Just seen one of the adverts.
It was the box being shown with a green thumbs up and information of a program that I did not see in time to realise.

Not bad, but could be better and show the interface :)

Getting extremely fed up with the lack of a dynamic EPG.
Recorded smackdown last night on sky sports 3, started an hour late, so I missed the last half hour as even having half an hour of padding apparently isn't enough might just start recording for 2 hours before and after, and on all the sky sports channels for the times it gets moved around without the EPG updating.

Downloaded it instead so I could actually watch the thing, got it in HD, and with no adverts and am starting to wonder just why exactly I bother paying for a far inferior product.

Is a dynamic EPG something that could come as a software update?

Theoretically.
But seeing as how the Tivo epg currently works, I'm not holding out much hope for it as it'd be a pretty major change.

Where has this myth that Tivo has dynamic EPG come from? IT DOESNT LOL.

No tivo box ever made has a dynamic epg. Its not going to happen the only dynamic epg in operation on this planet right now is running on Snowflake which sky will be rolling out soon.

Please point to someone saying Tivo has a dynamic EPG please. All I see is people complaining that it DOESN'T have one.

Well in that case well done on noticing Tivo the state of the art STB doesn't have a dynamic epg. By the way sky will late this year or early 2012.

So I achieved my goal, a £99 Tivo box doesn't have a dynamic epg, an neither does a free sky box.

You also need to look into the meaning of a straw man argument...I never attacked or refuted his original point.

Actually a Sky box does update epg dynamically. TIVO is a completely different offering and has many strengths.

Yes, you do...;)

A "straw man" argument is where one simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented, for instance, by stating at 16:36 in this thread

I never stated you had attacked or refuted his (whoever "his" is) point - your proposition was non-specific to any poster, but a "straw man" nonetheless.

Not sure what to do? Want to order Tivo (not got my email yet, but I pre-registered, so hopefully in the next few days.....) but I think maybe I should wait until they've got BBC red button working.
If I order (and pay) in April to get the £40 install waived, can I ask for an install date later in the year - at least after Wimbledon, which I always use the BBC red button service for?
I know I could just wait until July and get the 'baby tivo' for a reduced cost - but having read how Tivo works, I think that the 1TB hard drive will be necessary to store everything that it records via Wishlists/Suggestions?
Currently getting very fed up with the small capacity of the V+ as just about everything I record is HD and I keep having to delete things I would like to watch because the drive gets full up.
So difficult - wait or not? The other thing that is making me think perhaps I should wait is the number of posts on forums all over the place saying that people are having problems with the tivo. I believe September is the next proper firmware update to solve a lot of the issues?
I keep going round in circles - one minute I want Tivo NOW, and the next I'm thinking of waiting 'til the Autumn....... What do others think?:D
Cheers....

I posted the above post in early April. How stupid could I have been???? I should have waited - then I could have used the red button on my V+ for Wimbledon and then bought the Tivo at a far lower price than I was being given with their 'special offer'. It makes my blood boil that the price has been reduced only a matter of weeks after us so called loyal customers were hoodwinked into thinking we were getting a special deal.
Poor show, Virgin.

I've posted that a Depg has plus and minus points, and if one is implemented, we need the option to have it on or off, as you can do on Sky.

I had a cool Tivo moment last night, I had been on holiday for the last week or so so was catching up some recorded shows, I watched a episode of Smallville and during the break I saw a add for a new show called Sirens.

Now I don't use catch or OD that often but as soon as Smallville was finished I jumped into the EPG, I couldn't remember the name of the show but I could remember when it was advertised to be on, jumped back to the right day and played the show direct from the EPG. Very cool.

And I had not set a series link for the new Top Gear series but my suggestions folder had it and in HD, how can people not like suggestions?

I agree with you , you also have to remember that the advantage with TIVO is three tuners as opposed to two , I get round this by recording the repeat on some shows however this is a real plus for VM the fact you can record three at once. As you have also said wishlists are a unique feature as is the advanced search. For me VM need to have a massive push and really sell these advanced features , they now have the box pricing at a great point so a big push could reap benefits. I think a DVD illustrating the many advanced features sent to potential customers would be a good idea.

Take the quote in context please.
I wasn't saying that everyone is complaining that it doesn't have one. I was saying that the only time people mentioning a dynamic EPG is when they're stating it hasn't got one, not saying it has as the other poster implied people were claiming.

