I still have my trusty Pace 2000 until next Wednesday (Ntl did offer any date next week ) when I am having it swapped out.
I even fired up my ultra reliable Zen dial up account for a few minutes just so that I could appreciate my 750k speed.

yup... i'm afraid you speed can only change once in a month (although this is a way of getting round this, 99.9% of c/s agents will not able to do this, so you'll have to wait until next month i'm afraid

Hi all,

Just wanted to say phoned NTL earlier,to pay the bill Boo!!
and while i was paying i thought i'd ask about the upgrades..

I receive TV and BB through the Samsung STB. (no probs to report with this box much better than the pace ones imho) and i was under the impression from this site and others, that the STB upgrades were going to be automatic.

so anyway paid said bill and asked about the upgrade and was told it will be an automatic upgrade, but as i was on the line he would do it then for me.
also told me after i would have to re-register through the ntl start page again, for the changes to take effect. Therefore the re-registering is to basically say you agree to the new caps and conditions etc.

Now the one question i have for you people is does this mean a whole new 12 month contract? or just what i was told? to confirm i/we accept the new caps and conditions.

It all went really smoothly (Honest) so koudos to NTL and the v helpful person who dealt with me,and this was the only thing i wasn't sure of.

Oh and im in Stockport SK8 if that helps any of you STB's to get upgraded with a phone call.. Gl all

many thanx

speed upgrade not working?

yesterday i went to the webpage to upgrade my modem to 2mbps. I entered my username and password. all seemed fine. shortly after, i reset my modem (surfboard 4100) and checked it to see if there was any difference. nothing new. no superast speed upgrade. so i checked the cablemodem logs:

Retrieved TFTP Config mota4100-silver.cm SUCCESS

ok. it may take a few hours to kick in, i guessed.
it is now 27 hours later, and no matter how many times i reboot the modem, it still picks up the silver config file. chatting to my mate, he said the new 2mb config filename is something like mota-mid.cm and his worked fine.

just chatting to another mate, and he is having the same problem as me. he is using a surfboard 3100 (same as my other mate who successfully upgraded). he is also picking up the silver config file.

anyone got any suggestions on what to do? (other than phone the helpdesk, which i'll do when i get home from work tomorrow if i get time)

cheers,

wanye.

You could try visiting http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/ and selecting the speed test link.

This should confirm whether you really have a 2Mb link or 750K. My 2Mb upgrade now reads "
approx 2054 kbits/sec"

sorry. forgot to mention that i had already tried several speed tests, and that im definitely still on the 750k service.

It's nothing at all to do with the contract etc, it's just because the stb has received a new signal that you have to re-register the pc onto the network.

if you havent had to do it, its likely you arent on the new service yet. You'll probably need to reboot the PC and STB before you can get the reg page up.

The new speeds also herald the change of the names of the tiers, which as a result has required new billing codes to be added rather than the speed for each connection attributed to the original billing codes being increased.

As a result it means you will have had to have had the billing codes changed and as a result will need to reregister.

spazhammer 10-03-2005 21:09

Re: speed upgrade not working?

ok. after phoning them, spending 18 minutes on a call from my mobile, 95% of which was on hold music, i get told there seems to be a problem with my line/modem/whatever, and they will look into it/sorry/try again in the morning.

5 minutes later, i reboot the modem just one last time for good measure before i give up and go watch shameless, i am now the proud owner of TFTP Config cmreg-mota4100-mid.cm.

success!

i'm currently averaging ~216k/sec from my works ftp server.

nice :)

I upgraded to 3Mb yesterday on a Samsung STB and although the very helpful CS man said I'd have to re-register, I didn't. I've checked the speed and it's definitely been upgraded.

I didn't have to re-register either. I'm definitely on the new tier (stb-high).

Mind you, I didn't reboot my router or anything. Just the STB.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I'm slightly confused about a number of things about this upgrade. I currently have two STB's (both of which are Pace's, albiet different models). Does anyone know when it will be upgraded automatically (will they know to only upgrade to 1mb as I have a pace?).

If I do ask them to upgrade my STB, will they do both of them? as I've heard the new (Samsung?) ones are better. My current ones are v slow at changing channels which I'd quite like fixed if I have the opportunity.

Does anyone know what is involved with the swap out? Can you just give the engineer the old ones at the door, or does he need to come in and do a full proper setup (i.e. how long are we talking about).

Also I was originally told that I could not have a CM as I was in a STB area and using a CM and a STB (to watch TV) wasn't possible because they would conflict with eachother, however in error NTL sent me one. However some posts in this thread seem to go against this. Is it now possible to use a CM if you have STB's?

If so how easy do you think it's going to be to get NTL swap my internet access from comming from my STB to my CM?

Checky 10-03-2005 21:40

Re: speed upgrade not working?

on the whole topic of this... do ya have to use the link or ring em up for the upgrades, at the moment i am on the pace box, not had the upgrade and cant do online says not set up yet when clicking the stb piccy... the problem i have is.. i couldnt do it online, as well.. i first set up broadband that long ago i have no idea of the ntl addy i was set up, and the password even less idea.. lol

the problem with phoning is, that the whole ntl setup is not in my name, and i have no official access to any of the account, but do know the password and all the details that are to do with the account... messed up i know.. but the account holder, only stays here once a month, and well.. knows less about computers than dancing zebras do

i know ima have to ring em to get them to replace the stb, but i would be quite happy with just the extra 250kbs til i can write a script out for the account holder to read from.. as he would end up getting annoyed as most people find it hard to understand him, very thick glaswegian accent.. and a short temper

any suggestions? or info on when the stb would get the new cm file automatically?

