Does that mean that in the future it might be possible for me to use my Virgin Mobile BlackBerry to control my Tivo when I'm away from home? Or even to tell Tivo to record a certain show?

STB's will be controlled by companion apps more and more over the coming years , TIVO in the US already has the excellent IPad app which allows access to my shows , setting recordings actor/director searches , social media plus much more. Sky are also developing a similar companion app allowing you to control your box , view your planner , I personally would rather do all these functions on a companion device as it allows you to continue watching the TV without having to bring menus up.

IMO that is the way forward. I have used many PVRs over the last couple of years and one thing that Sky+HD does very well is record. I know on here people will say that Sky+HD is inferior but the fact is that it is very simple to use and probably has the best EPG available to any PVR making recordings very reliable. Using companion apps would mean it stays as simple as you want but also you can use apps for advanced features.

This is great, but for me, and I suspect many others, we want a PVR, with good functionality, that is manufacturer implemented. That way, we have someone to contact/complain to, if that functionality doesn't work properly.

That is an issue. His bundle comes with a disclaimer to warn the user of this.

It would appear both VM TIVO and Sky are certainly wanting to go down the companion app route , VM have already announced the app for iPad , and Sky's companion app is already rumoured to be in development.

You can do that already through VM's TV Guide website. There is a version for mobile devices. I just don't know the URL :)

It's my birthday next week and I have a wishlist, but itshim is right, it's use in a pvr is where it becomes problematic.

It isn't in the UK. "Universal wishlist" is a trademark of Amazon, and "The Wish List" is a trademark of Gallowgate Rights Limited. But no one has plain WishList.

The TVguide.co.uk iPhone/iPad app lets you set recordings and change channels on your tivo.

Useful!