Google buying Hulu will have no bearing on TiVo or content in UK. Even right holders in the UK find it difficult to supply US content on the various free on demand services.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but is it possible to set TiVo to record suggestions in HD where possible? I'd prefer it to record films etc. in HD seeing as though I pay extra for it. Also, it seems really keen to record each Simpsons episode off C4 AD, which I find amusing

Stephen 04-07-2011 13:25

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

No, at the moment suggestions will record in SD.

It doesn't matter if they record of the AD channels. They are no different to the normal channels. Unless you manually select the AD track.

Yeah, I've noticed they're no different, just found it slightly bemusing that it would record so far up the EPG.
When you say "at the moment.." does that mean an update is possibly on the way?

Stephen 04-07-2011 13:35

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Its possible, however as they are only suggestions it will try to record in SD so it doesn't use up a lot of space on the HDD.

Ben B 04-07-2011 18:16

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

It has recorded a few suggestions of the HD channels for me, even if the show isn't in HD. It recorded The Simpsons as a suggestion off Channel 4 HD the other day when none of the Simpsons episodes on channel 4 are HD.

Anybody else heard about this? Sorry, on my iPhone, don't know how to create links, this came from Crave- an iPhone app:

If you recently bought a 1TB TiVo box and found you missed those spent notes that used to make your wallet fat, then here's some good news -- Virgin Media has decided to give you £50 back. And you didn't even have to ask for it. Great stuff.
Virgin Media has cut the price of its 1TB TiVo box from £149.95 to £99.95, apparently to celebrate its new TiVo ad campaign. We're not sure why an ad campaign warrants a reduction in price, but we're certainly not complaining.
If you've already bought one of the boxes for its original price, then you can expect to receive a £50 refund -- just give Virgin Media a call and ask: "Where's my monies at?"

And also just found this on VMs site! Woohoo! :)

Hi
*
As many of you will have seen, we have just launched the marketing campaign for Virgin Media TiVo.* As part of this campaign we've decided to lower the price for the 1TB box to £99.95.** We're conscious that the earliest buyers of this great product paid £149.95, which was an offer only available to existing Virgin Media XL TV customers at the time.
*
We want to ensure that those who bought TiVo early are not missing out on the more competitive price now available.* We're therefore pleased to say that we'll be crediting all those customers who bought the 1TB box at £149.95 with the £50 difference.* This will appear on your bill in the next two months.* We'll be emailing all these*customers shortly, to confirm this.
*
We hope that you'll continue to enjoy your TiVo experience, which we think is the best way to watch TV, ever!
*
Thanks for your support

How long before the TiVo settles in? Speed wise, it seems no better than my Samsung if not slower. I am assuming that is because it is downloading a load of info?

Also if I make a mistake when typing, where is the delete button? I press clear and it takes me all the way back to the home screen.

You can use channel up/down to page up/down in all menus/guides

You have to press 'record' in the EPG to bring up the menu on a programme and choose 'explore' to get info on it - counter-intuitive we know but it works until it's fixed

But as you know Ben the VM deal with TiVo includes feature parity so that means we get it. Seeing as that is a official TiVo universal app (iPad and iPhone) I find it difficult to believe that this isn't going to be the app we get, rebranded.

I don't think that the remote record app that'll be popping up on the iPhone shortly will be that one. It'll be a version of the Android app that has already been released

Remember the Virgin Media TiVo is different to the US TiVos. It connects to the internet differently, the authentication used for remote record is Virgin's not TiVo's etc.

The iPad app (and by extention the iPhone) will come to Virgin Media TiVo platform but not without changes to support the Virgin Media TiVo's differences

Yes I get that it's not identical in features but it's going to be built off the same codebase, by TiVo right?

[EDIT]Are you saying Ben that there is an iPhone app coming out soon?[/EDIT]

Yes - but as I said it'll be similar to the Android version that was released the other week. It's not going to be the TiVo iOS app

Minus those that have tested the TiVo, its been 'out' for just a few weeks so I wouldn't be expecting anything soon.

Right I think I get it after using the app.

This is the Virgin Media iPhone app with TiVo remote record and there will also be the Virgin Media Tivo app for iPad/iPhone.

Blackberry and other internet-enabled smartphone customers can continue to access our web-based EPG to set remote recordings at http://m.virginmedia.com/tvguide

That's a no by the looks of it.

am I missing something? I don't see any of the movie channels available to record from - it's giving me M, L, XL and custom (I'm VIP with all movie channels) but I dont see the option for any movie chanels on there?

