It did start as a thread about Clarkson punching the producer which was current affairs news at the time, however the topic has drifted somewhat as events unfolded.

The old format was 3 middle aged, white, English blokes mucking around and having a good time. The cars were simply a vehicle (sorry) for the show. One of the things that worked was that they were doing stuff that the audience would like to do but don't dare (even if they could afford it). Even the "foreign specials" normally ended up complimenting the country and their people so it was all very tongue in cheek.

The new format hasn't really got that same gelling. They are mixed in nationality, age, race so they can't exactly do the same thing. They do need more time to work out what works and tune things up but the modern audience (and bean counters) are too fickle and easily bored to wait. It may never work of course which would be a shame as it's one of the few programmes my wife and I can watch together.

Quote from The Sun:

Top Gear host Matt LeBlanc dramatically quit the show in a disastrous blow for BBC bosses.

The former Friends star, 50, said he did not want to extend his £1million-a-year contract and the next series will be his last.

He said he was no longer “comfortable” splitting his time between the US and the UK.

His daughter Marina, 14, lives in the States with her mum, LeBlanc’s ex-wife Melissa McKnight, 53.

In addition, his US sitcom Man With A Plan was renewed for a third series.

But a Top Gear source said: “The show will now struggle to remain relevant without a big name at the helm. The Beeb have been left with a headache as a result now.
Viewing figures are down to about 1.5m from a peak of 5.1m at the point Clarkson and co left the show.

Could this be the end?

Nah the brand is too valuable plus the rating fall probably suggests Le Blanc wasn't the answer anyway. Although ratings for most things have been declining with the rise of streaming.

Ratings don't matter. Top Gear is a bigger draw overseas now than it was under Clarkson. BBC keep expanding their coverage.

Having hosts drop out all the time does matter. Anything built is instantly lost and all of a sudden you're competing with Doctor Who with cast changes. Essentially having to soft reboot the show each time spells trouble with something like Top Gear. With ratings in the UK not really meaning anything its probably best to take the chance to establish a domestic host/s that see it as a long term project. Doesn't necessarily need to be a superstar host.

Not a fan of the guy but throwing names about, Jack Whitehall. Assuming he ever did get a licence. Then two semi serious blokes. Jenson Button, Ben Collins etc.
