Are we sure that this is going to be nagra 3 and not the start of the change over to iptv?

Btw a bloke who sells them around my end offered me one of his dodgy boxes for £30 today so it looks like they are running scared now haha

It'll be nagra 3 based, but they could do a whole world of stuff in combination with it as well. Even on an iptv system they'll still want to encrypt the channels.

They are definitely running scared, many of the sites that sell dodgy boxes have slashed their prices since this was announced, they know that as soon as it's rolled out they'll be left with a load of doorstops so are trying to shift them fast.

It's also going to start happening a lot sooner than some people on those 'other' forums think it is :D

This is the best news I have heard in ages! Bit like christmas coming early. Long overdue, Virgin should have been onto this much earlier and the problem wouldn't have got as widespread as it has. :)
Be interesting to see how it affects subscriber numbers next time Virgin release them

What justification do you have for that statement? The website is clear that you will receive a separate card for each box:

You are, of course, assuming the Virgin don't get it wrong somewhere..

Of course I am but I get fed up with people ALWAYS assuming that things won't go smoothly. Of course, time alone will tell.

Then we'll get the odd person on here saying they didn't get all their cards and everyone will think that the problem affects everyone........

I'm looking forward to all the cable stealers getting upset in their fora.

well at the end of the day most of them will say its been a good ride whilst it lasted and maybe it time for them to dig deep in their pockets and use the money they have saved over the years from free tv. However I know most ppl will install a motorised satelite to gain free tv. There are so many ways, one avenue gets closed another one opens. The hack has been around for decades its about time something changes.

Hey Gang,

Just to inform you, if you go to Help and Info on the Home menu and select 'Virgin TV - Updated Oct 09' they have added a 'Your new TV smart card' option with all the information about it. Also, If you go on 'Help Videos' in the help and info menu, they have added the smartcard replacement tutorial video.

Ben :)

Just wondering - are the new SmartCards being sent out by Royal Mail - and if so, are there any alternative plans in place to use another distribution service?

TheDon 19-10-2009 21:17

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

There's not really a need for there to be.
The cards aren't time sensitive, if they get delayed by a few days it's really no big issue, the timescale for the switchover is not going to be anywhere near tight enough that a delay in delivery will cause any problem.

Nice and hopefully this will stop those sodding kids near I live from going into the grates and messing around with VM's wires

Also does anyone know if the company has put anything in place to stop their own staff from leaking technical information that maybe used to compromise the encryption?

Any word on if they will be attacking those with dodgy modems next?

Hey i have just been over to the DARK SIDE ( the faulty forum pages ) , but not to see not to see how to do things and it seems that they are running scared as on one of the threads they have lost their tv in LEEDS,BRADFORD,WAKEFEILD AND BARNSLEY so it seems thet it seems to have them sh****ng themselves.

But on another note has anybody else noticed on the v box in the tech section that every couple of days there is a number that is climbing up it started at 8886 and now is at 8890 can anybody shed any light on this ?

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

i don't want to spoil anyone fun but it's been confirmed that n3 has been hacked the card has been dumped , the hack will not be released until n3 is rolled out nationally.

Dumping is the process of extracting the data contents of a card. all areas of the card including ROM (actual card program) and EEprom (data incl keys etc) has all been decrypted it's a matter of time they will all be back up and running and as for vm what waste in spending all that money in sending out new cards.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

How come it was not done in Canada then?

I would not be surprised if that is the case though. There is nothing like someone saying you cant hack this to bring out the coders to try it

What about the systems that do not use cards?

What about the systems that do not use cards?

it's a hacker from england who has managed to reverse engineer a vm smartcard. Thats all I can say.

he has managed to peel away the 3 extra layers of silicone security chips using a powerful electron microscope and several different acids and lasers until he got to the final precious bottom 3 layers of the Kudelski chip where all the precious codes are hidden

The bottom 3 layers of the Kudelski chip is where all the precious codes are hidden not anymore.

