I have never heard anyone say Amazon has a reputation for low prices.

This is the same Amazon that put the cost of Prime up from £49 to £79 in 2014, forcing you to have the streaming, whether you wanted it or not.

But that was a change in the nature of the service they were offering.

I thought most people regarded Amazon Prime prices as being rather lower than elsewhere. I've heard it all now!

Seriously, Den. Politics? I'm not the one who raised issues such 'they are getting too big' and 'how they treat their staff', which are irrelevant to this argument.

If it is not understood that competition leads to lower prices, maybe some tuition on economics is required. There have not been enough players for the Premiership Football rights to demonstrate this to date, but as more competition comes in, things can start to change. I've already outlined how Amazon (as an example) could bid more yet lower prices, and to say that higher prices will follow 'end of' does rather indicate that you have a closed mind on this subject, Den.

Profit is certainly the prime motivator for all companies, but lower pricing gets you a better share of the market. Sometimes, it's the only way to get into that market.

But that's the result of not enough competition, which is made worse by Sky's monopolistic practices. Netflix and Amazon are gradually breaking this mould and - oh look - what reasonable prices for a huge chunk of content!

Sky/BT/VM prices will become more reasonable as such competition increases, because otherwise, cord cutting will put them in an unsustainable position. I think the loss of Premiership football to Amazon, Google, Twitter or Netflix will hasten the process of price reductions for cable and satellite services. OTT services are a real threat to the existing order, I'm surprised you can't see that.

When are you going to put some substance to these random comments you are throwing in, Den? You have been saying for some time that the things that I am raising will never happen, but you never give your reasons.

I guess you must be satisfied with the status quo, Den, or you wouldn't be so against these ideas, which makes me wonder why you keep complaining about these constant price increases.

Nothing lasts forever, and the existing order of things will soon change.

So after all the excitement at the end of last week Sky set to retain EFL rights with highlights moving to ITV (not confirmed but if they are reporting it so it's probably true)

Interested in what ITV plan to do. Hopefully it won't go head to head with Match of the Day. That would be suicide.

All the reports of SKY's dominance being in decline appear to be nothing more than speculation and wishful thinking. Does anyone realistically think they will lose their grip over Premiership rights? They appear to have reserves of money available that BT don't.

There has to be a point when inflated sports costs plateau. Analysts have been saying this for nearly 5 years now but we're still not seeing it happening. Something has got to give somewhere surely?

Perhaps OB can give us his wise explanation ;) as he has been predicting all sorts of happenings with Sky losing its grip and dominance increasingly to the streaming giants but alas like you l see no sign of it.

Chad has referred only to Sky and BT. I agree with him that while the competition is between those two, Sky will probably continue to win every time, as long as they can maintain or increase their audience share.

The problem for Sky is that there are other challengers waiting in the wings. They have even bigger pockets than Sky and could outbid them if they wanted to. The big question is, will they do so, and will this translate into even higher prices, which is clearly what you believe, or will the new players have different models that see lower prices to bring in a bigger audience and help to combat piracy, and will they sell on their rights to enhance the income to pay for this so that at least some matches can be shown on more platforms?

For these answers, we will have to wait and see. However, simply to respond doggedly that it will never happen without giving an explanation does not really contribute to this debate convincingly, although that view may be your genuinely held opinion.

You seem to be changing your argument every day OB as first you said it was inevitable that Sky would lose the big Premier league rights to the big new shiny rivals and now you seem to be backtracking from that stance and now say you are not so sure so which one is it? as my stance has always been the same for the simple reason in that Sky will not give up the big PL football rights in a month of Sundays even if the bidding rights auction increases by 20% plus and even if it means higher prices for customers as do you think the streaming giants are suddenly going to win these rights by bidding £6 or 7 billion and then do you think they are going to be giving it to their subscribers for diddly squat because if you believe that then you need to come down from the planet Zarg as that ain't going happen and the sooner you realise that the better.

I'm not changing my argument at all, where did you get that from? I said 'the big question is, will they do so?' But I was merely reflecting the fact that you and some others were denying this will happen. Clearly, I don't agree with that view and I think change is inevitable.

Your view that Sky would pay anything to retain these rights does not make business sense, has been contradicted by Sky itself and is clearly nonsense. Sky know perfectly well that the more they put up prices now, the more subscribers they will lose and piracy will start to go through the roof. If customer resistence results in subscribers leaving in droves, where's the profit coming from? You yourself remind us constantly that these companies are purely motivated by profit and you come out with this!

You are clearly not listening to the reasoned arguments being made here. An Amazon type global player will come in with a different model if they wish to break into this market as I firmly believe at least one of them will - if not this time, then next. This will enable them to bid high but then recoup their money by reducing the price of subscriptions. That will attract more customers and will help in the fight againsy piracy. Instead of hogging matches to itself as Sky does, it would bring in other platforms, for which they would be charged. The terrestrials would be able to buy selected matches as well. Basically, a range of new ways would be introduced to make money from these rights. They would not tie one hand behind their backs as Sky does as a result of its overwhelming desire to force as many people as possible to use its own platform to receive content. Whether people subscribe via their own website, through Sky, VM, BT, Talk Talk or wherever would not matter because they would still get their share of the revenue.

It's time to take off those blinkers, Den, before the reality hits you between the eyes! ;)
