Blackbelt TV, at present a niche cable channel in the US on martial arts - films and matches etc, looks set to launch on Real Digital.

As their original broadcast outlet was originally cable, and with a satellite feed becoming available, I wonder if this could be the test and/or if VM will be taking it?

The channel is aimed at Black Belt and Martial Arts instructors, fans and participants.

In my eyes, Virgin should have puched harder when they were in the process of selling their tv channels to sky

the very least they could have also gained (along with what they actually gained) Sky Sports News HD, Sky Sports HD3/4 and Sky News HD

But they gained many things and that included access to Sky's premium HD channels, Sky's Anytime OD service and the red button so all in all l don't think that was a bad deal do you.

That was never going to happen, Sky will not give any of those until Ofcom forces them to, VM did as well as they did in my view and we have access to all of those channels be in in SD only.

These channels were not broadcasting when the deal was signed. Sky Sports is a seperate deal as it's premium content.

Virgin Media to kick Current TV off Virgin TV in 2012?

Media Web site ''C21'' is reporting that Virgin Media will kick Current TV off its cable TV platform next year, as part of a comprehensive review of its content and services.

More as I get it...

Virgin Media will kick Current TV off its cable TV platform next year, as part of a comprehensive review of its content and services.

The UK pay-TV platform has already served notice to the documentary broadcaster, which launched on Virgin in early 2007, C21 has learned. It is currently part of Virgin’s M+, L and XL channel packages.

The move will mean that from the first quarter of 2012 the channel will no longer be available to Virgin Media subscribers, leaving it only on Sky, where it is part of the satellite TV provider’s style and culture pack.

The decision to drop the channel is part of an ongoing evaluation by Virgin of its channel line-up, following the launch of its Virgin TiVo service at the end of 2010.

The cable TV provider is understood to be focusing on securing multi-screen rights rather than hosting only linear channels, in a bid to get the most value from the content on its platform.

Virgin is aiming to provide customers with content “anywhere and everywhere” and is now evaluating all of its content provider relationships with a view to securing multi-screen rights, a source told C21.

The move is part of a shift in the way Virgin delivers content, with the TiVo service already acting as a programme recorder and an on-demand service, as well as giving access to web content such as YouTube.
https://dev.c21media.net/archives/57659

Do this mean they will be reneogating all of there contracts with the content providers ?

If that is the case we could see a lot more HD channels in any new deals with content providers and this would also mean Virgin Media live tv on ipad , i phone etc.

I can't say i've ever watched it either, perhaps many people haven't, so VM want to dump it. Can VM collate data on their customers' viewing habits, individually or anonymously?

That's a reasonable possibility, especially as ITV have asked for permission to use VM technology to insert adverts into their VM version of ITV Player.

Perhaps, VM didn't want to pay extra for the HD variants, but will be obtaining income from the extra ad sales and use of VM technology at no charge as a return for their pay HD channels instead ;)

Today is the 15th, they may have decided to prefer to launch them all together and Tue/Wed night is a usual night for adding channels...

I'm sure that on demand content from Current TV was available once upon a time?

So if this is a new strategy then one gets the feeling that a lot of channel may well be removed from Virgin Media and I don't suddenly see lots of new channels appearing to take their place. After all, there are still plenty of people like me who just like to flick through the channels to see what's on and who don't have the desire to have to be connected "anywhere and everywhere" and if lots of channels start to disappear then VM will loose customers to Sky.

The story that C21 is talking about may not happen due to the following:

C21 Says
-''Current TV is broadcasting on M+, L and XL'' But it only broadcast on the XL Package.
-And posted ''Sky, where it is part of the satellite TV provider’s style and culture pack.'' it not as Sky have done away with that package it now on Entermainment Extra Pack (I think).

According to Barb Current TV only gets about 126,000 viewers per day. I don't think it would be too difficult for Virgin to justify binning this.

I'd much rather see Virgin getting rid of niche, minority, unpopular channels and use the money saved to invest in new content and channels people will actually watch. No offence to anyone who enjoys Current TV.

Like any business you'd be crazy to continue stocking goods people don't want. It makes sense to monitor how much demand there is. If demand is little you stop carrying the goods and replace it with a better product.

i think 126,000 is a good number of viewers for a channel that is only on sky and virgin media, also the channel does not advertise as well

if we had more so called "minority channels" then it is more likely the more people will move from sky to virgin media because they will not lose much in terms of content

You could end up with a bland selection of "popular" channels.. the beauty of multi-channel tv is it's just that, multi-channel. Niche channels are absorbed in to the tv packs pricing to give more choice.

Got a email from Virgin Media's peter chapman about the 80 HD channels target.

This below was the email i sent to Peter Chapman

Quote:
Dear Peter

I know Virgin Media have a path to have 80 HD channel in 2 years.

