=== Ask Media Boy ===
Q: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION ABOUT VIRGIN MEDIA FROM?
A: I get all my info from Virgin Media workers (NOTE: I called them ''An Insider''), Virgin Media viewers, my blogs and Web Sites (NOTE: When I used web sites I will say ''Info from WEB SITE NAME'').

Q: I HAVE GOT NEWS BUT I WORK FOR VIRGIN MEDIA AND I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO SEE MY USER NAME?
A: All you need to do is pm me right now and tell me what Virgin Media area you are from* and I will post your news on ''Coming soon to Virgin TV'' for you.

* = I also need to know you local cable network - was you in an Ex-Telewest, Ex-ntl or Ex-Cable & Wireless area before Virgin Media appeared.

Q: WHY AM I NOT GETTING ''CHANNEL Z'' FOR?A: Some channels are only in some areas - Magic Radio is only in Ex-ntl and Ex-Cable & Wireless areas but Ex-Telewest area have got BBC Radio 4 LW.

Q: WHY HAS VIRGIN MEDIA PULLED SOME LOCAL RADIO OFF EX-TELEWEST FOR?
A: The BBC Radio stations for England, Wales, Scotland and NI will replace them (But I do not know when that will be). They are already broadcasting in non Ex-Telewest areas between Virgin TV Channels 930 to 936. This is part of the process of aligning the Channels so that everyone can have the same Channels lineup.

It's only good news if you don't have the Sci-Fi channel for Warehouse 13, great shown though season finale next Tuesday :)

I can never get excited about TV show premiers on certain channels, when they have already been shown on another abet pay channel :erm:

Hi all. I've been out of touch for a few days but I see it has been quite quiet here.

Two things I've noticed here in Aylesbury, ex-C&W ...

We now have BBC News Multiscreen (just as Freeview users are losing it).

The number of available channels has increased again from 312 to 316 although I'm not sure where the extra bandwidth has come from nor what it will be used for.

Thanks for info.

I think the extra channels will be for BBC News Multiscreen.

Can anyone in an Ex-ntl area tell me if BBC NM is available in YOUR area?

I'm in Nottingham, ex NTL, and all I get on BBC News is the standard bbc red button menu, iPlayer etc. No multiscreen.

Can someone please answer me this one question, when VM took over, and now everyone should have this network, why some areas don't have the same channels, it does not make sense, surely if VM take over the contract for the whole lot, you keep hearin Ex TW and Ex CW why can't they make it ALL VM if it is the same company..

It is a good question, but comes down to the legacy networks that they put together to make one. Even after this time there are subtle differences that are taking a lot of time effort and money to upgrade

sherer 27-11-2009 16:01

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

plus surely TW and NTL also had seperate contracts for the channels, they have to wait for those to expire before they can be turned into a VM contract for the whole network.

Don't think that's even an issue after all of this time. The Answer to Arthur's question, as someone prevously stated, is basically down to legacy inherited hardware and infrastructure. The Next Gen. will level the playing field (so to speak) and, it seems, introduce new features and, eventually, IPTV.

Oh, no! Now we'll have to refer to it as VM TV TNG! Damn trekkies!

Here's a spanner in the works, IF ex TW and CW boxes are the same, as mine hasn't changed since TW, then there should not be a problem, I am not tech minded, then surely, l cannot see any problem, I worked for TW for one day, and what l saw amazed me, here is how they changed your box from Anologue to Ditigal, and l did it, they just add a small metal tube about half and inch in length, which is the same size as a water pipe in your tap, and it was done, and it cost the customer £80.00 for which he got a reciept for, then when it went ditigal it didn't cost a penny, they didn't change the box or anything, Its the engineering side of VM which is taking its time, l will never understand VM, there are customers wanting the same channels as everyone else, but they have to wait, until an engineer pushes a button.

What l am saying is that if Virgin take over a cable network, you don't expect several years later some areas of that network still under the same old system ie l was with TW, and yet other old networks are still waiting to change over to the VM way of things do you.

Are you aware how much it costs to upgrade a cable network?

They haven't had any need to get every network they took over running on the same equipment and giving the same services before, the differences in them were small enough that it wasn't a huge issue.

If they had of done they'd have had to spend money to get them in line, and would now be spending even more money to upgrade them to the next gen platform.

They looked at it from a business point of view, where supporting several different networks makes far more sense than unification when you know that you're going to be rolling out a next gen platform not that far in the future.

