Yes and no.... BBC HD currently shows BBC3 and 4 stuff in HD too. Once it changes to BBC2 HD, then it will be a simulcast of BBC2 England in HD.

Virgin Media will no doubt have 45+ HD channels or even more by the time this "supposely new HD channel from the BBC" launches Which will likely be late 2012.

Sorry, but this is completely wrong..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_HD

On 6 October 2011 following the BBC's Delivering Quality First review, it was proposed that BBC HD will be closed and replaced with a single high definition version of BBC Two in 2012, as part of cost-cutting plans. The cuts won't be implemented until after a consultation by the BBC Trust, which runs until 21 December 2011.

So....how many HD channels will the BBC have in any 1 region?

BBC 1 HD, BBC 2 HD, and.......?

Can anyone provide a list beyond those BBC HD channels? (And no, I don't mean regional variations) And where in that Wiki article does it state there's going to be more than 1 BBC HD channel? Not that Wiki should be trusted anyway.

Two Beebs or not two Beebs? That is the question.

My understanding of the situation is ...

  • BBC HD is to close. It was a compendium of HD content from other BBC channels but never a simulcast of any one BBC channel. It was a stop-gap measure until HD versions of the primary channels could be accommodated and launched on all platforms.
  • BBC Two HD is to launch as a HD simulcast of BBC Two. It is therefore a new channel but with the same content as its SD counterpart (apart from regional variations on some platforms) just as is the case with BBC One.
  • Some of the original programming on BBC One and BBC Two is to be replaced by content from other BBC channels. This will apply to both the SD and HD versions of BBC One and BBC Two.
  • BBC Two HD is not simply a renaming of BBC HD as the content will differ significantly from that of BBC HD but be the same as that of BBC Two SD.

Premier Sports coming soon?

Someone on the Premier sports Facebook page has posted a copy of the following reply they received from Virgin in regards to Premier Sports launching.

"Many thanks for your e-mail.

I am responsible for the content proposition for sports and Premium channel offerings at Virgin Media. I appreciate hearing your views on Premier Sports and your interest in having this channel available on Virgin Media. I agree with you in that Premier Sports provides some great coverage of live sporting events and it is evolving into an impressive channel, I am pleased to say that we are in fairly advanced negotiations with Premier Sports and we really hope to launch this channel in the coming months, I’m afraid I don’t have a set date at the moment but if you keep an eye on our website we will keep it updated with launch news.

We do constantly review and evolve the channels we make available and try very hard to give everyone something they really want so it's really useful to hear comments from customers like you. This really helps us develop our future thinking and product roadmap.

Kind regards Emma

Emma Jones - General Manager
Future Entertainment"

I'm very dubious as to how accurate this e-mail is. How likely is it for a Virgin employee to make the following statement? "We are in fairly advanced negotiations with Premier Sports and we really hope to launch this channel in the coming months."

I agree with the content not being the same - I just think that 'new channel'= one which is added to the existing ones and not the rebranding of an existing channel. That's just me anyway. :)

I just visited their website, some very interesting programming on that channel.

10:00pm - Beverly Hills ***** (Beverly Hills ***** - sexual desire, lust, passion and infidelity. That means it must be time for a movies4men late night film.)

11:30pm - Killer Sex (Killer Sex - sexual desire, lust, passion and infidelity. That means it must be time for a movies4men late night film.)

1:00am - Assault of The Killer Bimbos (Three luscious girls flee boredom and murder in a high-speed cross country chase. Heading for Mexico the trio must deal with unwanted attention from adoring men.)

Then at 2:30am I was shocked to see Exit The Dragon - Enter The Tiger. I thought WTF! This channel has bestiality movies too?

It turns out it's a documentary about the death of Bruce Lee.

Not so much frightened denphone i think in certain countries SKY/ESPN have a close relationship which means they simply will not take each other on in any meaningful way.

Trouble is denphon that would have to be proved,i always remember a piece in the Guardian in which ESPN said in some areas they would compete in others they would not, ,and sky do ESPNS marketing in the uk so it does not take a lot of working out really.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...cup-sky-sports

Read the above link about theree quarters of the way down tells you how close the relationship is denphone.

