But sits only been officially unveiled and shown off today after FCC approval. I wonder if the specs on this are better then the Cisco box? and if this runs really fast I wonder will it be due to a new code drop or specs?

There is a lot of speculation in that article. Main reason the Samsung V+HD boxes are better in performance is that there is about 3 years difference in technology between them.

The TiVo boxes I expect will be pretty much identical in performance, design and technology

Good read?

Quote:

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 09/08/11 -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), a leader in advanced television services and personal video recorders (PVRs), and Virgin Media Inc. (NASDAQ: VMED) (LSE: VMED), the UK's leading digital entertainment provider, today announced details of a key new feature coming to their next-generation connected TV offering which will allow customers to take control of the TiVo powered service through a cutting-edge iPad companion app. The feature will be made available as part of the first major software update for the system and is designed to build on the user experience of the award-winning service. Virgin Media plans to roll-out the software update, which will feature the companion app as well as other new features to be announced, in the coming months.

The TiVo companion app will allow Virgin Media customers to use their Apple iPads to interact directly with their TiVo service and extend their viewing experience beyond the remote control. After installing the free TiVo companion app, users can interact with the elegant, intuitive TiVo user interface directly on their iPads to search across Virgin Media's content, including the TV Guide and thousands of hours of content available through its video on demand library, without interrupting what they are already watching on TV. With just a couple of swipes on the iPad user can immediately and seamlessly begin viewing the content they have discovered via their TiVo app right on their TV.

I said that because the V box and V+HD boxes are different in their size and shape.

If nothing elese my current V+HD Samsung box is great so with a bit of luck the TiVo box will be just a quick. :)

Yes I hope that they fetch it out on other platforms as well. This bit has got me thinking from the first link, Could they be getting ready so that you are able to stream from one box to the other? Or could it be me reading in to it?

I would like to hope if the Samsung boxes are in anyway better (ie. larger hard drive ,extra tuners ) than the Cisco boxes then those of us who took VM Tivo from the beginning will get free upgrades to the new box. I would also hope that those of us who have Galaxy pads (or any other android pads ) will get the same app as the iPads at the same time.

Not going to happen.

What would be the point of scrapping boxes less than six months old? The Samsung boxes will be the SAME as the Cisco boxes - apart from who makes them

scotmac 08-09-2011 17:32

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I was only thinking that maybe new boxes would be the same as the new American TiVos with the four tuners, as we all know VM could and would bring this out if they thought it would bring in new customers (ie. new Samsung V+ boxes an upgraded box UK5 but I still have the SA V+ UK4 ),so VM have done it before and I`m sure they could again.

Stephen 08-09-2011 18:05

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

The Samsung box will look the exact same as the current Cisco box and feature the same size of hard drive. It's simply a case of dual vendor like VM are doing with the Superhub.

Stephen ,I have seen plenty of posts saying how much quicker and better in other ways the sammy v+ is when compared it to the SA v+. If this turns out to be the same with the new sammy Tivo then VM should surely offer early adopters the new box as an free exchange.

I would never go back to an SA after changing to the Sammy. However I no longer use that either since getting TiVo.

I can assure you that it's just Vm taking on a second vendor for the box. It will be no different at all.

Been looking on the VM H&S Forums and i came accross this,

Quote:

There is also an unconfirmed rumour that TiVo had the red button functionality 10 months ago when it was first being trialled, and the BBC changed the license agreement which meant it was withdrawn again.
And this

Quote:

As I've said in a separate post, the introduction of new features to TiVo planned for the second half of this year will not come all in a single update.

I just hope to set expectations because it seems that a rumour has been heavily perpetuated on this board that there is one all encompassing update to come. In actuality, there will be a large update, but other feature updates will follow very soon after this update (as their introduction had the update itself as a dependency).

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Just spotted this and some are not happy with the new Tivo box in the US?

Quote:

Can somebody tell TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO ) that this isn't an arms race anymore?

The DVR pioneer introduced the TiVo Premiere Elite yesterday, and the specs are juicy. The new $499 box has four tuners, allowing owners to record four different shows while they watch a fifth. Storage has been bumped up to a beefy two terabytes, which is essentially enough space to save 300 hours of high-def television.

This all sounds great until you remember that it's not 2001 anymore. It's 2011, and couch potatoes just don't think that way.

Who needs to records four shows at once? We live in streaming times, where content is available on demand. What are the chances that there will be four things on live that you will ultimately want to watch anyway?

Storage? I get it. Data keeps getting cheaper. Seagate (NYSE: STX ) just introduced a four-terabyte external drive at an attractive $250 price point.

Still, this is a DVR, and we're living in the era of cloud computing. Who needs to save shows when Hulu or Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX ) or the broadcaster itself will gladly serve it up for you later? If you can fill your TiVo with 300 hours of high-def content then you don't need a Premiere Elite: You need a vacation.

Obviously TiVo isn't dumb. Its boxes also do a lot of the streaming extracurricular work that set-top boxes have to do these days. However, when you pair an expensive DVR with a costly subscription plan, TiVo's value proposition is just out of touch.

