Happy to be corrected if you can find an official reference from BoxNation saying otherwise

Taken from the DS satellite forum:

Hi guys,

Just wanted to clarify what we're offering.

BoxNation is a brand new boxing channel that has exclusive rights to show some of the UK’s biggest fights, as well as showing classic fights and the latest boxing news.

As of December BoxNation will become a subscription only service, and will be available for just £10 a month. The date on which the subscription fee is introduced will depend on whether you are a Sky or Virgin Media subscriber, or you plan to watch the online service through the BoxNation website.

In the meantime, you can sign up to our mailing list to be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to a spectacular night of boxing at Wembley on Nov 5th. You’ll receive updates on upcoming fights and exclusive boxing news.

Visit boxnation.tv for more information.

Thanks,

BoxNation

The new channel will be included free of charge in Sky and Virgin Media packages.

So is that free for everyone or just Sky Sports subscribers?

The only thing I ever trust in the Daily Mail is the date.

If they are charging Freeview viewers then I guess everyone else would pay in someway so I would guess it would be free to Sky Sports subscribers on Sky and Virgin.

Muppetman posted something about this new channel about 7 to 10 days ago, which I trashed for being no more than speculation. At least the new channel will not cost current SKY Sports customers anything extra.........for now!

I suppose this gives people the option to watch the races live without having to fork out for a full SKY subscription. F1 fans still aren't happy though.

It was a rumour found on the DS forums , looks like it could now come to fruition ;) as I remember Chad you said the bloke was talking trash :D maybe he knew more than we all thought.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

How can they show a subscription channel on freeview unless people have the boxes that take the top up cards? That's going to cost a bit more than a tenner a month if you first have to upgrade your box.

I wonder if "included free on Sky and Virgin"means just that or if it really means "(if you already have the Sports package)". If so, I wonder if we Virgin customers will be able to subscribe to just the F1 channel for £10 a month, or if we will get stung for a full subscription.

I'm sure it would be free only to Sky Sports subscribers , like you say it will be interesting to see if VM/Sky customers have the option to take it as a standalone

I think if either Sky or VM charge for this channel, they should boycott it, F1 l believe is the motor racing channel, and they are worth millions, so what do they need money for.

I still have a good ol' SD CRT TV and the quality of 5* and 5 USA on VM has been appalling of late. It's like watching NTSC on a very early slow LCD TV which hasn't been dusted for three years.

There's latency, pixelation and grainy, washed-out colour. What's going on with the bandwidth?

Depends, some will be of a HD quality from the master copy. Look at "Friends" on Comedy Central HD :)

I noticed that about a month ago... tell you what, really gives subscription TV value over the regular DVDs when you see shows from a few decades back recut to be HD 16:9 instead of SD 4:3.

It's why I'm waiting to see the Star Trek Next Gen HD remaster - which I hope will appear on one of the Sky channels at somepoint

Although knowing our luck it will be Atlantic

Even if it not in HD, it will look better because it can be upscaled.

Seeing how good the screenshots look I think iw ill have to stump up the cash for the Bluray on this.

Oh, I have a soft spot for TNG. About half the episodes were rubbish, but the great ones are among my favourite shows of all time. The Inner Light, Q Who?, Tapestry, Cause and Effect... that's good viewing. And knowing my luck, due to get the HD 16:9 treatment on a channel only for L and XL customers. :o:

Yeah, when i think the broadcasts of the first series on CH4/E4 over the years where horrible, and in 4:3 to, the Comedy central HD remasters are mega, now i want them on Blu-ray. :)

p.s. some of the only fools remasters look ace as well, pity we don't get gold in HD, maybe they could be broadcast on Watch sometime in the future.

Does depend on how it was filmed but often the res it was filmed in is much higher than hd
Which is why we have blu ray versions of terminator etc

Anything shot in 35mm is higher than HD resolution so once scanned in to a computer a 4K master is usually made.

This means that a 1080p copy can easily be made.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

All of that having been said, I doubt that the quality of, for example, The Professionals or The Saint would be improved by upscaling to HD. They are pretty poor quality in SD as it is.

Overall, if I was looking for additional HD channels on VM, I would be inclined to forgo ITV 2/3/4 for now in favour of channels showing actual HD programming or films.

Regardless of one's viewing preference surely there is more to be gained by getting HD versions of some of the documentary channels than channels showing older, poor video and sound quality SD shows.