At the end of the day the only reason why N1 was hacked was because NDS (SKY) hired a hacker to hack nagra 1 NDS was working on this for 6 weeks so they hired a hacker who managed to do it 1 week for a 6 figure sum. nagra are trying to hack into a nds card and vice versa thats how the business goes.

Wouldn't the story about n3 being hacked just be the type of titbit that the suppiers of the boxes would spread to try to get rid of all their stock before the true position became common knowledge?

After all who would want to be left with a load of doorstops when there are still gullible punters about who will believe unsubstantiated rumours.

£50!! That's just stupid..this is an illegal industry worth millions and anyone getting their hands on a hacked card surely is prepared to pay more than that surely?:)

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

thing is I would imagine once it is hacked and up and running the cards will be cheap . Its the boxs where they make the money. 2 VM engineers earlier this year installed 2 v boxes both modified and hacked cards for £300. Not to me btw a guy up the street I have always paid my cable bills

I have the knowledge to say the bit he copy pasted is a repost of a post that did the rounds 12 months ago about how n3 was extremely close to being hacked and it was literally days away, one that was pretty soon called out as a hoax.

If n3 is close to being hacked or not I don't know, but if it is, it will have nothing to do with that, and someone coming on here giving a textbook explanation of how smartcards are hacked isn't enough to worry me that it is any closer than it ever has been. Anyone that has the slightest knowledge of smartcard hacking can tell you what it involves doing to physically extract the data.

Good point zing. I pay my tv license and internet bills so I'm not to bothered if it's hacked or not.

BTW 'Thedon' the concept is exactly the same i'm just feeding you information. Matter of interest is VM owned by your old man? why are ppl so worried if it's hacked. it's not that vm cares about you they just want our money. I pay £35 pm for **** i wished i never took out. Of course the concept is exactly the same as the concept is the same for hacking ANY smartcard, so you get zero points.

My point is that what you've wrote gives no more reason to think it's hacked than the last time forums were spammed with "n3 is close to being hacked!!!!!", and infact gives less reason, because you're just repeating the same things that were said back then.

Feel free to surprise me with something new though, I'm all ears if you can actually do anything but blow hot air around with zero substance.

So would virgin have thought ahead about the whole hacking situation? Will they have an alternative plan and will iptv stop the whole free tv thing?

IPTV will stop it, but if it did why are they spending money on n3 and dishing out new cards thats what i don't get.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Where has anyone said it is exactly the same encryption as in Europe or anywhere else? It may come from the same company but that doesn't mean it's 100% identical.

I'm not aware of any other cable company running 'N3' and the Cisco IPTV platform together (if someone knows different please provide a link). So who knows what the interaction between the two will be.

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

I've been up all night working on this and I think I've figured a workaround / crack for this N3 malarkay.

Here's a sample of the code I've come up with:

Payment of Direct Debit was successful
ATR String: 3F FF 95 00 FF 91 81 71 FE 47 00 44 4E 41 53 50
31 34 32 20 52 65 76 47 30 31 15
ROM Revision: 180
EEPROM Revision: Mer000
Acquisition of TV services was successful

I'm pretty sure it'll work - anyone fancy beta testing it?

Will that work on a card that has not been issued anywhere in the UK yet ?

If it does do you do multiples of 10 in a discrete box via dodgy Dave in the pub.

Matter of interest is VM owned by your old man? why are ppl so worried if it's hacked. it's not that vm cares about you they just want our money. I pay £35 pm for **** i wished i never took out. You have a problem with your bb you phone vm and your put through to some numpty over the ocean.

TheDon i'll give you 4/10 for research.

Well you maybe getting a crap service but I'm not so yes I needn't worry...yet.What happens if that service deteriorates to the point that it is effected?

Also why should I pay full price for that service then..My distaste is for the cheaters and thieves among us who always say that it's theft against the corporation or big business and not the customer.Well thats specious because who pays extra every time the bills go up to cover all the extra security that has to be paid for whether it our DTV or using a retailer in the high street? They may just rely on insurance against loss but they pass that onto us the customer.