This isn't some anecdotal rant. The numbers prove it. TiVo may have posted better-than-expected quarterly results two weeks ago, but we're still talking about another profitless showing. More importantly, TiVo continues to shed net subscribers. TiVo had 1.93 million cumulative subscriptions at the end of July, 33,000 fewer TV buffs than it watched over just three months earlier and a whopping 456,000 plunge over the past year.

What does it tell you when the specs get bigger but the couch potato count gets smaller? If you're that one person that's breezing through this article because you have four shows recording right now that you want to see later, you need to get out more.

Oh, and while you're there, take TiVo with you.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Can't really agree with any of that, why would you not want 2TB? Not everything is available on demand.

Why wouldn't you want 4 tuners? There is quite a few times during the week where there are three tuners active on my box, I say why stop at 4 why not 6 or 8 then everyone can have a tuner of their own in the household?

The guy just sound like the usual idiot who wants to spout of and be negative for the sake of it.

denphone 09-09-2011 21:22

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

l certainly would not mind having 4 tuners as l record a fair bit and several times l have had to miss a recording out because of clashes.

Pbryanw 10-09-2011 13:35

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Also more hard-drive space means more room for TiVo suggestions. And four tuners means more suggestions can be recorded at the same time. Just depends whether you use this service a lot.

I'm quite happy with my 500GB TiVo, but I'm the only one who uses it. I can see that those with families (and especially large ones), the more hard-drive space for programmes, the better.

Had Tivo a few days and enjoying it. First 'Tivo' Grand Prix this weekend and not having much time I like to record and watch qualifying in FF. With the V+ a small graphic in bottom left showed FF speed. With Tivo when in FF there's a bar across the whole lower screen - which obscures the laptimes!! A step backwards?

Cheers
Grim

zantarous 11-09-2011 22:22

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Its not a step backward it is just different, the bar lets you skip to the white strips with one button press. Also the bar is used when watching a buffered recording so you can see what time it started.

arcimedes 12-09-2011 08:58

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

It is very annoying as most programmes that have information on progress such as tennis scores are obscured. It would improve matters if the transparency of the bar could be changed or you could choose where it went.

On the VM Tivo box there are four lights next to the record button. In the guide it says one of these is light 11, a downloading light which is supposed to show blue when a download is in progress. However, in the picture accompanying this text the light is clearly red, and I did wonder if a fourth tuner was a possibility on this box at some point in the future?

I have questions as I am thinking of getting one :)

- Is Tivo having trouble with SD pictures, as per gadge?

- If, when Tivo has taken it into its head to record a 'suggestion' at the same time as the other 2 tuners are recording, (which Gunslinger informed me about) can a person cancel the 'suggestion'?

- Has Tivo got the new test SD Channel that MB has seen on channnel 890. The new channel is called ''Test 43'' and is also broadcasting On Demand Previews plus EPG info is showing the same info as Virgin Channel 100.

Me thinks that the TiVo prioritises such that it will record programmes you want in preference to ones it wants to record for you. If you aren't watching live TV then the TiVo can record 3 programmes simultaneously.

For what its worth my sd picture wasn't good when tivo first arrived but it seems to have settled down quite nicely. I know this isn't simply a case of me getting used to it because on install I had my samsung v+hd box moved to another room with the same model tv so I have a direct comparison.

Over all I'm in the "do it, you won't regret it camp".

Just to clarify something, the sky sports red button works on the v+ box but not the tivo box at the moment, is that where we stand ?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Yes, TiVo needs to have the Red button app and services written, coded and tested which will take longer to get sorted as TiVo has never had that sort of service before.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Ok, thanks. Something to keep in mind as I plan to upgrade and switch sky sports back on if they ever sort my signal out

I can confirm that the american style remote control with the slide out QWERTY keyboard, will launch before the end of this year.
The remotes will automatically be sent out to all TiVo customers at no cost.

Not a brief but on the latest tivo update they are doing away with the need for pin on recordings, can order live events and some other bug fixes and tweaks still no reminders :(

Wasn't it meant to be a date in October? I'm sure I read that a big update was happening then for the TIVO box.

In my head im sure its october but I dont want to commit just incase I am wrong:)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I think people may not want to pin their hopes on October as a a major bug could be found at anytime. Heck in the US they had to roll back the multi room viewing when so many people had issues with it a few months ago.

Holy crap, that is great! If they can up the speed of the software and get the remote out at the same time I will be in heaven!

I have a problem where when I switch the TV back on the TiVo box does not show a picture until I unplug the HDMI and plug it back in. Also, about once a month I get a 'HDMI connection not valid' message (something similar) so I imagine they're related.

I've tried various HDMI cables and the TV doesn't have issues with other devices so I'm guessing I have a faulty TiVo box? Any help/insight appreciated.

It should be £49.95 one off cost and maybe £40 installation and no extra monthly cost, although almost everyone on CS say that the TiVo £3 is per box not account. So he may have some hassle with that part.

Regards

John.
