No.. it's to do with changing the National head-end to just Langley. So if we can't get the radio station from a satellite feed then we can't carry it.

So any local radio station will have to be dropped.

I think that will mean BBC Radio 4 LW (on Channel 911) and your local BBC Radio Channel (From Channel 937) may also appear.

Any news for us? :dozey: (i'm guessing no as its a joint Sky MGM venture.)

Things do seem to have gone very quite concerning the 20 to 30 HD channels coming in the summer that MB was telling us about.
It would just be nice if every once in a while VM were to let their customers know their intentions, I don't expect a date but surly something along the lines of "VM will be greatly increasing its HD content this year, we hope to be adding between 20 to 30 new HD channels...watch this space".
At least that way we'd have some idea of what is in the pipeline, instead of the fiasco over the last two years concerning HD channels...sadly I doubt very much VM will change their habit of keeping its customers securely in the dark.

Ive had lengthy phone discussions about this recently after they put picture box on but told the media first and customer some time after.
They are, sadly, in complete denial that a problem even exists quoting confidentiality preventing them telling customers and also that a big campaign was in the pipeline.
They just dont realise if they can tell the media via press announcements then they must surely be able to tell customers at the same time.
Doesnt have to be anything fancy, a simple email to those customers who have email would suffice.
Ive lost count of the times ive told my sister about new things before she was told by virgin.
I am a virgin fan and i find the attitude bewildering and a bit sad.

Exactly, it's what me and others, including frog, have been saying all along. We're not VM bashers we just want to be kept far more informed by this company...

After all, VM/cable has the capability of blowing Sky's out of the water when it comes to what it COULD achieve...but unless they are willing to let us know what the F is going on who where and why it all becomes a bit of a fiasco.

Ok lets play it by your game, if virign had cam eout and said they wher enegetion with espn to get hd and ther eotehr channels and make htem part of the xl pack before sky had signed them up properly do you not thik sky owuld have not have tried to get deal so it was with sky sports? it all coems down to comerical sense which is keep quit tehn surpirse everyone or oyu could do what sky does and annouce it then allow other to get oen ver you

But i agree with wha toyur sayign cusotmer should be told more than they are but you are looking to know what there doign befor econtracts are signed which isnt good business sense

Maybe what virign should do is makea page on there site that lsit channesl coming soon and what epg numebr ie once there confimred with contrats and onyl test shave to be done then ther eon that page with a launch date and epg number and the same goes for channels confirmed to be leaving so we know when there leaving

It's not about playing games, Andrew. It's about infomation. It would make perfect "buisness sense" to let us know what they are hoping to acgieve and when they are hoping to achieve it.

I for one have had enough with spurious comments of "Hd in the 1st quarter" oh no "Hd by July" , hang on make that "Hd by November".

I'm sorry Digital Fantastic but a page on a website isn't good enough. How about having press releases with our bills every month or better advertising on telly.

My Dad had no idea we had more HD channels until i told him becuase they didn't bother to advertise it properly.

VM's HD department should allbe given a kick up the arse as well as their advertising people.

Can't fault customer service or their tech guys... they are always brilliant!

What i doubt is the VM HD branch who do not, in my opinion, make enough effort to keep us informed and stick to timetables they themselves set.

This is great for those who know about virgin press releases but many customers wouldnt have a clue where to find a virgin press release.
I know because its common knowledge on forums but many customers dont visit forums and so would have no way of knowing.
(But would of course be interested in anything new happening)

What about the electric magazine? I receive it by email and sometimes by post. I was sure they advertised changes and coming soon news. In particular when the HD channels were added I recall reading about them even though I already knew. Do we all get the magazine or is it only for certain packages? that a mag subscription is included.

It was also in full page spreads in national newspapers, as well as inserts in magazines.

I dunno when people will feel they're done enough, but they didn't exactly keep quiet about it.

The only problem with the advertising your talking about, is that it occurred just days before and also after release of said HD channels, thats hardly keeping us informed over the previous year.

BenMcr 17-12-2009 10:46

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

What were they supposed to do? Run full page press ads going 'we might be getting some HD at some point in the future but we aren't sure when'? What would be the point of that?

As with any contract negotiation it's not agreed until it's agreed, so VM can't announce anything until it is.

Sadly I don't think any public company is going to tell you what they are planing to do, and certainly aren't going to talk about deals and contracts that are currently under negotiation.

I haven't a clue but do Sky divulge their upcoming contracts?

And what happens if some (or all) of the deals they are negotiating to get the HD content fall though? They could be done for false advertising.

They should advertise the existing HD channels more effectively, but they can't advertise what is coming up because it may not happen. Also, it lets the competition know exactly what they are planning (which is never a good idea). When did Sky advertise what channels they *might* be getting?

jonbxx 17-12-2009 11:25

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I would imagine that if there were ongoing negotiations with Sky for HD, the last thing Sky would want is publicity about it. Sky will want to convert as many Sky+ and VM users to HD as they can before selling the crown jewels.

If I was in Skys shoes, I would provisionally agree to sell HD channels to VM but ONLY when the Sky+HD box sales growth had at least plateaued. The fact that they are giving the Sky+HD box away for free now suggests that they have now sold to all the early adopters and now are going for the Sky+ box owners. I would wait until the World Cup was over and then open up the channels.

(I know that World Cup games will be in HD on VM, well at least the BBC ones but let's face it, Sky are the de facto HD provider in the UK)

The difference is that Sky don't need to advertise what upcoming channels they hope to get, SD or HD, their actions speak louder than any words...we all know that Sky will be at the forefront of any new channels that come to the UK market.
Now if VM were to be more aggressive in introducing new channels we wouldn't rely so heavily on the pitiful snippets released to us, eg Daystar TV, Wedding TV and many more that are "still" coming soon.

I was just sharing news that Picture Box movies will be free for two days.
This is FREE to all Virgin Customers, ie at no extra charge.

Could be that Arthur tried to view "free" picturebox through the menu instead of pressing the red button on channel 118.:)
Its always good to get a freebie, shame it doesn't include picturebox's HD films though.

Virgin would rather we found out about good things via forums and word of mouth than bothering to actually tell customers directly.
Try speaking to them and they will say its all to do with confidentiality or some such "reason".
You only have to watch thier press releases and see the time between them and actually telling thier customers to see thier novel approach to customer service.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I am all in favour of "freebies" but I already pay for picture box. Now before you think this is a moan about me having to pay for something when others can get it for free - I really dont mind, I understand the commercial sense of making it free for a while to entice new viewers to subscribe, good for us all in the long run.

No my whinge is that I have tried a few times today to access picturebox (which I am paying for) and all I get is a message that says that VM are experiencing unusualy high traffic in my area and to try later (or something similar). Now I can only put this down to lots of "free" users trying to access the service. So not only am I not able to access the service having paid for it because free users are accessing it, it would strike me that if the purpose of offering the service free is to entice people to sign up then loads of people will be thinking "this is a bit rubbish - I cant even access the films".

And after all that I AM a bit miffed that I cant access something I am paying for because VM have decided to offer it free.... there I have said it, I AM the grinch that stole christmas !!!