I suppose it's not a big deal, but just wondering if I'm missing something - definitely looks to be working though as just tried a remote record and says it's set.

BlackBerry (as a company) is going down the pan and next to nobody is developing for it any more. Plus active (eg. growing) platforms like webOS and Windows Phone aren't getting apps so Virgin still have multiple platforms to build for.

Blackberry are not going down the pan as they are on the up. They have stated that they are looking for a tie up with Android App store (trying to find the link)? They have just released the Playbook as well?

Hands on... Virgin Media TiVo
Grant Gibson
15 Jul 2011

Virgin Media TiVo from £49 plus subscription

Digital video recording specialist TiVo entered the UK market in 2000, a year after its pioneering disk-based TV recorder launched in the United States. Too small to commit to a full UK operation, the fledgling business partnered with BSkyB to bring its cutting-edge product to our shores.

However, BSkyB was just months away from launching its rival Sky+ system. To say that Sky’s heart wasn’t in the partnership is an understatement. Initial sales were poor and TiVo pulled out of the UK market soon after Sky+ launched.

Sky’s stalling tactic, though shrewd at the time, may come back to haunt it. Now partnered with Sky rival Virgin Media, TiVo is back in the UK. And after a fortnight of testing I think it could be a Sky+ killer.

At the heart of TiVo is its seven-day TV guide. From there you can schedule recordings, record an entire series, or even set up recordings based on a specific actor’s or director’s name. If you want to build a complete collection of Woody Allen movies, this is a great way to do it.

The TV guide is also available online, so you can schedule recordings over your lunch break or via your mobile phone.

Another noteworthy feature is called Suggestions. Giving a thumbs up to programmes you like and thumbs down to the rest, TiVo builds a picture of your tastes and records other programmes it thinks you might like. Virgin’s TiVo has three tuners, so it’s possible to record two programmes while watching a third live programme or, for real TV junkies, record three programmes while watching a recorded show.

Up to 500 hours of TV can be recorded on the range-topping 1TB box although this drops to 100 hours for high-definition recordings.

On-demand programming, such as that from STV and Channel 4, is neatly integrated into the TV guide, so if you’ve missed a programme you can go back and select it from the schedule rather than resorting to a separate menu.

A separate apps menu hosts YouTube and BBC iPlayer (which, somewhat frustratingly, isn’t included alongside the other on-demand channels) plus a range of other interactive features such as weather forecasts.

Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely. No other system – from Sky to BT Vision, Freeview to Freesat – offers such a complete mix of live, recorded, on-demand and premium content from a single box.

Virgin Media TiVo from £49 plus subscription
Stars: 5/5

Positives: Powerful multi-channel recording paired with unmatched on-demand services.
Negatives: Only available in areas with Virgin Media cabling.

You're joking right?
They're losing market share everywhere.

Them getting android apps running on their devices is a mark of desperation.
They dropped from near 20% to 16% of the market in a year, whereas android jumped from 4% to over 22%. Blackberry is a sinking ship and both the playbook and attempt to run android apps natively are attempts to plug the holes.

There is no definition of "on the up" that covers blackberry, unless you're standing on your head.

Can any TiVo users confirm how quick the EPG updates when there's a last-minute change to the schedule as the old V+HD EPG takes an age to update and sometimes it doesn't update at all.

Getting it right would be nice,Shouldn`t have to check stuff programmed in correctly everyday,The V+ is certainly more reliable.Feel for the peeps paying £3 for this.Hopefully they will get this sorted and its a short term problem

I received mine yesterday (500gb) and love it.

Extra space for HD recordings is great, love the new tv guide, managed to work out series link recording....this is going to be something as features continue to grow. I think the picture quality is great.

Well done Virgin....I received it 2 days after I ordered it and installed in less than half an hour.

Even renogoatiated my contract and the box will pay for itself in 4 months with no reduction in services.

Also use the app to record and that is very useful

The main features are suggestions which though a intuitive system you can rate programmes which you watch with a hand up or down system also there are wish lists and search list and also there is a far superior EPG guide in which you can go back 7 days for catch up on demand also there are several apps which will be added to in the near future by quite a bit including Spotify and ther areseveral other features which l suspect you like like, anyway good luck with your install.
