So it seems we're definatly on for more HD channels in 2010

Do our very reliable sources (you know who you are ;) :p ) have any ideas on when and what?

I don't know anything for certain, but if you look at what's available, Sky channels excepted, there are only really a handful up for grabs; History, Bio, SciFi, ITV1, British Eurosport, Discovery, Disney Cinemagic, CI, Nat Geo Wild and Rush TV.

The only one Virgin has actually mentioned to my knowledge was a possible Good Food HD channel but one would hope that ITV1 HD won't be too long in escaping from its Freesat chains.

No new channels are testing on Virgin right now.

I think this month will see Virgin adding BBC Radio 4 LW and some local BBC Radio Channels to Ex-ntl and Ex-C&W areas. With the local BBC Radio Channels being move to Virgin Channel 937+ so that BBC Radio from Scotland, Wales and Ireland can appear on Virgin Channel 930 on the Ex-Telewest side before Virgin Media stop adding / removing channels on their EPG over Christmas and new year holidays.

Although no new channels are currently testing, I think you believe that Zone Horror will be replaced with a new CBS branded channel before January (quite probably CBS Drama, I would imagine). Is this still the case?

Virgin Media take Telewest ''Heart'' out.

An Ex-Telewest viewer has email me over the weekend with the following:

Quote:

Hi Media Boy,

Not sure if you are already aware of this but I've just noticed that Heart Essex on 933 (was labeled Essex) and Heart Kent on 963 (was labeled Invicta) are no longer broadcasting in my area (Essex Ex-TW SS1). They were definately still on last month when I last checked but now the channel numbers are gone completely.

I have no news on the date for the Zone Horror rebranded yet. CBS Drama will join Virgin when CBS/Zone Media sign an new deal with Virgin.

NOTE: Zone Horror will not be replaced by CBS Drama it will be replaced by CBS Movies or CBS Horror.

Yes virgin have every right to remove a channel (assuming it dosnt make any material difference to the value of your package), just like Arthurgray50@blu has every right to get annoyed when a channel he watches gets removed :)

So I was thinking maybe Virgin Media has move all the local BBC Radio Channels to Channel 937.

And Virgin have added an ''This Channel has move'' sign.

From - Channel name - broadcast area - New EPG Channel.
930 - BBC London - Croydon, Haringey and Hayes - To Channel 937.
930 - BBC Radio Lancashire - Preston - To Channel 937.
930 - BBC Radio Merseyside - Knowsley - To Channel 937.

It's a shame VM can't bring us E4HD on launch. AFAIK they do have free bandwidth to let us have the channel.

It's a FTA channel right?! So why such delay?!

I very much hope 2010 brings us more HD...especially for me, Eurosport.

I'm not holding out any hope of any Sky HD as OFCOM is being scrapped when the Tories get in so nothing they say will be binding.... but SKY aside there are still plenty of decent HD channels out there...

I hop it will be either a drip drip add every so often or a MASSIVE HD addition earleir on in 2010 and we wont have to wait until June/July for one more!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

I wouldn't worry too much about the curbing of OFCOM they have been quite toothless over so many things, even if they do have their powers reduced there is still the office of fair trading and competitions commission. Of course the whole process will need to be started again.

If it's not Sky showering them with cash then lets be honest. With their track record it's far more likely VM said "no thanks" to E4HD for some reason.

I bet a £ to a penny that VM turned it down rather than Channel 4 not offering it. :td:

Give them a chance to sort out the contracts and add new channels in their own time, after all they have already given you more HD channels on their service than ever before.

lets face it though it was not hard for VM to actually add more HD channels than ever before considering it only ever had 1 full HD channel in the first place. all VM needed to do was add 1 more channel and that would of been a 100% increase in HD channels.

seriously though more HD on VM is needed especially with Sky offering their HD box for free. even a trickle of one channel here and there would be nice things like eurosport HD, ITV HD, discovery HD, History HD would be more than welcome and should be pretty easy to add especially as all the channel owners are all laying blame with VM inability to sort things out rather than the fact that the channel owners are unwilling or tied to exclusive deals.

You do realise to get the box for 'free' you have to sign up to Sky Movies and the HD pack for 12 months?

So you are looking at minimum cost of £37 a month and you still have to pay £30 to get it installed

I'm content with VM.

Picture box is good value with the HD films shown for a fiver a month, some of them classics and movis on Channel 4 HD. Got ESPN for HD footie.

I still look to this thread though every week to see if there is any breaking news on additional HD channels, which would be great only if the content of additional channels are worth watching. Some of the HD Channels on SKY are a waste of time.

Probably basing it on Cables track record. The chances are quite high that it won't be on VM rather then it will.

