Just had a complete loss of service for about 8 hours for the first time in 17 months... wonder if its anything to do with Cat C Reseg... I hope so.. it's due to be fixed at the end of the month.. after a *cough* short *cough* 12 months

Sephiroth 03-07-2013 12:02

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

After a Cat-C reseg (Or indeed any reseg) it is probable that your IP address would change. You could end up on the same UBR and line card but IMO that's against th odds.

Aww, dodgy electrics in my house caused me a load of power outages and its bumped up the interleave, and getting packet loss spikes now as well

Also, due to a change in circumstance, I may be moving house anyway, in which case ill have to give up my beloved Sky FTTC :(

Is FTTC not in your list of priorities when looking for a new place?

Yes, but I didnt look for the place, I am staying with a friend who already has Virgin Media 60Mb, and no FTTC availability until October, and as I am working my notice ill be moved in a couple of weeks :(

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Well that's a shame. But at least Virgin's 60meg is nearly the same as Sky's 80 meg, right? ...............right?!

My condolences :ghugs:

A couple of nights ago my connection changed away from the 94. range and the latency went back down again. In theory there should be no difference to the IP given but....

Some heavy downloading yesterday afternoon/evening

The interleaving will eventually knock off anyway, happened to me a few months back and it reverted in around 7-10 days.

Noticed that my internet connection went down this morning.

Checked the modem status page to find that my area has been upgraded from 4 channels to 6 channels on the downstream and i now have 2 upstream channels.

Because it is a freaky piece of kit that needs a good booting now and again.
Usually that will stabilise it.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

There was some maintenance in my area last week and I have to say, since then my connection has been spot on.

Here's where the change request hit (23rd):

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...23-07-2013.png

You can see a clear issue there. But then the next day (24th):

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...24-07-2013.png

25th:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...25-07-2013.png

26th:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...26-07-2013.png

27th (I was doing a LOT of hefty downloading on this day):
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...27-07-2013.png

28th (The lost packets here are my fault, I was unplugging and plugging in the modem/router as part of some cable management):
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...28-07-2013.png

29th:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...29-07-2013.png

All in all, pretty impressed really. Especially since when doing my "cable management" I knocked the SH2 off its perch and cracked the plastic shell open. Oops! Still works, though.

Hahaha, I'll see what I can manage when I get home. At the moment the frame is broken open on one side, but not completely off. I might be able to pry it some more, may as well since it's already clearly broken.

You're right, but where are you seeing that? I can only see router.asus.com which could be anything surely? (Unless I'm being particularly blind).

Anyway, 172.x.x.x is an internal IP like 192.x.x.x so it's a bit odd that it has suddenly changed.

Possibly a stupid question, but when you log into your router, what is the router's IP set to?

Sephiroth 30-07-2013 14:31

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Martin needs to go to 172.18.200.1 and see if that logs him into the router.

If not, then 192.168.1.1 gets him in and the plot thickens. The system log cold be examined - towards the extreme right hand side of the page to see if there is a change of IP address in any of the service requests.

As I said, and as oper Kush's humungus diagram,

Advanced Settingd --> LAN -- change address to 192.168.1.1 & reboot the thing.

Dunno how that happened.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I wonder if the ASus defaults to a 172 if it detects a conflict on the 192.168.1.1 address or something? Just a guess, I have no idea how that could have happened either.

Sephiroth 30-07-2013 16:20

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I've just joined my Infinity & VM PHY circuits so there is a 192.168.1.1 conflict. Of course I can't see both LANs at the same time but when I put the Infinity circuit back onto its isolated LAN, if Kush's thoughts are correct then I would expect to see a change of LAN IP address on my ASUS.

It remained at 192.168.1.1

It's possible and is certainly the most likely candidate but I've never seen mine do that (Got the same router).

AS Kush says. But it shouldn't have becasue the default is 192.168.1.1

seph remember I told you I had both routers on my lan and I ould switch at will using commands on my pc?

I thought you was going to try that, no swapping cables then.

Just reassign the ip for one of the gateways, have both on lan and can play around with gateways on client pc's with both gateways phsically connected at same time. Can even change gw for just specific sites/ips.

Sephiroth 31-07-2013 14:38

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Yeah - Chrys; I tried that (PC commands) but couldn't be othered to find out why it wouldn't work first time.

There's no problem if I have different IPs on the routers, but they are the same because of devices with fixed IPs that I can then patch to either network as required.

But I will loo at your second suggestion in the comig days. That has attractions. One of the problems to overcome is that Vista isn't very good with this. But I'm buying a new laptop as my main machine and Windows 7 is very good on the network side.

Finally all I was trying to do in this case was see if the ASUS IP address changed upon an IP address clash.

You're still running Vista on something? Get that upgraded to 7 asap! I'll even donate a Win7 key if you need one.

Problem is that it won't upgrade. It demands a reinstall and I've got some delicate (legal) software that no longer licenses over the web and thus may not install as I need it. If you know a lift and shift with registry frig method for getting round that - do please let me know!

you can have both gateways on all pcs with different metrics, then you got auto fallback if one goes down.

It demands a reinstall? Are you trying to go from Vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit? Because that'll definitely ask for a reinstall. Going 32bit to 32bit though should work though.

Also just getting back to my superhub - I haven't had a chance to look at it properly yet, but this is what it currently looks like (Apologies for the poor quality):

that would depend on the app. You saying it has online activation and the online activation servers are now shut down?

I would suggest setting up a VM, put win7 inside it and try to install the app, if it fails you still have it on your host system.