DaMac 26-11-2011 15:20

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

The Saint was shot i think in panavision and i seem to remember when ITV was trialing HD broadcasts a few years ago it was programmes like the saint and space 1999 that they used and they looked pretty good.

Not easily as you still need to do a lot of work, like cleaning up the old film and usually on very old stuff the SFX would need a lot of work to clean up or redo, so if the show required little or no FX then yes there a good chance that a HD transfer will be done.

Media Boy EXCLUSIVE: Virgin are in talks with BSkyB for the Sky Sports F1 HD Channel.

My insider has confirmed to me today that Virgin Media are in talks with BSkyB for both Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports F1 HD to launch on Virgin TV from March 2012.

©copyright 2011 Media Boy 2006 - 2011. An ''Keep it real and free'' Production.

I was told last week that Virgin Media will be having ''Freeviews'' over the Christmas Holidays on Virgin TV starting December 1st.

99% of me thinks Magic TV will be one of them.

Hope to have an update on what channels that Virgin TV will give freeviews to next month by Wednesday Night.

D'oh!

Of course, if you go back far enough, all of those ITC / ATV shows were 'filmed' at Elstree Studios rather than being videotaped and so, ironically, were High Definition whereas later videotaped shows were not.

i'm sure sky sports f1 hd will be a seperate channel or the sky sports hd package and that package would get a price increase.

there is no way it will be in xl and almost certainly won't get it in the sky sports package for the same price as sky will charge virgin a lot of money for it.

I can't help thinking that Sky are unusually bending over backwards to give this channel to as many of their subscribers as possible with no subscription increase. All Sky Sports customers AND all hd customers must surely be a large majority of their subscriber base. An extra channel for then for nothing? I am clinging to the hope that they are contractually obliged to have this channel available to as many people as possible. To my mind, xl is as close to hd pack as Virgin gets. I live in hope!

If you think about it logically, if they are doing this due to the backlash and that they will be launching a PTV channel on terrestrial then they have to show it on a separate channel. If it does come to VM, which I am sure it will, then I would be certain if you subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and 2 you will get it. If there is no Freeview channel then its anyones guess.

Spotify rollout on time. S'alright, but I'd rather have Grooveshark... better selection, and if there's something you like and can't see you can add it and then a few hours later stream it anywhere. Also no need for two damn accounts (with Spotify you must have a Spotify account; to get that you need a Facebook account.)

Just a HINT HINT HINT, Virgin Media. :D

Grooveshark doesn't respect copyright laws and is currently being sued. Considering Virgin are/were a record label I doubt they'll be promoting a service that allow you to pirate music.

You can register for any other app via mytivoapps - that's just for association. You have to have existing accounts

However for Spotify you can log in without having to do the association

Due to the licensing of the Virgin brand by Virgin Group (Virgin Enterprises Limited) the connection between Virgin Media, Virgin Records (Virgin Music) a division of EMI, Virgin Atlantic Airways and the many other Virgin-branded companies can be about as loose as the connection between virgin and Britney Spears.

However, no self-respecting organisation, whether or not they ever had a connection with the music business, should or would condone music piracy.

Is it me or does the name Spotify, in the context of popular music, conjure up images of acne-ridden teens? :( Couldn't the Swedes have come up with a better name?

Just to Note, EMI has been taken over by Universal Music (records) and Sony Music (publishing), so Virgin Records is now part of Universal Music

You know, it's been written somewhere that for each listen of a track an artist gets a whooping £0.00006 or something like that, so in fact Spotify is almost as bad for artists as Grooveshark or any similar free service, with the added insult of looking like the artist gets a good deal just because it offers a paid-for "premium" service.

That's the reason given for why some record labels (minor ones I believe) have withdrawn their tracks from spotify recently.

True - I would have mentioned other streaming services that do it but I figured it would be off topic since there isn't a client for any other than Spotify on VMTV right now.

It is staggering how some slow to respond record companies finally get a grip on digital music, tout it as "the future of music" and promptly make a mess of monetizing it therefore making little to no money.

Down with downloading! :td: Bring back vinyl! :tu:

There were various claims made when CDs were launched about the price of recorded music coming down but in reality it went up. The original excuse was that a large proportion of the cost was the artists' royalties but in reality it was not. Maybe sometimes you are getting a few more tracks than you used to on a vinyl album but that varies.

I'm not sure how accurate this page is and I suspect that artists' fees are very variable but it has a couple of pie charts with a breakdown of roughly where the price of your CD goes.

I don't really do any music downloading although I have used the VM Music OD service but I guess that Spotify will be a very welcome service to many.