I agree it doubt it iwll be on launch but i think it will be by before the end of next year, and i petty sure we will see a big channel increase middle of next year once analogue is gone and once narga 3 is fully implentmented

I don't believe its that easy for VM to add an extra HD channel just like that.
Unless they have spare HD capacity they have to add the equipment required to carry it and test it across the whole network

Or they could be planning to ad E4HD at the same time as ITVHD when the latter is freed from its current Freesat shackles

On MB's first post there are all those region BBC and ITV channels that are not live. Are they so that we will be able to see all regions or just for testing before combining them into capacity for new HD channels (like they did with showing Sky channels on the 30 new channels they added to the bandwidth before we got increased HD)

Edit: Having all the BBC and ITV regions available to everyone would be pretty wasteful of bandwidth considering how little difference there is between the regions apart from local news

My main point, i guess, is that AGAIN VM don't keep us fully informed. If they have the fullest of intentions of adding EDHD then why not tell us? Why not say "Look we hope to have E4HD on our platform in 2010 but at the minute we are trying to free up badwidth."

But we're always kept in the dark!

BenMcr 10-12-2009 10:25

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

If Virgin did turn round tomorrow and say what you want them to say, there would then be a thread started on 1st Jan 2010 going 'Well VM said E4HD would be here in 2010, it's now 2010 so where is it'. This thread would then continue with people getting more and more frustrated until it finally appeared, and then it would turn into 'is that it?'

VM's default channel policy applies - which is that they always review their channel line up and will add channels if they bring value to the platform and when they reach a commercial agreement with the broadcaster.

Mobes 10-12-2009 10:47

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Ben, for me personally i would like to be kept informed! Even if they said

"Dont worry, we are not ignoring the fact more and more HD channels are appearing and we plan to add this to our service at the 1st possible opportunity."

Simple. The fact NOTHING is said depsite Channel 4 wanting E4HD to be on multi platforms.

It makes this part of VM look second best when we all know what ability the platform has.

BTW i'll say it once more... i love VM...their service and indeed customer service is brilliant IMO... but this one department, HD, looks second class.

They may want it to be, but they don't seem particularly concerned.

For instance, why isn't E4HD launching on Freesat at exactly the same time as Sky? It's carried on the same satellite so it wouldn't take up any more space, just an EPG pointer. Why isn't C4HD already on Freesat?

Without wanting to sound obnoxious (some may say i've already failed) i couldn't care less about freesat because i don't have it so i don't get your point.

This is really just another minor annoyance amongst the whole raft of VM HD annoyances. They've not helped their own cause by keeping quiet and hopeing we don't read SKY or Chnl4 press announcments.

My point is that if C4 were REALLY concerned about getting E4HD multi-platform then it would be launching on Freesat at the same as Sky. As it's not, that says to me there is something else going on.

And in those press releases it's made quite clear it's going to be on Sky only, so what can VM add apart from 'No we've not got it'?

---------- Post added at 10:07 ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 ----------

I would expect that any HD content from E4HD is likely to turn up in the 4OD section on VM TV (if it's not there already), so it's not like you will miss out on any of the content either

I sent an email to sky by mistake which should have been for ch4 instead but got a reply from skys department which deals with new channels and his reply was contact ch 4 direct to ask if it was coming to freesat or virgin.I know it wont appear on freesat due to being no space at the moment. Also in sky press realease it said multi year deal and not exclusive so it could come to virgin sooner rather than later.

There's plenty of space on freesat.

The only thing that stops channels launching on freesat is they firstly need to be broadcast free to air, and secondly have to pay for a freesat EPG slot.

I'd be willing to bet that the reason it's not launching on freesat is that sky have insisted it's broadcast encrypted, something they often do in return for subsidised (or even free) epg slots.

Ok, let's get two things absolutely clear.

1. This thread is for discussing things that have been announced as possibly or definitely coming to Virgin Media's TV service. extended discussions of Legal or regulatory rulings do not fall within that remit, regardless of how they might affect those things which we are told may be / are coming soon;
2. Continuing to debate whether or not previous moderating decisions were correct, or whether or not the moderating stance generally with regards to this thread is correct, will result in posts being removed and individuals infracted.

If you don't like, or don't feel you can post within, either of those points, then don't post in this thread.

Raistlin 13-12-2009 19:06

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

To add to what I've said above. I have no intention of retrospectively Moderating this thread - needless to say though, the recent spate of argumentative and extremely off-topic posts have attracted my attention and future off-topic posts will be dealt with.

They seem to have an annoying system, whereby once the the first lot of episodes are removed from the service (it should say how many days they have left on there), the remaining ones are added. They did this with Chuck Season 1, much to my annoyance.
