He popped out to his van and appeared with a box containing the rather smart and compact looking blue 250 modem. He removed my old ntlhome 100 pants modem. he connected it up and started entering numbers into his phone, i assumed to send details of the new modem to be registered.

Told me to wait 20 minutes and it should be sorted.

1st 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps
2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps
3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps
4th 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9821 Kbps, 9.59 Mbps

Jobs a good un! I can now pay £35 quid a month and actually get 10mb!

For those who are having similar problems (100 and 120 modems) dont hesitate to ring tech support and get your self a new modem. Dont put up with paying for a service you arent using.

Cheers

What happens if you already have a 250 tho?

Re: 10mb connection

In most cases if you have the older modems (100,120) getting the new 250 will improve tha speeds. The engineer tested the cable at mine and the signal or whatever was strong so it was clearly the older modem that was affecting the overall speed.

In quite a few cases the newer modem hasnt helped. I suppose it just helps you find out whether or not the modem is a factor. I get the feeling a lot of people havent rang for an engineer to come out and check the connection.

It is a ball ache to do. Thankfully for me it payed off. If your getting really bad speeds like i was and have the older modems then dont hesistate to get it sorted. The problem is those who have the older modems and are getting 6 or 7 meg. As its supposed to be an up to 10mb service, youd probably get fobbed off. I think mine was a worse case scenario. Also different areas arounfd the uk have different problems. The engineer that i had said they were having problems at the minute, i had to stop myself from saying,"No SH_T! :)

Tweaked MTU & RWIN gets me 9Mbps+ on my 120 modem... :-)
