Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Some of you are bound to have heard about the incident this weekend in which a Southwest airlines (Flight 812) had a rapid de-pressurisation of the cabin after a part of the ceiling flew off and left a hole in the cabin fuselage.
This got me thinking about the stress these airlines put on their planes on a daily bassis. Often these low cost carriers are making several trips per day, each time putting stress on the planes fueselage. With some UK airlines still running 737 300 and 500 series aircraft put into service in the 90's, we are ending up with planes that are now over 20 years old. With frequent flights on a daily bassis how long before these planes are so used that something goes wrong. Its time that some companies update their aircraft. |

Saw a Typhoon over Loch Lomond this afternoon - came south, executed a tight turn to starboard whilst losing altitude and then tore off northwards again.
I've never seen a Typhoon here before. We get the occasional Herc and a few Tornados but they always seem to be on the way somewhere else. I got the impression this one was limbering up for a trip to Libya ... |

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Yeah most of these were taken from the aviation park. (Free to get in if you dont park your car).
I was using my 70-300mm and it was just right. When they are on the nearest taxi way to the aero park you have only a few moments before you cant fit the plane into the pic with 70mm. However for when they are positioned on the runway and takeoff, or getting the shots as they come off the apron then the 70-300 is perfect. |
Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Tu-154-B2 first flight after being stored for 10 years. Shortly after takeoff control system went nuts, and plane almost lost control. Pilots managed to land the bird in one piece.
Rumor is aileron feedback problem - system treated any aileron motion as external force, and attempted to "correct". Rudder was the only fully functional control. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e08_1304250443 |

I saw these and thought of you lot. :D
We visited Almond Valley Heritage Park in Livingston yesterday. Turns out it is right beneath the point where aircraft approaching Edinburgh from the southwest make their final turn onto alignment with the runway and drop their gear. I caught this one in the very act: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/at...1&d=1304443272 EI-CVB is an Airbus A320-214 ... clearly currently flying for Aer Lingus. Meanwhile, this pilot flying for Easyjet is playing it casual and hasn't dropped gear yet: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/at...1&d=1304443532 This is an Airbus A319-111. Got a couple of other blurry ones but these are the best by far. Almond Valley is at EH54 7AR ... I guess those that know about these things would be able to work out the distance to the runway and presumably the altitude of the aircraft at the time these were taken. Enjoy. :D |

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
This might be created as a one off or for promotional events but it will never make it to commercial paseenger airliners.

Solar Impulse flew for twenty minutes at the Paris Air show on June 26th.
It is capable of solar powered flight night or day. The Solar Impulse is powered by 10000 solar cells, which cover its 207-foot wingspan, and generates about 40 horsepower. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=8c1_1309175010 |

Lots of aircraft movement over the last few days over the village..
A few days ago Duxfords Sally B (B17) went out and then came back just north of the village. Yesterday three tiger moths went from ENE to WSW in formation (they go so slow it looked like they'd drop out of the sky. Another two plane formation followed the same path today (didn't see what they were but both same type low wing mono-planes (one reddish the other white) and not flying east towards duxford a low flying WW2 radial aircraft (from the jointed wings and grey underbelly I'd say it was one of their corsairs though it didn't pop up on MODE-S) |