Dec. 02. 2010 / 9:30AM, VMED - Virgin Media Inc. Analyst and Investors Day (London)
It is separate from the broadcast connectivity that we have where effectively we are providing 300 standard definition channels, 30 HD channels at the moment, but with a path to grow to 80 HD channels over the next two years, or three years.
page 10
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External...xUeXBlPTM=&t=1

How do you plan to do this ? At the moment Virgin Media have 36 HD channels so you will add 40+ HD channels in the next 2 years ? Are you sure that is a realistic target ?

This below was the reply

Quote:
Hi

Pleased that you keep up with corporate communications. As Neil stated, our goal is to provide the very best in entertainment, including adding top quality HD channels that we know customers want to watch. We're currently on track to deliver on our ambitions but as I'm sure you're aware, they are still very much dependent on the negotiations we're able to conclude with various content providers.

Kind regards
Peter

Peter Chapman

He says they are on track to deliver that. Could we see lots of HD channels early next year ?

He also says "negotiations we're able to conclude with various content providers" What does conclude mean ?

At least Virgin Media now know we want top quality HD channels ie ESPN America HD, ITV 2,3,4 HD etc.

Alan can you post this please.

Yes but targets can't always be met , Cindy Rose claimed there would be hundreds of apps on TIVO within a year , which for whatever reason hasn't materialised. Contracts are complex things.

There are 61 HD Channels on SKY (38 on Virgin Media)

Plus More4 HD, TCM HD, Alibi HD and Racing UK HD Launching over the next few years

Looks like Boxnation will be launching either on the 30th of November / 01st of December just in time for Cotto Vs. Margarito II. This page on their website was just updated today.

http://www.boxnation.tv/subscribe.php

"By registering now, you’re not committing to anything. You will simply receive news from BoxNation and information on how to subscribe to the channel ahead of the subscription service’s launch on the first of December.

Sky customers will soon be able to subscribe and pay for the channel through this site, while Virgin Media customers should contact Virgin directly (we expect to be live on Virgin Media cable within two weeks)."

Cool MB.

A quick question for a Virgin insider.

Seeing Boxnation are claiming you have to contact Virgin to subscribe, how far ahead of the channel launching would employees in the relevant department receive their training and info to help them field the calls?

Depends on when the agreement is finalised I think. For some channel launches there has been some notification, for others it's the day of launch

As adding new channels that require a subscription isn't anything new - I would guess that an hour or two would be plenty of time for CS to be prepared.

Had my letter from VM today advising the TIVO update is going ahead. Message will be found in Help & Settings and as per the post by Media Boy about rollout by area will happen between the 17th and the 24th.

Also posted on here I believe before someone says anything

Anybody else had the letter or is mine just late?

Time for the update is approx 2am and will take about an hour

Apologies if members already know this

No, reason why 2am except there are bound to be some people watching at that time but they have to do it some time.

Do NOT turn off box while update is proceeding, it will wipe all your recordings and settings so just leave it to update when it happens.

Letter does not mention Sky Sports red button specifically, it does mention iplayer HD on YouTube but it does add "And much, much more."

Whatever that means.

Was it a given that the SS red button would be available for TIVO with this update?

I'm also hoping the ID channel will eventually be shown on VM sooner rather than later.

What I have noticed is quite a lot of the ID programmes are being shown on VM's lifestyle channel Discovery RT.
Hopefully a sign of things to come?

Programmes such as =

On the Case with Paula Zahn
I (Almost) got away with it
True Crime With Aphrodite Jones
Who the (Hell) Did I Marry
Couples Who Kill
48 Hours
The Real NCIS
The Will
I Married A Mobster(which is on tonight btw)
etc etc.

The above programmes/shows are just a few of what the ID channel has to offer and for a crime show fan like myself I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that eventually it will be shown on VM.

That Channel may launch if Discovery ask Virgin Media to drop Discovery Real Time +1 but Discovery are not doing this so you will need to wait until Discovery deal is up with Virgin Media.

when will History HD (lauched in 2006), Bio HD (launched in 2008) and Crime & Investigation Network Hd (launched in 2008) launch on virgin media, it has been a few years since they were launched on sky (i know sky jointly owns those channels)

Thee was a rumour sometime ago about a couple of years i think that History HD was launching on VM since then nothing,i had presumed that the carriage deal that was offered (if any)was too much.

The other two HD channels Bio so far as i know has never been metioned in negitiation talks,Crime and nvestigation was rumoured some time ago but again nothng came of it,can only imagine its down to cost v viewing figures for said channels.

Yes thanks noel43 I've got The First 48hrs on record from the start last week via the series link. There's also the CBS reality channel that shows a few crime programmes such as = Unsolved Mysteries - Medical Detectives - 48 Hours: Hard Evidence - Forensic Investigators and 48 Hours Mystery that I watch. But I'd still welcome the Investigation Discovery channel because I'm a big fan of crime programmes/shows. I know there's plenty to watch with what I've mentioned above and also the C+I channel but that's what the TiVo's and V+Boxes are for.
