I wish agents would stop making stuff up about HD.

Staff have yet to be briefed on Virgin's HD plans for this year.

All you missed was him adding that sky WILL NOT (his emphasis) wholesale their HD channels to VM, and they're hoping there will be some movement in the pay tv investigation in june/july.

which virign have said they cant get because sky will not give them it, there only maybe 6=8 channels outside of sky portfolio that ar ein hd and they will cost a bit and people aint goign to go to virign for a hd sub of say £10 when they ccan go to sky for 30 hd channels its simple business sense until virign can get access to sky hd channels they will not get access to other ones they need ot pay for the best hope it for itv and ch4 hd

Virgin Media added 44,500 net pay-TV additions in the quarter, down from 61,100 a year earlier. Virgin flagged up the rising usage of its VoD services. On a monthly basis, it said 1.8 million of its digital TV customers were now using VoD, representing a reach of 51.8%. Average views per user per month in the quarter were 29.7, compared to 22 a year ago.

Another let down on the HD front, that's the last straw for me, after eighteen years with VM-TV in its various guises I'll be cancelling in May when my contracts up and reluctantly going to Sky.
The fact nothing has been mentioned since Berketts boast of three or four HD channels in the next three months, made me realise VM would let us down yet again concerning HD.:td::td:

if we have living+1, Dave ja vu, challenge +1, ITV2 +1, then why isn't there a plus 1 for the 2 most popular channels - BBC & ITV1?

I know they both have BBC/ITV Player, but that is not all the programmes, and then not normally until the following day.

Yes, not good. If people want HD, Sky is the place to go and always will be.

Not only do Sky control all the premium HD stuff (films/sports) but they indirectly control most of the other HD channels too, ie History, National Geographic, FX etc.

Looks like positioning to me.

VM are rebranding their channels later in the year and have already launched Living 2+1, This latest launch gives them another slot on the Sky EPG and around Autumn (I think) VM will rebrand all their channels. So it might all be messy now with having Trouble and Living 2+1 next to each other, but it should all make sense later.

Probably rights issues. The main channels carry programming ie football, that the Beeb and ITV only have the rights to broadcast on their main channels only. It's the same reason why you don't see some programming on VOD.

That is genuinely hilarious. As Virgin are a train wreck in pretty much every other area at least they have a sense of humour when they add a new channel. Personally I'm holding out for Living +4 though. Watching psychic BS and other shovelware with an added 4, not just 2 hour delay will really add that extra magic.

1. Discovery RealTime Extra is to be rebrand Discovery Shed from March 20th.

2. When Living +2 launched next month no other Virgin owned channel will closed as an Channel called ''My Channel'' has sold their Sky EPG Channel number to Virgin.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009) in HD

My understanding was that most programming has been made in HD for several years. That being the case, I would expect that channels such as BBC, ITV etc. and Discovery, History, Nat. Geo. etc. would have huge libraries of HD content. Am I mistaken? Perhaps I'm thinking of widescreen rather than HD. :dunce:

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Its good to hear these rumors about HD, but like everyone else here I've heard it all before, especially the one on DS where Jane claims she spoke to a VM-CS person "who told her we'd be getting X, Y and Z HD channels".
Ten of us could ring up CS now and post back ten differing responses from, "there will be no new HD channels ever" to "I guarantee half a dozen new HD channels in the next few weeks".
I'd love to be proved wrong on this but past experience doesn't fill me with confidence.

The BBC makes very little in HD. You're thinking of widescreen, which they adopted long before digital SD TV became available.

US networks such as Discovery and Nat Geo have been making content in HD for a few years now.

All speculation - when you can talk about what is actually available, then I'll listen, as it stands, for current HD you can pay for a new freesat box to get one extra channel (ITV) over the BBC HD on the V+.

Freeview 'designing' new boxes is not providing a current service & will require existing customers to replace their current equipment.

You still haven't explained what you mean by Blu-ray 'in full'.

Hi Andrew

Where do you find special offer free to view channels on VM website, the only time I have found this kind of info is on Media Boys post 1 or a promotional offer through VM by post.

But at the moment I can watch Disney Cinemagic, so it must be a bug

Because if i am right there is a £5 monthly charge for Disney Cinemagic

If it is a promotional free to view period, they usually put a message on the channel when you switch onto it

Media boy doesnt get them all, and sometiems they do not advertise it ont here website or anywhere else, as ben said it will be displayed on the channel.

There also is a possiabitly someoen else added it to your package but i aint sure how it could be done though ben might have more ifnormation on that side of things.,

I phoned VM CS and they say it is a promotional offer for XL TV customers in certain areas, so I suppose anybody in the Luton area on XL TV enjoy Disney Cinemagic while it lasts.

It would have been nice for VM marketing department to let customers know though:(

PS there was no promotional message when switching onto this channel

CS knows very very little the majority of the time they tell you anytihng to get you to stay or sign up. Retentions are even worse. But i will pull down all CS and retentions staff as there is some honest ones out there and they do give truthful informaiton ie informaiton that is available on there intranet. But HD will probally be a big annoucement in the press.