My friends graph:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2013/08/47.png

I think the best VM graph I've ever seen, he's on Stok17 UBR, which isn't even listed on UK Internet Report.

Something I noticed however, is that before his upstream bonding, he had 0 packet loss, afterwards he had them little spots of packet loss as seen on quite a few VM graphs

Backup Vista registry before reinstalling if you like to do things manually, or just use the easy transfer wizard built in to windows to get it done automatically.

You must be short of something to do to go back 4 days just for that comment and then provide a useless reply.

This is the link to the post which sets out the problem.

First of all, a firmware download doesn't reset the defaults. I've checked that.

Second, it's the 172.18.200.xx IP address that's perplexing. Any other ideas on that?

Ermm, I just got back and went through reading all the posts marked as "New" by the forum.

You've clearly not developed any firmware for routers.

How is it perplexing? Default IP range changes at the same time as a firmware update. Not sure why you can't comprehend the possibility one caused the other.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Yes - but you could have made a helpful reply. Can you think of a reason for the 172.18.200.xx IP address? That poster could only get onto his router with the 192.168.1.1. address.

Kushan 04-08-2013 22:31

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

THe Asus routers all use a 192.168.x.x IP range and none of their recent firmwares have switched to a 172 IP range. So while yes, the firmware update is certainly a likely candidate for the change, it still doesn't explain why it switched to a 172 IP range. If it were as simple as resetting to defaults, then it would reset to 192.

Ermm, I think you'll find he stated the exact opposite.

There are many different reasons you might want to switch to the 172.16.0.0/12 range, deliberately or otherwise. Can you think of any good reason to use 196.168.0.0/16?

What is there to "help"? We all took guesses at what caused it. There is nothing wrong, nothing to fix, and nothing to really explain. It's no more of a problem than if their router uses 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1...

You frequently get glitches across firmware updates where they have changed the location that certain variables get stored, or the encoding of them, and they flip to some unintended value as a result of trying to "preserve" older settings. This is why it is widely recommended you do a factory reset as part of any kind of firmware change.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about though. 172.16.0.0/12 is a perfectly legitimate IP range to use and evidently it worked perfectly fine, and nobody even noticed until we deliberately went searching for it.

Sephiroth 04-08-2013 22:39

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

It didn't work fine at all. It screwed up access to his fixed IP devices in the 192.168 range.

qasdfdsaq 04-08-2013 22:46

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I don't see where he has claimed that anywhere.

But even if he had, he shouldn't have been trying to access to fixed IP devices in a range he did not have a fixed IP in.

You can't expect static addressing to work if you're lazy and don't assign static addresses to something...

Kushan 04-08-2013 22:47

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Plus, I would argue that if one setting has randomly changed, then what else has changed? Better safe than sorry.

I'm sorry, but I don't buy this "some bits flip and values get changed to preserver other settings". It doesn't make any sense for it to switch to 192 to 172 for any reason. It's not like some random bits were flipped and it just happened to land on another internal IP range. Surely if it was going to reset to anything, it would be the default of 192. I think it was definitely a glitch of some kind, but I can't think of any reason why it would be programmed to do that.

qasdfdsaq 04-08-2013 22:53

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

There are plenty of random occurrences in the computing world you cannot explain or will never understand. I've made firmware for routers and I have both seen it happen in practice and can understand the theory behind why it happens. If you don't accept my explanation - fine. I may be wrong and you don't have to agree but I don't see you coming up with a better explanation, nor any reason either of us should care enough to try.

Dunno about you but I've come to accept things occasionally doing randomly doing stuff you don't expect to be a completely normal occurrence in the consumer IT world.

Telf11 has gained another downstream overnight. Got 6 downstream and 2 upstream now. TBB graph shows the work being done overnight nicely.

Anyone else getting a marginal "hump" on their graph? Had one last night that started just before 10pm, but I thought this morning that it could of been due to the work they did overnight (extra downstream). Got one again tonight that has started around 11pm. Doesn't seem to be causing any issues though.

Internet went off at 7am this morning, checked service status page and was greeted with We're doing some essential work on our network at the moment to make sure we're always giving you the best service possible. We'll keep any disruption to a minimum, but services in some areas might be affected temporarily.". Estimated fix date is 5 hours from now... Hopefully something to son with the resegmentation

I'd say it was an issue with TBB.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Yeah an issue TBB end as its on my Sky graph too. Interesting to see my minimum latency went down a millisecond straight after the red blip and lasted a few hours. Usually the green line is religiously solid even with the heavy type of downloading I was doing for the last 24 hours. Wondering if less network traffic due to rebooting their ping blades caused the effect. I could be a pixel lower if no one else used the service! :D

I've been getting told for weeks now that there's an SNR issue in my area and every time I report it I get the stock excuse 'will be fixed in 5 days'. Now pricing up alternative suppliers for the first time in about 20 years. Fed up throwing over £120 a month at a supplier that is more interested in topping some speed league table than providing a stable service.

Right now, it keeps dropping in and out after a few minutes, I don't even know if this post get on. However when it has comeback, latency is great also my upstream ids have also changed (ids 1 and 3, 45800000 and 27400000Hz respectively)

as for my home network, I have SU2 in modem mode connected to Netgear WNDR3007 my desktop is wired and I have an ipad and a phone on the 5ghz wireless (my netgear).

Chrysalis, unfortunately only virgin know if both of these properties are serviced by same group or not. Though the nearest VM green box is visible from both properties.

Thanks guys for helping.

Again lost Connection I predict the same happen again, So I fire this post off before then