Arthur when I went from analogue to digital they changed the stb, what they added to yours sounds like an attenuator all that does is reduce signal strength. It will not convert an analogue stb to digital.
If that was the case all we would need to watch freeview on our analogue tv's is one of these magical metal tubes.

Maybe that's why you only lasted the day, engineer you were with said you to gullible to work for Telewest.

I am in an ex-C&W area and I have 298 services on Standard V Box and 305 on V+ Box in Technical Stuff. I have yet to receive the BBC News Multiscreen. I notice from the 'Channel Provisioning' page on the Standard Box that the 'Security Fraud Message' and 'Non Standard Equipment' channels have gone. To me it seems that it may mean that the card switch in my area is imminent, though I am just speculating there.

MB: Just for clarification, I noticed from here and your blog that you've said that the BBC News multiscreens have already been added to ex cwc areas. Plus, you've said that BBC London Radio has been added in London and BBC Radio 4 LW has been added to ex-cwc areas.

This has not happened to all areas yet, including my area of London. These services are being added to each headend one at a time, it seems.

London has several headends, so if one person in London says they have something doesn't mean all do - yet.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

....the reason it's several, is London used to have several cablecos each with its own headend.

You may be thinking of the super headends:

Ex Telewest in Knowsley
Ex Ntl in Langley
Ex CwC in Bromley

Anyway, this will all change/is changing with all the new cisco gear being put in as part of the next gen network. Me thinks there will be lots of consolidation going on, might even end up with just one network in the end.:)

Can you imagine that no more waiting for months or years for things to be come available in different parts of the network. I have to say 2009 has been a good year for Cable. Lets hope they hit the ground running in 2010 and see the fruition of the Tivo and Cisco deal come through quick and that subscriber numbers start to grow.

its quite possibel with the network they will have and if they open it up so channels only have ot pay for a epg and bandwidht of the channel then they could launch channels before they launch on sky so giving people a incentive to join knowing virign is the first platform things ill launch on instead of sky and then get the channels the good ones ie not shopping or adult that are on sky and get them on virign so they can then offer the same as sky but maybe for less? the cinemagic deal is now the topping on the icing so to say ther enow competeing with sky wonder if voip cusotmer will get it:?

I do have BBC News Multiscreen now but I guess you don't navigate it using the numbers on the keypad (e.g. 400 for weather) as you would on Sky. It's all menu based, is that correct?

Hi Media Boy, IF VM are going to have Channel M, i assume this will only be for Manchester, as this is a very good channel, l have it on Sky. As normally with VM they bring out this new services, but these ar for the local area, which is not fair, as it would be great to do what Sky do, you can get any channel by putting the channel number into EPG, and we watch Scottish TV all the time, being my wife is Scottish.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2009)

Can anyone in the London area tell me if:

Ex-C&W Viewers: Has BBC Radio 4 LW launch in your area yet?

Ex-Telewest Viewers: Has Virgin moved the following radio channels -

Magic 105.4 FM to Channel 928 (Was Channel 935).
BBC London 94.9 to Channel 937 (Was Channel 930).
Kiss 100 London to Channel 963 (Was Channel 933).

Thanks for any info
Media Boy.

I'm sure I used to have it but it doesn't appear to be listed, will keep you posted though if it appears.

Is Sky Sports Xtra soon to rebranded as Sky Sports 4?

Ofcom has today posted the following on their web site:

Quote:

(Own By) British Sky Broadcasting Ltd - (Old Name) Sky Sports Extra - (New name) Sky Sports 4
See for yourself here - http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/ifi/tvlic...monthly/200911

ITV put ITV1 +1 on hold until after January.

Does that then mean we won't get sky sports 4 as it will not be stated as that channel on the rate card?

Not going to happen.

No new channels are testing on Virgin right now.

I think this month will see Virgin adding BBC Radio 4 LW and some local BBC Radio Channels to Ex-ntl and Ex-C&W areas. With the local BBC Radio Channels being move to Virgin Channel 937+ so that BBC Radio from Scotland, Wales and Ireland can appear on Virgin Channel 930 on the Ex-Telewest side before Virgin Media stop adding / removing channels on their EPG over Christmas and new year holidays.

Wish that was the same for baby tv as I pay an extra £3.50 a month for that one channel unlike sky where it's included in the childrens pack.
