but he didn't sound too sure). So, feeling a little peeved I said that since my speed hadn't been upgraded then could I have a refund, because my subscription had already gone up and that wasn't fair, and he replied that he would credit my account with £2 on my next bill. :D Childish, I know, but it made me feel better! Mind you, wouldn't surprise me if everything I've been told was wrong! |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Register page isn't working for me, and to be honest, not sure:
Do you register for speed upgrade first, and then it tells you that a change from STB to modem is needed, or do you sort that first with 150 ? |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
If you try and register with a STB connection it will just tell you to phone Customer Services

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
So I just have to wait for the modem fairy then. Just out of interest why do I need the new modem to get 10meg when I know my old one can handle it? How long did it take you to get the modem delivered to boro then?
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Because future network changes may cause your current modem to stop working. Its future proofing.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
No upgrade, nor even a hint of one, here in Warrington yet. P'raps we're last in the queue after our early 50Mbps service.
To rub it in further, we had our first £20 bill yesterday. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I think that's the problem ... paying that extra £2 for a free increase in speed - which hasn't happened ... but the increase has.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Hi Everyone,
I am thinking about registering for the 2-10mb upgrade, but I am worried that if I register I will be put onto a new 12 month contract. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Ben has already reassured me that that isn't the case. The post should be earlier on in this thread.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Fairy' I know you know that the £2 is not for the speed upgrade but just the first price increase in two years.
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
ermmm ..... yes I know its a price increase. I've only been with them one year. Actually now I remember, as soon as we signed on, the price went up for something - can't remember what it was now - but I was hell of annoyed at the time!!!
Its just that Virgin have got their timing completely wrong - free upgrade - price increase for same service!!!!!!!!!! Idiots!!!! 6 months after and I bet there would have been hardly any comments --- using the term hardly very lightly;) |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Luckily I got the upgrade a couple of days ago and the bill with £20 today:p:, so not as bad ;)
|
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
I did'nt realise you had to register to upgrade to 10mb. I don't recall reading this in the e-mailed letter from Richard!!
Just registered and was informed that it will be done in the next few days. Seems ridiculous to have to register for the upgrade. This hasn't been necessary in the past. |

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Got my upgrade last night, confirmed when I logged into my VM account that now tells me I'm on 10Mb M.
Max speed I got though was only 5Mb but this could be due to one or two things...I'm still running an old 4100 as the new CM hasn't arrived yet, and I was doing the test over an 11g connection that can be a little iffy sometimes. Anyway, not too concerned yet until I sort those 2 things out. |

I notice most people here are using speedtest.net, I personally don't find speedtest.net to be very accurate at all. I tested my connection 4 times using 4 different speedtest.net servers, clearing my browser cache's between each test. First time, it said I was getting 20MB, then 54MB, then 51MB, then 25MB.. Uh ok.. Because I know for a fact that Im on the 10MB package.. Speedio gives me 9.48MB.. More like it.

Still waiting in Stevenage (Ex-NTL) for the free upgrade to 10Mb. Registered interest on-line a few weeks ago. Not to fust as 2Mb was always fine and any large downloads I needed to do I would doing after 10pm and would always be ready for me in the morning. Now I feel I will have bragging rights over my brother and father who have ADSL connections and never get 8Mb. Cheers VM. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Just had a word with Virgin about non delivery of new Modem and it isnt coming
as i dont need one i already told them that ages ago Any way was told my Area GU14 Will be upgraded in June if that helps any other locals in the GU1 NTL area |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Hi gulf4uk, I'm very near to Farnborough on the Surrey side of border (GU16) - looks like we'll have to keep waiting a bit longer then. My area number is 26, is yours the same? I think Farnborough, Aldershot and Camberley areas are listed individually for upgrades, but likely to be completed around the same time.

Can Ben or anyone else for that matter confirm that, as well not involving a new 12 month contract, the free speed upgrade does not impact on any retentions deals still in force. I am on what was described at the time as a Lifetime deal currently giving a monthly discount of £19.46 on my services. I have no wish to jeopardise this but after my Son lost his discount 6 months ago despite being re-assured by VM he would not I am wary of doing anything that changes my services at all. BTW I have never threatened to leave VM or plan to now, my deal simply came about when I rang VM to see if they had any offers on for existing customers. I couldn't believe my luck at what they offered but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth, do you? Thanks. |

I never mentioned the Boro. Dont know where you get the impression I did? I`m a bit further North.
Just to add - Teeside is a metropolitan area of which both Stockton and Middlesboro are part. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Stockton and Middlesbrough are NOT a part of Teeside, for one good reason Teesside doesn't egzist, Show me Teesside on a Ordnance Survey map, you can't because Teesside doesn't egzist.
I didn't say that you were from Middlesbrough, but I am guessing that you are from Redcar! If yes I believe that Redcar has bean upgraded to 10Mb P.S. If you are in Area reference: 30 it has bean upgraded to 10Mb Look on your Bill for the Area that you are in! "O" You may need a new Cable Modem from NTL Good Look with your upgrade to 10Mb |

HI Can one of you nice NTL\ Virgin chaps on the ground who seem as much
in the dark as we are try to get Management to update the Area upgrade page with something like the Truth as to when areas will be done . Seems India has a list but is that anywhere near correct . |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
tdadyslexia full area upgrades are not done based on the area code on your bill, they are not even done in full based on a particular hubsite on the network. Those who register for early upgrade appear to be upgraded as and when the codes are applied to their accounts, the all customer uplifts will happen as and when VM decide but certainly won't be done by entire franchise area at once so what's on your bill and which county you are in are a non-issue. Hubsites are usually all done at once but it depends on the size of the hubsite and how many CMTS are in it.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Just had the most confusing of telephone calls with Customer Services (UK based). They said that nobody gets the 10Mb upgrade until October??? If you register now, you get updated in October I was told by an agent. If you don't register they won't upgrade you from 2Mb to 10Mb was the gist of her explanation. She then said I can change you to 10Mb now and it will work out 50p cheaper than what you are currently paying.
I mentioned this forum and that some of you guys had this 10Mb already-are you sure you did nothing? |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
Quote:
My understanding (and confirmed in call to VM this morning) is that if you register you will get the 2 to 10 upgrade as soon as your area has been upgraded. However, if you don't register, then everyone on 2Mb M package will automatically be upgraded in October. If you were offered 10Mb now for 50p cheaper than your currently paying, then why not go for it! I can't take that option because I would lose part of the large 'loyalty discount' I currently have, which means it would cost me more to go to 10Mb L. |
Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade
HI
Thats BLOTCH Now you can see from later replies the whole thing is confused as ever . What i dont understand is the area we are in has 10MG anyway my Son in Same building already has 10 has had for 2 years at least . so i assume the FREE Upgrade is a differant setup than the already in use 10mg there that confused even more . As far as am aware 90percent CAN already recieve 10mg thats what i was told its a money thing well isnt it always . No matter get there in the end Tony |

My apologies for the misinformation I uploaded yesterday regarding when I would be upgraded to 10MB I foolishly believed Customer Care and all he said. This proves the adage to expect the worst from Virginmedia and you will never be disappointed.