Checky

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

:welcome: all new people

@ Woods -

They'll only replace the Pace STB you use for broadband with a Samsung. I think they'd only replace the other non-BB Pace with a Samsung if you have a lot of problems. As for the auto-upgrade to 1mb, prior to a box-swap...dunno. Some people seem to have had to phone up, others have had it automatically.

It is possible to use a standalone cable modem (SACM) in STB broadband areas.

Phone up ntl & ask :)

@ Checky -

You'll have to phone them. I don't think STB broadband users can use the online upgrade for this. And you need to phone them anyway to get a Samsung to replace the Pace.

Thanks Matt D.

Also any anyone confim that they're arn't any new T&C's or anything attached to any of these new deals? I.e. by agreeing to get a new STB or the new speed your not expecially agreeing to a min 12-month contract, or new download cap limits?

Basically what I mean I guess is; are NTL trying to screw us over by dangling candy infront of us?

No new 12 month contract.

Download limits.... The 2meg & 3meg services have the same "limits" (guidelines) as before - 1GB per day download.

The new 1meg service (previously 300k) has a 3GB per month limit.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I live in Cambridge and the automatic upgrade (http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/e...tierMigration/) worked for me straight away, upgrading from 750 kbs to 2 Mbs. I didn't notice any loss of service while the modem rebooted, and a speed check at http://speedtest.tds.net/speedtest/ confirmed the upgrade had taken place. A really nice service!

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I live in the Ipswich area; I phoned NTL and they tell me I have to wait for a letter through the post but I read on here people are phoning up and getting upgraded?

I tried to use the upgrade links on ntlworld.com but it gives me the error "An error has occured whilst trying to retrieve your mailbox details. ( WrongSecurity in page validate). If you need further help, please contact our customer support (0800 052 2000). "

Any help/ideas?

I live in the Stockport area and called up to upgrade my 300k connection to 1MB. They said I would need a new STB to be able to do this - is this right as I can't see any reference to a new box for that speed anywhere?

You're on Rochdale UBR, aren't you, if memory isn't playing tricks?

Anyway, AFAIK I'm not doing anything with this round of upgrades, because they're being done in the billing/provisioning system rather than just be amending the CM files. Ask Debsy nicely - plenty of STB folk are on the new tiers, according to my monitoring.

Incorrect info being given I'm afraid from previous info posted on here by 'associates' the Pace boxes can handle 1M easily, let them send you a new "sammy" anyway supposed to be a lot better on the TV side (tho I had no trouble with our old pace2000)

BBKing 11-03-2005 07:46

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

They'll do 1.5Mb fine as well, the problem isn't that they won't take the speed, it's that they won't do it reliably = unhappy customers = fault calls. Many people would have no problem even at 3Mb, BTW.

Anyway, *officially* 1MB is the max limit, which is why 750k Pace STB users get 1Mb pending a box swap. The new 1Mb/100k tier is likewise no problem.

I live in the teesside area and was told on the phone to wait for a letter. I tried the manual upgrade but got this message:
Error looking up cable modem details for <ADMIN EDIT - not a good idea to post your mac addy> (no SMS details).

Any ideas? Anyone able to manually upgrade me?

Thanks,
Paul

you have 2 options

1) wait for the automatic upgrades
2) contact customer services again and see if they are willing

or

maybe there is someone on here who can do something, but i really would edit that mac address out ;)

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I was hoping after the disaster of NTL disconnecting my service for almost 48 hours in SO22 region that I would now be on 1MB via my Pace STB, but alas bandwidth testing show I still got 750K.

Having said that, I can live with 750K, just as long as they keep the damned line up. Service is probably more important to most people than pure speed.

CS are swamped and I got fed up waiting on hold, so will have to try again later :(

probably that your internet billing account (SMS) is not linked to your cable modem account (SABS) correctly

to check for definate you would need to check with customer services

I'm afraid I don't - but I'm sure someone else will come along shortly who does, we have a few people who work for ntl who help out here in their spare time. If they can help I'm sure they will :)

Amazing how you can get different responses on different days: I rang them again this morning and they said they didn't know what the SMS problem was but that they would upgrade me there and then. I was told reboot the computer (not the modem interestingly) and it would be at the new speed - and it is! Wahoo.

Really glad to see things are moving for many people. Any NTL'er here know if the upgrade actually happened in SO22 (Winchester and surrounding area) or not. CS guy couldn't tell me, but thought not because of the network outage.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I've been abroad and so today was my first chance to check if I had been upgraded.

I'm a 750k'er with a Pace STB and I thought that I would be automatically upgraded to 1Mb.

I checked this morning, rebooted my STB and I'm still on 750k.

I called CS and said could I get a Samsung STB so I could get 2Mb. The lady said she'd add my name to the list and someone would call me next week.

I then asked about getting 1Mb whilst I was waiting for a Samsung box and she said she would have to downgrade my account for me to get 1Mb so I said I'd leave well alone for now.

Is this correct?

I wouldn't worry too much about uploading at the moment. At the moment you're allowance if you like is just the same.

Not sure about counterstrike - but you can have a look at this

Yes, it is. 1meg was effectively 300k, which means you'd be changing tier, and then wouldn't be able to change back to your old tier (750-2meg) for 30 days. :)
