I have a 360 set up so I can use different regions and the Tivo for UK Netflix. The 360 only outputs DD and 720p, the sound output through the Tivo sounds better. Do they actually feed different streams? DD+ is backward compatible with DD, so if your device can't play DD+ it just plays back the DD track?

I've read conflicting things on whether this happens in practice; The Dolby website, when I read it a couple of years ago, suggested it was. But I've read in various places, when I was researching this, that if your AV amp can't decode DD+. then feeding it to the amp may result in stereo.

It was a concern to me, as my bedroom AV amp (my old Yammy RX-V1500) can't decode DD+. Fortunately, my WDTV Live SMP sends regular DD via optical out, so not a problem. I have another WDTV Live SMP in the lounge which sends DD+ via HDMI to a Yammy RX-1900, which can decode it.

It can get a little confusing at times.

Nowtv now has chromecast support and has also added itv encore to it's entertainment pass package.

Amazon Fire TV box launching in UK.

£79. But Prime members can get it for £49 if ordered by Monday. I've seen October reported as the ship date.

Even if you are are not a 'full' Prime member (ie Prime Instant) or not at all you can order the free Prime trial for 30 days and pre order it for £49 and then cancel if you want.

You obviously need the little box to get the "Prime" service from Amazon, yes? So in other words you'd need to wait till October launch? If i'm missing something here please correct me, I'm pretty interested in this from Amazon, but have never looked into it before, I've used the free 30 day trial from Netflix, but obviously that was done through the Tivo, am I correct in saying that you cannot access Amazon's Prime in this way?

afaik you can't get amazon via TIVO. When we can, I will seriously consider dumping the xl package (unless they bundle them all in together) in which case I will keep the lot!

Rumours have been numerous that Amazon Video will be added to Tivo, but they are purely rumours.

You can get Amazon video via a PC, some blueray Players, and I (think) some smart TVs. my old Sony 370 BR player gets it, but not with 5.1 audio.

Amazon Prime Instant (used to be Lovefilm) is the same as Netflix. You can use apps from Google, Apple, and also on some streaming players (Roku3), and also some Smart Tv's but its not as widespead as the Netflix app availability.

You can use it from browser as well (which again is the same as Netflix).

So no, you do not 'need' the box to access Prime.

The issue which actually gets resolved for me is that I want one box that does BOTH Netflix AND Amazon Prime Instant. I don't have a Smart TV, and although most things (Tivo, WD Live, etc) have Netflix they dont have the Amazon one. I have a WD TV Live which again has iplayer, Netflix and I can browse local video.

This box has everything I want, and for £49 its a bargain.

The slightly confusing thing is the difference between 'Prime' and 'Prime instant' subscription. Prime is a £79.99 per year subscription which includes Prime Instant and gives you free one day delivery. Prime Instant is a £5.99 a month subscription which just gives you the Streaming video service.

The only downside with regard to Netflix is if you use a smart DNS service; you can't change DNS settings within the Amazon fire TV itself and would need to change them in your router, which would therefore need to be a separate one and the VM Super hub set to modem mode.

As far as i can see there aren't any UK TV Catchup services on it? When i cancel VM i need something for that as the upstairs TV is a dumb one.

Not interested, yet.

Roku has 4oD , Demand 5 , ITV Player , BBC IPlayer , Netflix , Now TV , YouTube the only major one missing sadly is Amazon Instant
