I was on a trial software beta thingy ages ago and i asked one of the programming guys what the differance was between a pace and a samsung. He said basically the samsung has 2 processors, one compleatly seperate for the cable modem allowing faster speeds without effecting the tv.
And also can you really see NTL spending a fortune upgrading all the 2 and 3 meg users to samsungs then 6 months later making them useless?
To be honest if the samsungs didnt take 10 meg im guessing they would have upped the speed to something the samsung could support rather than replacing them all again!.

Well this is what I thought but got told I need a SACM if i want the speed.....love this company, its like a game of cluedo! write down the drivel you are told on the phone and piece together the truth......Ruth Rendle (sp) could have a field day on her books!

I guess it's probably down to contention then. I live in pensioner-ville, so not too much competition for bandwidth.

Rumour has it they will only go up to about 6/7 meg max.

You will not get 10mb over Wireless B devices, the upper limit is ~4.5mbit. Wireless G is again half its often regarded speed.

Are any of your peeps with RUBBISH (i.e. below 10Mb) downloads using wireless networking?
No, no wireless networking and I'm using a SACM. As I've said before, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it - as it's a new service, there is bound to be a bit of instability in the beginning.

I have got 10mb now and it's very impressive.

It isn't running at 10mb on my laptop (wirelessly) - but downloads seem to settle down to full speed (see screeny) so I'm quite happy :)

Not to worried about when i get the upgrade, but the bulk of the upset on here today is caused by very poor communication skills from NTL

Agree with the trouble free Terayon, had mine now since i had cable installed about 9 years ago, never missed a beat in all that time(even when neighbours had outages due to optimization ect).Seriously thinking about NOT giving CS a phone and requesting a new modem as what i am getting now is fine with me.

Edit:Phoned CS earlier and was told the 10mbit wasn't rolling out nationally till March 2006 then was hung up on.Phoned back 5 mins later, spoke to the same guy and he upgraded me there and then.Good to see the left hand still don't know what the right is doing.....cheared my day up if nothing else

better than 5mbit, i suggest you guys give it a try, those of you who are getting low amounts.

what settings did u use?

Ok I live in Leamington Spa (On the Coventry network I think) and have just pressed the upgrade button from the 2mb I am currently on. 10 secs later and i am on now getting 10mb! So i have been upgraded. I use a Terryon(?) 210 moden which was installed in 2001. Seems fine to me.

So although i have to pay an extra £13 for a month or three I get the speed increase.

The news story on the portal page says "...it comes with a new 75GB monthly download allowance..."

I wonder if this is just a slip of the keyboard, or has it gone back to being download only again, rather than up + down?

Only the 3GB cap was up+down, the others are/were download only.

Just a little addendum before I head off to bed. From what I understand, even the older USB connection used by the Terayon should be able to cope with 10MBits as long as there isn't too much of a USB "load" on the PC. However, someone here stated that the TJ210 can only cope with 7-8MBits so I would still need a new modem to achieve maximum speeds. I thought I'd do a little more digging on Terayon specs; couldn't find anything on their website but I did discover something interesting posted on this very forum at the beginning of the year:

Quote:

Nope - Terayon Terajet TJ210 cable modems are capable of handling around 28Mbit downstream (I think - though I'm sure Ignition will correct me ;) ). This is limited, however, by the connection to the PC - 10Mbps Ethernet or 11Mbps USB. In any case, they can certainly handle 3Mbps, so no change will be needed.
Now I realise that this statement emphasises the word CAPABLE but surely saying that the TJ210 can only deal with 7-8MBits is underestimating its capabilities? Sorry if I'm rambling a bit, it's just that I don't want to replace a perfectly good modem that might not even need replacing anyway! IvIaXiIvIuS, do you have any way of knowing for sure that it is your Terayon that is holding your connection back (albeit slightly)?

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Yes i am wondering the same thing, my terajet TJ210 has been great, its even taken a couple of knocks in the past and has been connected for about 4 years with almost no downtime. However i am getting about 800-900kbsec downspeed at the moment depending on site. Microsoft is the best. My newsserver is giving me about 700kb.

Can't find any specs online about his modem though.

I am also running through a Lynksis WRT54g wireless router.