Wolff says ESPN is happy for Sky to be the senior partner in the UK. "There will be markets where we bid against each other; there are other territories where we will not. You could have a very good second position in a market if that's the best business model you can build at that time." He adds: "We have a complex, multifaceted relationship with Sky [but] complex relationships aren't new to us. We just have to manage that."

 Hmm! I must be gettin' old. I'm pretty sure when I had a similar discussion on here a couple of years ago, the consensus was that the V+ Box did not have HD in the name, even though it had HD in the functionality.

Now DF has introduced the V-HD Box! What's that?

It's the whole DVD+R/-R/+RW/-RW, HD DVD, Blu-ray fiasco all over again!!! :(

Just to recap ...
  • I'm not a new customer
  • I'm a long-standing XL customer
  • I don't have a faulty V+ Box that needs to be replaced
  • I may have a faulty V Box that needs to be replaced
  • I don't feel I should have to pay for a TiVo Box just to get PVR functionality

Yep that's pretty much how I see it panning out , its still a great result for VM subscribers as they would get 46 games included with XL instead of this years 23.

Unfortunately so.

Good news for boxing fans though. It's a rare outing for boxing on the BBC next weekend when they broadcast the British Championships next Saturday afternoon from 2:30pm.

Many of the fighters on show are competing for places in the GB squad for London 2012. It's a good chance to see the boxing stars of tomorrow, today!

Because it's not tucked away on the red button, we'll be able to enjoy this on BBC One HD.

Yes no argument from me there mate VM subs do get a good deal on the XL package with ESPN, Not sure when the current deal ends though? hopefully a new one would be put in place.46 games would be pretty good value.:)

Now DF has introduced the V-HD Box! What's that?

It's the whole DVD+R/-R/+RW/-RW, HD DVD, Blu-ray fiasco all over again!!! :(

Just to recap ...
  • I'm not a new customer
  • I'm a long-standing XL customer
  • I don't have a faulty V+ Box that needs to be replaced
  • I don't feel I should have to pay for a TiVo Box just to get PVR functionality

The only choices are a Cisco non pvr V HD box , 500GB Tivo and 1TB Tivo.
http://shop.virginmedia.com/digital-...top-boxes.html

I personally think the £3 per month per box for customers on TV XL will not last long. I personally think they could increase the charge to £5 for TV M+ and TV L customers.

It's much better how they do it on their site now , XL with TIVO 27.50 when took with a phone no mention of the three pound , Skys entertainment plus is 25.00 to new customers with no HD bar FTA channels so the difference is actually 2.50 not bad really for 23 HD channels and ESPN and TVC OD.

Getting back on topic for a bit ...

We non-HD, non-TiVo customers have not had much added to our lot for a year or so but have had some channels moved to accommodate HD variants. Back when we had some new additions there was speculation that VM would re-align the EPG in the new year (2011) to group related channels together again. This has not happened and it is even more necessary now following the aforementioned channel moves. It would be nice to have the various UKTV, Sky, ITV and C4 derivatives grouped together.

Is there any news on this? Should we still be speculating, a year on, that VM have not done it because they're adding a shed load of new channels, time-shifts and HD variants in the new year (2012)?

Thanks for the links, HDB.

So are you suggesting that VM may make TiVo a no cost option for XL TV pack customers and increase the cost to customers with the other packs to make up the shortfall and encourage them to upgrade to XL?

I think Channel 5 deal with Virgin is up in 2012.

I think that is why we are not getting Channel 5 +1 until sometime in 2012.

The last one was signed in July 2010.

Oops! I missed that bit.

Yes but that's for new customers or existing customers who are upgrading. Surely they'll swap my VBox for a V+Box HD especially as I suspect my VBox is
showing signs of failure.

I have to get an engineer out soon anyway to resolve a low signal problem affecting both the TV and broadband services. I'll be asking about swapping the box when I book the appointment but I wanted to know what the story was in advance so I can ask with confidence.

They won't swap a non PVR for a PVR as a service call.

All VHDs now have HD activated. However, you aren't guaranteed to get a VHD as a replacement for a faulty V-box.

My brother had Virgin out yesterday as the box in his bedroom wasn't working. It's the standard V-box. They managed to replace it like for like.

They still get refurbished, and there are plenty coming back from customers who are upgrading, so they will be available for as long as VM choose to keep them available. Same goes for the V+.