No. Our expert engineers will have fitted your new Smart Card.
According to the FAQ they have already been sending the cards out.

I have just been looking at website and wondered if this is what they could all be on about as if you look at one of their partners it is CISCO . It also shows epg andit says that it is fully customable by the company , so could this be what the new cards are for ?

Long term Virgin will win.

But this is all new so it will have to be tested - that won't be done quickly.

All Set Top Boxes and modems should have something similar to this fitted and when they are removed from the inventory a signal should be sent rendering them useless.

They seem to for newer boxes, but it should be all to help prevent theft of services.

My SA V+ box is now working as a free view box seeing as they abandoned it here ( ok I get 1 2 bbc3 bbc4 itv 4 5 citv and a couple of other channels) they left it connected so I aint even done that I just opened the case and disconnected the HDD so it does not make a noise. If I run into a need for an IDE HDD ill just rip it out and use it :) TA VM lol

pgchimp 28-10-2009 18:22

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Today it finally happened, VM collected my Two V+ STB's

The service was cancelled in February and the boxes have been on top of the wardrobe since then.

The agent collecting the boxes said he had only received the authorisation within the last week to pick up the boxes.

Its no wonder these boxes are pirated if VM are prepared to leave them with a customer for 9 months

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

This cracks me up. I would never use a dodgy box or modem but can't Virgin see what is going to happen?

People who have dodgy boxes pay for Virgin internet just to get the wire, then they stick with it because it is a good price.

Once their boxes are useless they will have to pay for TV, show me a single person that would pay for Virgin's substandard TV service over SKY.....oh and SKY give you free broadband too.

In conclusion this upgrade is going to cost Virgin money to implement and lose them money in the long-term.

What they should really do is make the TV as good as Sky, up the price but undercut SKY and throw in free broadband. Can I have a job?

I have VMTV by choice. Infinitely superior for my needs than Sky. V+ and On demand are important to me. I can understand if HD TV is important to individuals that they would prefer Sky but other than that......

VM won't lose revenue through dealing with the service thieves.

What about the comical TV guide Virgin offer?

---------- Post added at 14:54 ---------- Previous post was at 14:52 ----------

I think the bottom line is the price is just a rip off. Everyone I know with a dodgy box pay for standard Sky and just use the dodgy box for the football, which they will just watch online in poorer quality once their box is useless, using Sky broadband that is!

---------- Post added at 14:55 ---------- Previous post was at 14:54 ----------

It is like cinema piracy these people will never ever pay for the service anyway.

If you are referring to the epg then I haven't experienced Sky's new HD one, but the VM epg in my experience is far better than Sky. I much prefer a mini screen of the channel you are on than the crap background music you get with the Sky epg.

So, you are arguing that because SOME people MIGHT not pay for Virgin, Virgin should, what, allow them to carry on stealing?

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

The new sky epg has a mini tv too. As for if it's better than the v+ one, well I don't think there's all that much in it to be honest.

I find the v+ easier to use purely because of hte colours, but I also find it slower than the sky one.

MMMmmm. I guess it boils down to choice.

shame they are not really much cheaper than sky then. Both firms are stupidly priced, for everything you might want it is almost £60 a month, no bloody wonder cable thieves are out there.

Not sure what the price has to do with it - if you can't afford it or don't want it don't pay for it and don'e use it. You don't have to steal it.

wilsonreece 03-11-2009 15:19

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

I agree but if they were just a bit more reasonably priced ,they would win so many more customers. They are both as bad, I called sky to ask why my subscrition went up £1 in Sept and was told due to operating costs.........if their costs have gone up £9.5m a month someone is doing something wrong.

BenMcr 03-11-2009 15:30

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

Why are they? £9.5m isn't that much when you consider the size of Sky

wilsonreece 03-11-2009 15:39

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?

£9.5m a month increase, on top of the £9.5m a month annual increase over the last 7 years. I can't believe anyone can defend the cost of Sky TV. £10 a month extra for a few channels in better quaility that YOU have to buy an expensive TV for too.
