Both 10/10.

And then today:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

10/10 :D

Star Wars is back!

What are the TDE like to watch? I have them but I've not watched them yet.

Surprisingly *very good* quality.

With the choice between watching those *without* all of Lucas' later messing around, or watching my BDs with 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio *but* with said BS, I'm happy I went with the Despecialized Editions for this re-watch, and I'd go with them again next time.

Well, I'm glad to see the generally high ratings for The Force Awakens - I've booked a ticket for the 31st...to give myself a bit of leeway re the kids. Past experience has taught me the wisdom of this approach.

Learn from experience, I do! :p:

Star Wars 7, a very generous 8/10.

I have to say it did make me feel a bit old.

Though the more I think about it, it'll probably end up 7/10 (Maybe less).

MalteseFalcon 30-12-2015 15:35

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

Tangled (had to watch with sister a couple of weeks ago) gets a very generous 3/10 from me, Get Smart gets a solid 8/10 and The Other Woman gets a 9/10. I'm knocking a point off that rating because of a VERY shallow reason. Namely, no Nicki Minaj in a bikini. See, I said I was shallow.

I wouldn't have given it as low as a 5 because I did think it was a great film but I wasn't able to see the point of Blofeld being the film's villain. I prefer Bond films to be fresh and 'stand-alone' so bringing in a previous character like that as well as references the antagonists from DC's other 007 movies just seemed lazy.

Me too, I would only give it 4/10.

IMO it is just a formulaic paper thin plot to fill in between the action sequences. Gone are all the great characters like Oddjob, Rosa Kleib, Jaws ETC. M, Q and Moneypenny are all duds and none of the Bond girls would turn a head while walking past a building site.

The franchaise is a dinosaur from a bygone era that is well past it's shelf life.

Thats what a lot of the bond films were though.

That is why Casino Royal was a refreshing reboot of the series. But sadly it was not to stay that way and is heading back to the usual series traits.Skyfall was brilliant though.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw

The Force Awakens - at least 9.8 out of 10!

Oh, BTW, I didn't see any of the supposed bloopers...but that's probably because I wasn't bloody well looking for them!!! I was doing what - correct me if I'm wrong - you're supposed to do when you go to see a film: I watched the damn film!!! Bloopers be bleeped!!!

I was greatly concerned - as of course were hundreds of millions of Star Wars fans worldwide - that the spirit of the original film could never be recaptured. We needn't have worried. J.J. Abrams got it spot on.

Spoiler:
The only thing I was concerned about was/is Kylo Ren; he seems too young to be so steeped in evil. Mind you...stopping a blaster bolt in midair?! Whoa, major Force power there! Where'd he learn that trick?! It was the coolest thing since Darth Maul's lightstaff!

And who or what exactly is the Supreme Leader? Where was he when Darth Sidious was consolidating the Empire and his Force powers? Hopefully there'll be a bit of background info in the next film and/or the novelisation of this one.

Who retrieved Luke's/Vader's lightsabre from Cloud City, and why?

How did anyone steal the Falcon?! I'd have thought Han and Chewie would fight to the death rather than let that happen!

But the music and sound effects definitely echoed the original and did the business; it just wouldn't be Star Wars without those groundbreaking sound effects and the romantic classical score. Casting and costuming were also spot-on. John Mollo, the original costume designer, was told by George Lucas: "The audiences mustn't consciously notice the costumes. If they do, you've gone wrong." He didn't, and nor did the designer for this film.

Looking forward to the next one!

Actually, I dont really see the need for spoiler tags now.

If you havent seen it by now, you probably are not that interested, and there is plenty of spoilers across the internet now.

Spoilers are easily avoided on any page headed "Star Wars" - not so easy in a general movie thread where there is no prior indication of what you're going to be reading when clicking the link in your user CP.

The Hateful Eight: 7/10 - Long film but well worth a watch. It's just an interesting story which isn't so much about twists but finding out about the characters and watching the plot unfold. There were suggestions that Tarantino wrote it in a way that it could be performed on stage and it shows. I saw the 70mm version too which was cool.

Creed: 7/10 - Good film. Not much to say about it really. You like the characters and you feel involved with the story rooting for them.

The Big Short: 9/10 - Awesome film! Funny and engrossing with some interesting ways of explaining what is happening. The soundtrack is very good too. It's one of those films that requires very little work on your part in terms of keeping your attention. It grabs it early and never lets go. You really don't care how long it's being going on for or how long is left.

It's up for a lot of Oscars including Best Director, Best Film and Best Actress. It's unlikely to win the first two (although it's currently my film of the year) but Brie Larson is favourite for Best Actress - deservingly so.

Also the writer is Irish. Not sure if you were joking there. ;)

Bridge of Spies, a good 8/10

Has that typical 'Spielberg' American fare type of feeling to it which stood out a bit too much, it let it down a little. But a great story nonetheless.

Legend 8/10

Tom Hardy nailed it I must admit. But obviously it's all been done before with 'The Krays' (1990) so learnt nothing new. I think I do prefer the 1990 version slightly more though.

It's not supposed to be a remake but the next episode, instead we got a rehash of different bits from the previous 6 episodes mixed in with small very inaccurate snippets from some of the books..

I've been a Star wars fan since I saw Ep4 at the age of 8 but this is the first one to disappoint me.

