Would make sense because the STBs need some kind of modification to allow the higher speeds I believe, at least the ones on Telewest did/do.

Will hopefully solve the problem some STBs have with crackling during large downloads or uploads.

Mine does it when my computer isn't even on so that's a load of.

Either way, when are they gonna fix it? CR3 is finished isn't it? Get on with it already....

You could just have a knackered box. Has it been replaced?

NTL don't announce download dates until (at most) a week or so before. As soon as someone gets an exact date, I am sure it will be announced on here.

If you've ever bothered to ever read anything that's ever been written about the MR1 **** up with the sound by changing it to a level that's just too high then you'll know that it's got absolutely nothing to do with the box and everything to do with a dodgy software upgrade that wasn't tested at all before they put it out.

We know. That's what 'coming soon' is for!!!!!

I have. The fact that very few people on here (compared to the numbers of people who probably are using MR1) seem to have complained would suggest that the problem is as likely to have been caused by a dodgy box.

Have you conclusively eliminated the box hardware itself as the source of the problem (ie had the box replaced)?

You complain, but it does no good, and they blame the channels for pushing the sound level beyond the limit - and some fix it - funny how it was never a problem before MR1 though?

As for the STB remote volume, I give up all hope of that ever being usable - it would be better if it could have a user preference preset for level, as it is consistently louder by a considerable margin, than the terrestrial TV channels or the video - not just a bit different, but enough to be too loud going one way, and too quiet going the other.

Pre MR1 - No complaints about crackling sound
After MR1 - Complaints about crackling sound

I'm no Inspector Clouseau but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

I'll ask again. Has the box been replaced?

As I have stated previously, I have no problem with a crackling noise, and I am also running MR1. Has it occured to you that any bug in the software may only occur on certain models of box (or certain revisions of those models)?

It may also be that the box itself is knackered. They *do* fail a lot more frequently around update time, which is why NTL actually have to wait a while before rolling updates out (they need to ensure they have adequate stocks for any replacement boxes). That failure may not be anything major (ie the box may not just die, but may show random problems, like possibly the memory containing the part of the software that decodes the audio stream is corrupting the audio that is output).

All I am saying is that if NTL have not replaced the box, ensure they do. If the new box still has the same problem, then that problem is elsewhere (in this case probably the software). One of the basic principles of fault finding is to eliminate the simple causes first.

I am not denying there are problems with MR1, and I too wish the volume control on the remote worked (if nothing else, it could help solve the signal level problems).

I just think that if I had the same problems with the STB that garyparsons seems to be having, I would complain to NTL until they repaired or replaced the STB. I wouldn't wait for a software update that may or may not fix the problem, and going on NTL's (& C&W's) past performance could be a long time away.

Re: BMR When?

already had them out, changed the box, same deal, changed it back seen as THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BOX. The best bit about that though is that when you ring up they say they've never heard of this problem?? One look at this forum tells me otherwise.

It's nothing to do with the volume control.
It's everything to do with the level of the volume in the box set by the new software.

scastle, your location says that you are in london? this problem only happens on bromley. unless they've rewired the network then i'm not surprised that this doesn't affect you.

in my case i'm using a surround amp for the sound on the tv. the center speaker sounds like it's on a snap cracke and pop advert on most channels. And before someone wades in with some comments about my setup, it works fine and dandy playing dvd's at twice the volume i listen to the tv so it ain't goosed. also..

1. before MR1 the volume in the stb was set at +6
2. after MR2, the volume in the stb was cranked up to +10 (to make the alarm louder apparently)

My equipment is fine. There's nothing wrong with it.

The only thing that is wrong is the software. I can't alter that.

I think that's as simple as i can make it.

Re: BMR When?

From what I understand, neither 4000s nor Samsungs have the audio problem... maybe just threatening cancellation until they change your box will work?

EDIT: And all of London is on the Bromley network. They haven't "rewired" them, they've been CWC/Bromley from the start.

Fair enough. Just thought that a possibly faulty box was something worth eliminating.

If the volume control let you control that volume?

Although my location says London, I am actually in Bromley (about 3 or 4 miles from the Super Head End), so I am definately on the Bromley network. So, yes. Any problems on the Bromley network can possibly affect me.

Edit: garyparson, a couple of questions: Do you have a Pace 1000 or 2000 box? Do you have 1Mb Broadband delivered through it? If you can answer yes to both, NTL may be upgrading your box anyway. They are upgrading my Pace 1000..

Re: BMR When?

I have a 1000 and from what i've read these are the better box so i certainly don't want it changing anyway.

I think i've mentioned this before but i'll just run it past everyone again..

Pre MR1 - No complaints about crackling sound
After MR1 - Complaints about crackling sound

Does anyone actually know when they are putting it back again to normal levels instead of trying to blame the channel providers?

Actually, as I understand it, the Samsung boxes (after a few initial problems) are good boxes. Yes, the Pace 1000 is probably the best Pace box, but I haven't heard many complaints about the 2000

You have. Several people (myself included) have tried to offer you help that may fix the problem NOW, not in a few months or whenever NTL plan to release MR2 but ,TBH, you don't seem to want help. You do seem to want to argue.

And I just did a quick search on your posts. Nearly every one has had something to do with this issue. Now, I have no problems with you using the forum for complaining (it is part of the function of the forum after all) and nor is it my place to say anything even if I did have a problem, but if I had recieved sub-standard service from any company for as long as you appear to have from NTL, I would seriously consider changing suppliers, or at least threaten to do so.

Re: BMR When?

It was done to death a long time back on NTHW ... maybe even as far back as .COM.

1000 Box here, and can't remember the last time I heard an over-level sound distortion - the channels where it was common seem to had the appropriate adjusments made, so if you're suffering on the odd channel, it MAY be the channel, but if it's most channels, then I'd say it's the box, or the level on the SCART is upsetting the TV or video.
