afaik, there is nothing you can do to speed up recovery. There are many claims of products/suppliments etc. that help in that way but I'm not aware of anything that really helps other than good nutrition, rest and time
Even the evidence for ice baths for DOMS is debatable and sketchy. I am in a more or less permanent state of muscle pain which I (obviously) enjoy :)

They are cheap. :D

Well if you need a massage anytime... ;)

Haribos + protein shake then a clean meal.

the Haribos in relation to this...

DEXTROSE THE BEST POST-WORKOUT CARB SOURCE

Consuming pure glucose—also called dextrose—after a workout means the body doesn't need to digest it. Because post-workout glucose can be absorbed into the bloodstream almost as quickly as it's ingested, it gets to your spent muscles as rapidly as possible, resulting in the quickest and most complete replenishment of muscle glycogen. This will keep muscles stocked with ample glycogen for your next workout and pull water into your muscle cells, maximizing your muscle size.

I didn't fully understand exactly what the Dextrose stuff is about

Quote:

Why Dextrose?

A common question here is "Why the use of Dextrose?" Some are worried, as previously mentioned, about the calorie issue. The fact is that the body is going to destroy those calories to fuel the muscles post-workout. Dextrose is used because it has a high glycemic index. When you utilize dextrose in your post-workout shake you're going to get a heavy insulin spike.

That insulin spike is what you want because it creates a chemical stir in the brain. A trigger occurs that shifts the way the body processes the nutrients. Because your muscles take the frontline over fat stores due to their depleted energy stores, the nutrients you take in - including the carbs like Dextrose - head straight for the muscles to be used. This is essential to getting your muscles into a state where they start the healing process quickly.

Certain sugars (carbs) are used in your body to restore muscle glycogen and are better suited for that. Others are not. Dextrose is noted to be a perfect source for restoring those glycogen stores as it has the high glycemic index and it's quickly digested. Other carbs like apple juice, which contain mainly fructose, don't restore muscle glycogen. Instead it fills the liver glycogen stores, offering no benefit to your muscles at all.

theres a fair bit more on that page. am I right in believing the sweets/dextrose will help the muscles absorb all required nutrition?

I'll ask my other half as she's the nutritionist in the family but I would be a bit leery of regularly inducing an insulin spike with neat sugars as that's a great way to set yourself on the road to diabetes.:D

The cheapest and easiest recovery after cardio is chocolate (low fat) milk.

That's what Mandy just said. It's got lactose which is a relatively slow releasing carb along with protein. Shame I'm dairy intolerant :dozey:

If anyone is interested in getting better at chin ups try Recon Ron Pullup Program
I use it with a very wide grip and don't cheat-all the way down and all the way up.
I'm on week 9 atm but I usually stay on each 'week' of that program for 2-4 weeks before moving up to the next one.

Thank you I got a bottle after a 7-8k jog/run on the treadmill today. I done a little ab workout too. my bum cheeks hurt today, or glutes. Walking lunges the culprit. Stretching as far as I could triggered them :woot::D

Might be an idea to get yourself one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roller-Pilat...ge+foam+roller

Excellent way of dealing with muscular aches and pains and really good for stretching too.

That's a very good price but this one is more versatile as it's longer so can be used for core training as well :)

I've tried a roller at TheGym a few times but not for aches as such. More core training and lower back stretching. I have to this day felt a big difference in my lower back after using the roller. The empty feeling I had in my lower back was shockingly cold.

Oh well no chance to redeem myself in London next year as unsuccessful in the ballot (again)

Onto another plan that might involve 53 miles of the West Highland way in about 12 hours instead.

Re: Who Is Getting Fit This Year?

Gulp. That's the highland fling entered. Milngavie to Tyndrum, 53 miles, 2300 meters of ascent. :Yikes:

I've now got to run more of the West Highland way than I've ever managed to walk before and have 6 months to prepare. At least the training runs will be very scenic as I'll be running past some decent pubs and B&Bs.