Yes rehash is a better choice of word and the reason I'm disappointed is because I expected so much from it and imo it ended up being pretty average

Call me a purest but I detest post production 3D, glad you enjoyed such a poor movie though. An you weren't even paid to give 7/10 unlike certain sites ;)

By the way, if you get a chance to see it in 2D imax you'll get the best experience!! But I understand most people just want "3D it's 3D!!!!!!!" Lol.

You obviously have an issue with subjective experiences - just because you like/dislike something, it doesn't mean others have to have the same experience; that's what makes life interesting, rather than a homogenous boring everyone thinks the same...

I saw it in 3D IMAX because my son-in-law bought the tickets - I, my son-in-law's father, my son-in-law's two friends, and my daughter enjoyed it; my son-in-law wasn't so keen, but he didn't feel the need to disparage others because of it.

Do you have any proof that reviewers were paid to score it well, or are you just repeating internet gossip? Considering it took $424 million on it's opening weekend, you would have thought if it was so bad, word of mouth would have killed it (like it did for the FF4 remake).

Post production 3D has come a long way in the last few years and most of the time it can actually be rather good and sometimes better than filmed in 3D.

Personally I liked it in 3D.

Also the critics did give the film a hard time and some would say they had it in for the film from the moment it was announced. 90% of all my friends and family that have seen the film did in fact enjoy it, don't get me wrong its not perfect by any means though.

As for paid reviewers that is just internet rumour/gossip.

Story fair.

I have seen all the Bond films some are better than others but they had a better story line.

The Hobbit. 6/10. Superb cinematography as we've come to expect from Peter Jackson but, as I feared, the story is too thin to support a long film let alone a trilogy and the escape sequence from the Orcs in the Mines of Moria was rather too fanciful.

:eeek: why? I thought it was flipping fantastic. It was done so well. I thought it was great how they managed to keep the story focused around Captain America and how torn he was between he allegiance to his friend and the Avengers but at the same time involve all the other Avengers. I thought Spiderman and Ant Man was phenomenal and I properly laughed out loud. When I heard about Black Panther I thought they were just chucking another character in for the sake of it and £££ but I thought he was excellent as well and I am looking forward to the new movie now and am half mardy that I have to wait till 2018 for it. Yeah, it is the first film i have ever seen where all the animals look real. It was really well made and refreshing to watch because i havent seen the original since i was 10 and i couldnt remember any of the story at all.

They did it just right, couple of songs, but not over the top, animals did look real, I could see children being completely taken in.

The new Jungle Book is faithful to the original story, NOT the Disney soppy rubbish.

I mean if you read the original text to our fairy tales eve some adults would have nighmares.

Look at Cinderella, the glass slippers were actually FUR, it was a mistranslation, and at the end the ugly sisters cut of their toes to try and make the slippers fit.

Yes and Disney are making live action versions of a lot of classics, Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast are two due out.

Disney have got with it, now the tech has caught up with the vision, I suspect many more films will be pretty good.

London Has Fallen. 1/10

Okay I wasn't expecting much to begin with, but wow what a stinker.

oh dude that movie was fantastic. Yes it was far fetched and a lot of things had to go wrong and it was completely unrealistic but I would give it a solid 7/10. It is what I call a classic Sunday afternoon movie; excellent entertainment.

If it was meant to be a parody, the I'd give it 7/10 for being so bad (I didn't expect it to be too serious). But it wasn't. It was just bad on so many levels it was embarrassing to watch at times. The CGI was probably the worse I've seen, dialogue/script 'It must have been a trap' was hilarious. Probably just geared up for the US audience as I was waiting for the 'God Bless America' as the final line of the film and I was right. I would probably watch it again as these types of films becomes better the 2nd time around as it's one of those it's just sooo bad it's good. (Same as the Happening 2008) etc.

I loved Olympus has Fallen and London was just more of the same. Great mindless action movie. Don't think about it too much and it is enjoyable.

Grimsby - 6/10 - Usual SBC fare. Very funny in parts but some jokes were too off the wall even for me. Some scenes could have been left out. ie the elephant bit!!

Indeed its pure escapism and people just have to take these films for what they are and not get too serious sometimes.

deadpool 9/10

wow, we just watched this, missus and I really really enjoyed it, so funny, so exciting, I'm guessing Mr Lee loved his cameo even more than he normally does :)

X-men: Apocalypse - 5/10

Starts well, drops off in the middle and ends on a pretty mediocre tone. Riddled with the same stupid arguments as all the others. With even new stupider back stories for future character redemption. Same old cliches. The usual great action scenes and CGI etc. Literally has nothing on DOFP though.

I struggled to spot the difference between Mystique and Katniss. Its almost as if they asked her to copy the character emotion.

This and Civil war were my two big Superhero movies of the year and its obvious Civil war wins pretty easily in the end. Ultimately, Deadpool was the true winner overall though. An easy 10/10

Warcraft 8/10

Great movie for WoW fans alike but I can see why there's negativity. I was left confused at various parts and forgetful of lore. There'll be massively different reviews, I can't see many watching this without knowing the lore and then enjoying it.

We'll get some truly epic sequels should it make it that far. The film started ahead of the very start of the lore. So stories like the Lich King will need introductions as will the scourge. Then again that would be the same way the game did it. Still got the rise of thrall to go, the under city, the formation of Durotar and rise of the horde and the start of Orgrimmar.

I'm not sure whether a hobbit style fantasy would have been better. They've really stuck to the source orcs and mages and thus a massive CGI barrier is formed. Each to their own but I know folks that were expecting them to move away a bit and go down the hobbit style route.
