From Colin Smedley comes this magnificent image that seems to show 55,000 pounds+ of Blackburn Buccaneer hovering over the runway. In the 1980s and 90s, No 208 Sqn RAF were the real experts in ultra low-level under the radar nuclear strikes. During the International Air Tattoo in 1993, to mark the squadron's 75th birthday, this Buccaneer S.2B was flown at an altitude of just 5 feet for the entire length of RAF Fairford's runway. From inside the massive strike aircraft, it must surely have felt as though they were actually in the ground. Thank God for ground effect. Photo Colin Smedley

Ground effect isn't that relevant at the speeds this thing will go at especially as there's no flaps down to reduce the stall speed.. hence my puzzlement at the "entire length" comment especially as the runway is nearly 3kms long (I know as I had to fod plod it more than once)

It was a fantastic day, there were over 150,000 there yesterday, which has broke their record. I suspect there were more yesterday than saturday because of the Vulcan.
It took me 2hours to get out of Southport town centre but it was worth it.

Very nice.

Don't make excuses for hand held - I always do hand held at airshows - a tripod is too limiting unless you have a gimball head.

I tried a monopod at the last one - still way too restrictive - only had a horizontal pan head.

We went Saturday & Sunday, as my wife had never been to an airshow before. Definitely more there on Sunday, they actually shut the gates mid afternoon.

After spending an 90 minutes to go 15 miles to the hotel on Saturday, we stayed for a meal on Sunday at La Quila on Eastbank Street before setting off home. That route out to the M58 was still queuing at 19:30 so we took the A565 via Ainsdale instead.

Superb photos Cobbydaler.
I saw the Vulcan too. It was in Cosby and then after performing there went down to you in Southport.

The fast jets are on manoeuvres over Loch Lomond again. A Typhoon just went past the window, just about low enough for me to see what was in the pilot's lunch box. The aircraft had a tail fin painted solid green with a horizontal yellow stripe. Anyone know whose markings those are?
