A bit of snow here this morning and some frost but overall not too bad. We drove up to Blackpool where it was bloody freezing and after a foot march up and down the prom :erm: I'm hopeful my fingers and toes will last the night and not turn black and drop off

Just dropped Paul off to work - I went via the A13 and M25 instead of the little country lanes which stay icy for ever! Just a light dusting of snow round here (Essex/London) but it's frozen over so not very nice to drive on the side roads - the major ones are ok.

Mrs Gaz has just got back from a short foray & reports that while we have had about an inch or two near the coast, further inland there is quite a bit more - and more falling. I'm quite glad not to have to go to work, this week ;)

- loads of food & water out for the birds, in fact they are so stuffed with fat & seeds it is a wonder they can fly ;)

We are driving back up the motorway back to England on Sunday and I just know we will be held up in the snow.
I love the snow, but when you want to get anywhere by car, it can be a real pain. Here's hoping there w'ont be too much.

Re: [Merged] Snow !

Britain under attack from mysterious white substance

Quote:

Britain came under sustained attack today from a mysterious white substance known as "snow". Rooftops, pavements, grassed areas and other surfaces have all been covered in the affected areas, with human-shaped mounds forming in some places.

Witnesses described the substance "raining down from the heavens". "It was frightening, I've never seen anything like it before," said one. "I thought it would never end but it just kept coming."

The origins of the attack are unclear and it is not yet known how many casualties it has caused. A DeadBrain journalist was monitoring known extremist websites, including Fox News, for claims of responsibility, but was arrested under the Terrorism Act and imprisoned for 28 days.

COBRA, the Cabinet's emergency response committee, has met several times during the course of the day. Defence Secretary Dr John Reid appealed for calm from his underground bunker. "Right now we don't know what this is or what has caused it, but we're doing everything we can to stop it, which isn't a lot," he said.

"People should stay indoors and tape their doors and windows shut. They certainly should not touch this substance if they see it, and it is advisable to boil your water if you live in an affected area."

A spokesman for the Home Office listed the areas affected as being London and the South East, eastern England and northern England †“ "so basically all the important bits and eastern and northern England".
:D

Everything was fine down here until late this afternoon when I got out of the Gym to find that it had snowed.

It wasn't too bad on the main roads, but when I got to the side roads I decided that I wasn't going to chance cycling on it!

wise move - I remember one year the snow was of a consistency that immediately packed down to a sheet of ice when a car went over it, (remember when you used to make a 'slide' ) - one side road was so slippy that the camber was enough to take the wheels from under me.:dozey:

It was just starting when I escaped Glasgow after work last night. Driving over Queens View was fun, heavy snow in headlights is a bit dazzling :spin:

Went back down to Drymen for a curry later in the evening and nearly couldn't get back home - there was smoke coming from the clutch by the time I got to the top of the steep hill coming back out of Balmaha. :erm:

Now I'm snowed in, but seeing as I wasn't going to work anyway I just feel cheated. :disturbd: :D

Woke up this morning to see everything covered with a white carpet at least 3" deep. So we quickly packed up and set off for Woodhead Pass. Unfortunately, there was very little snow so we gave up and went back to Magic Mountain in Glossop (excellent shop) for some retail therapy. The staff sugested that Snake Pass might be better - and it certainly was. This is Mrs A. setting off north along the Pennine Way. We made it as far as Hern Stones for quick bite to eat and then slithered back down to the road. Great fun and much better than shopping!

Woke up and made a mug of my strange tasting Indian tea. Put fire on. Went upstairs and opened up the BBC News website. Apparently it's snowing. Is it? Thought it was cold this morning - had to find my slippers. Went to window and would you believe it - it's snowing :D Settling a little too. Going to be hell at work tomorrow if it keeps up though :(

I am in Glasgow also. WAs out in the town last night and decided to come home at 1am as the snow was starting to get heavy. Ended up a good idea as the bus struggled to get up the hill, I also thought that it would be murder to try and get a taxi after all the clubs closed.

I even saw some people get out of their taxi and push it along!

It only stopped at around 11am so that was nearly 10 hours it snowed for.

Here comes the snow

The view from our front bedroom, an hour or so ago:

It's a quick Photoshop stitch up and the contrast between snow and sky was very difficult to manage, but you get the idea. OK, so the snow line is at about 400 metres (the top of that hill is about 650m) but hey, winter's not far off after all.

The bizarre thing is, thanks to that global warming thingy, our mild autumn has seen to it that all the shrubs and most of the trees (all except the silver birches, which you can see looking naked and a bit purple in the middle distance) are only just dropping their leaves.

Snow and leaves in the same shot! And I've just put more coal on the fire. :erm:

Just more trees actually ... and the neighbour's driveway. :p: Camp Cable ... that's an idea though. Anyone fancy the next CF meet at Loch Lomond with songs round a campfire? :D

I hate camping - (last time I camped was when working at the Leeds festival- I left my tent there as I ran away from the riots a few years ago!), but that does look sooooo beautiful up there Chris!.. :rudo: are there any wild animals around though?

That's not camping. Camping is going to a quiet piece of woodland and camping there without any facilities that camp sites have. Me and a friend have been camping in woodland in various months including October and Februrary, which can make it a challenge but the nice warm fire and the beer help!

Lots ... we had a deer who spent a few weeks in and around the back garden earlier this year, a sparrowhawk who likes to hang around the bird table, the occasional fox and lots of slow-worms under the lawn (and occasionally above it, I found this one basking in the heatwave in August:

don't think I'd like to get close enough to examine whether it has eyelids!? :erm: eek.

I'd be such a bad wiccan / Buddhist /etc. - I really really hate spiders... they have to go! anything else I can just about put up with though, I think. Still, I'd probably be admiring the scenery where Chris lives so much I wouldn't notice all the creepy crawlies. I'm so jealous.

reminds me that I once saw some large shape moving in some bushes, and exclaimed out-loud 'what on earth is that' and my mate drolley replied 'it's a cow...' (it gets worse - I once said in Bristol near the Louisianna - ooh look, the water moves!)

Unique to Scotland are giant worms. Fortunately, the Haggis population keeps them under control.

Nothing here at the moment and I doubt it for a while, quite warm for this time of the year.