Lets put it this way, I live on the main flight path to Heathrow Airport, and they are pretty low, so when l see a pink elephant flying past my house, that is when l believe that HD channels will come to VM, and l mean a lot of them, that is when l believe they will arrive.

I think you will have other tihngs to worry about then ;) but from teh response form some channel provides suggest virgin are actively trying to get hd channels and they will probally be here by 2010 with us seeing the first maybe by summer 09

Hi Andy, I don't know wether you know, but 2010 is seven months away, and there is still no gurrantee that we will get them, that is the reason why so many VM subs are going over to Sky, as VM cannot gurrantee the channels.

We have been hearing talk about this for months, but nothing is happening, VM don't even put out leaflets saying when this is likely to happen, l get leaflets offering deals, but nothing else.

BenMcr 08-03-2009 23:19

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

No they don't put leaflets out because Virgin don't sell the V+ on the basis of HD anymore

Also what would be the point of a leaflet saying 'we don't have much HD at the moment'

It would be the same as Sky going 'our broadband is likely to be very slow where you live'

Arthur i want a soruce that prove that because the lastest qauter results suggest a increase for virign for v+ users not a decline and most people want it for pvr not hd, but peple do want hd and it will be coming just not when the ceo said it would by end of 09 i say virign will have 2 or 3 hd channel ;) possibaly dnt count me on this if it doesnt happen about 10, by end of 2010 they should have about 8 with the possiable of 14. and if the ofcom review goe sin there favour the sky hd channels

Indeed.

Just to completely blow Arthur's point out the water, they showed churn was DOWN, from 1.4% in Q4 2007 to 1.2% in Q4 2008 and TV has a decent amount of net additions (44,500 in the quarter) and V+ subscriber numbers also continues to grow (52,800 more in Q4 alone) taking the total to 521,500.

Interestingly in the conference call they made a point to say that churn in V+ users (the very users you'd expect churn to be high in, if they were all leaving for sky HD) is the lowest of all groups.

I'm struggling to see where, other than on forums, there is a mass exodus of people from VM to Sky for HD?

Your average subscriber doesn't really care too much about HD. This is shown by the fact that of Sky's 9 million subscribers less than 600,000 of them have Sky HD. That's less than 6%. If less than 6% of Sky's subscribers care about HD, and many of them will have been people who picked their service because of the availability of HD, how many of VM's do you think do? And even if they do, how many will be willing to give up VOD for it? (Just for a comparison, nearly 52% of users access VOD)

The amount of noise on here about HD is because users on a forum are not your average subscriber, there is always going to be a disproportionate amount of people with issues with the service due to the nature of the forum.

Geez people, if we're going to play the numbers game at least get them right. Sky+ HD numbers are a lot higher than 600,000 as people very well know and this is the nth time people have quoted old figures (perhaps deliberately) to get their point across. 792 000 at last count.

I just quoted the figures from wikipedia as it's the easiest way to get them. If you have more up to date figures with a source go update the page so then I won't have to quote the low figures! I even rounded them up so was highballing the figures I had.

Even if they had 900,000 HD subscribers (they don't) that's still only 10% and the point still stands, more people care about VOD than HD.

Do the last quarter figures include the latest HD offer from Sky, though? I know of at least one person who has switched this quarter because of that.

Although technically I am still a TV customer as I have the free TV with the telephone, so probably won't be counted as leaving.

the latest figures from Sky are in this thread here based on their last results.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...on-thread.html

It's about 8.4% take up but the total number of V+ and Sky HD users is still only about 1.5 million plus however many are on freesat which shows that the take up isn't that great for HD at the moment

Freesat is growing fast - up to Christmas they sold about 200,000 units, with 50% of customers polled saying they bought it primarily for HD. That means you can safely conclude that there were at least 100,000 Freesat HD boxes in use by the end of 2008. There are in all likelihood more than that, as it's not going to be just those whose primary interest was HD that bought an HD box.

Not bad, considering the service only launced in May.

Why not? that is when freeview hd is meant to start taking off and freesat hd will probally take off why should virign over invest in something that still does not show in having a big support. dnt get me wrong i want hd but i take both sides the people wanting them and virign who have top pay for them. it isnt as simple as oh you say you want hd or lets get it virign have ot have prove form subscriber and they now have 500000-600000 subscribers about 15-20% of there subsriber which now says to them that hd is worthwhile you have to remeber virign ar e abusiness and unless they see figure to say it business sense they wont do it

I guess it depends on where Virgin believe the future of TV lies and where they as a company want to go... At present VM believe the future is in VOD - i think they are wrong! Most people imo still want the ability to tune in at the same time each week to watch their favourite programmes and increasingly more people want those programmes to be in HD.

Ignore the actual figures for a moment BUT the reason SKY are ever increasing their HD take up is because they have the channels to back it up.

Virgin can quote the use of VOD as much as they like BUT the REASON VOD is being used so much is simply because it's there.... it's not brain surgery - if there were more HD channels then more people would be buying V+ services and if they don't invest in HD then V+ figures won't rise - i've said it before, it's a vicious circle.
