Re: Can browse, but cant ftp or anything else

I'm goin mental here, using a flaming dialup modem now! aaaaaah mama

Anyway, the company who provide my server have assured me that there's nothing wrong at their end, but that ...

The upstream says they are blocking UDP , but they say that Terminal services or FTP shouldn't be effected. That's why your trace stopped , due to them blocking UDP packets.

hope that makes sense to somebody, cos it means nothing to me, I'm only a programmer

Re: Can browse, but cant ftp or anything else

I had a similar problem to you with my Windows Server 2003 box not being able to connect to any FTP sites. I could browse the internet fine, I just could not use FTP. I discovered that it was ICS on my box which was stopping it, once I had turned ICS off, I could connect to FTP sites.

Stewh 18-02-2004 18:25

Re: Can browse, but cant ftp or anything else

As far as I am aware I am not using ICS, I've got the cable modem going into an SMC Barracuda and from there to the pc.

It worked until around 10 or so yesterday, then zilch ever since.
Thanks tho.

And that includes the suspected router.

Perhaps you missed my post yesterday - the return path from the server back to me appears to me totally different to the forward path. The failure began here just after 1:15pm - all connectivity was lost for about a minute and then just the problem I (still) have now.

might have been around the same time for me actually Pem, I forgot, I was out all morning yesterday, so around 1:15 would be about right.

Did someone trip over the hamster wheel at one of the routers or something maybe?

Re: Can browse, but cant ftp or anything else

I've been asked the following, from my server centre.

Can you find out if your provider is blocking anything coming back?

Anyone know where at NTL I could contact to find this out?

guys seeing as I am lucky to have ssh on the target box I initiated a ssh connection from another box I have ssh on (essentially relayed to it) and have ran a traceroute from the target to me.

2 problems, hop 11 and the fact it never finishes the route (firewall disabled at home during this test)

Re: Can browse, but cant ftp or anything else

I'm having what appears to be the same problem
I have a linux server based in Manchester
From my NTL Cable modem connection
I cannot connect via FTP, SSH, https or email but I can browse the web with http
If I disconnect my Cable modem and use an old 56k dial-up connection everything is fine. but so very very slow.
After hours on the phone to NTL yesterday they sent an engineer today to replace the Modem! a real nice guy who went through the motions of customer relations but it didn't solve the problem.

I have contacted 8 other people in my location who I know use NTL CM and the same server for email,
7 of them don't have a problem but 1 does including me so thats errr.... 2 people with the same problem in the Grimsby area.

below is a tracert from my system, with and without a router connected.
