When we had analogue cable we used to get an alternate ITV region. It was actually used by Telecential as a selling point to get customers. Sadly we lost it in the switch to digital cable, whereas the adjacent franchises still have it.

Well whatever your view point we are a culturally and ethnically diverse country. That doesn't even have anything to do with immigration - we're made up of three countries and a bit of another. Diversity is part of our make-up. There's no point burying your head in the sand and pretending we're not at a point in our history where services have to reflect the diverse nature of our population. Personally I can't really draw a distinction between subsidising Hum Europe or subsidising MTV. I watch neither, but there will be people choosing Virgin because of those channels who are heavily subsidising my viewing of Arsenal v. Southampton tonight and I am beyond certain that I've got the better end of the deal!

Yup, well said Andy. It is also worth remembering our past. It is not as if our deepest descendants were all British. We are pretty much just a mixture of many different cultures brought over from different countries. Not even St. George was English.

But don't you keep asking for VM to keep adding channels irrespective of whether they show rubbish content?

I think you should be forced to watch it non stop for twenty four hours :D

IIRC, some local TV stations (for whatever reason) are starting their services on satellite and cable after their Freeview launch. Maybe it's because the Freeview carriage is gifted to them

I doubt they would want to encourage streaming channels from a competitor!

Exactly, like I said earlier, if they aren't preventing English channels from launching due to capacity issues and others aren't expected to pay for them I have no problem with foreign speaking channels.

Unfortunately, there are several in the XL pack that i'm on which means i'm subsidising them. I would expect such channels to be premium add on services, maybe VM have calculated that it draws more asians to the VM platform and/or it encourages them to upgrade to XL and is ultimately more profitable?

I realise that we all effectively subsidise channels that we don't watch, but at least we have the choice to do so if they are in English.

Finally, I do not believe that we are a multicultural country, nor that we should be encouraging this- particularly as the population has never been consulted about this social experiment.

There can only be one culture in any given country, that is not to say that minor cultures should not be tolerated as long as they are not problematic.

Enoch Powell's prediction of "Rivers of blood" has come true, but not quite in the way that he envisaged, but that's for another thread.

Foreign language channels are fine, just as if I visit other countries (I visit Holland as part of my work semi regularly) I am happy to find the BBC channels, in English carried there.

Edit: yikes
