Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
I don't know why anyone would want to host a server using NTL's connections when you can free up bandwidth and resources by using shared hosting. When companies like Mher.org(1$/month) can supply decent hosting so cheaply it negates the need to host anything at home.

"BTW, uptime 100% 90% or whatever is not an indication of a good server....neglected one may be!! But not always!!"
What?! The better the uptime the better the server and the connection is. Without the server, the connection is useless and without the connection the server is useless. "In my house I have Fedora Core 4 installed in my laptop with Apache, SSH, FTP running….and I use www.DynDNS.org!!!!" I use no-ip.com and Abyss Web Server (proven to be more stable than Apache, but thats a different argument), big deal. "I don't know why anyone would want to host a server using NTL's connections when you can free up bandwidth and resources by using shared hosting. When companies like Mher.org(1$/month) can supply decent hosting so cheaply it negates the need to host anything at home." Exactly the reason: "Not everything is possible on shared hosting including VPS....sometimes the TOS limits your actions......such as hosting questionable sites for instance!" I run a server from home because I have REAL root access, not virtual. Its not a not a virtual server, its a real one. Is 500% easier running one at home that at somewhere else in the world where I have to FTP 70GB of website data. Yes, 70GB. Also, I hate Apache. Im supporting a piece of software called Abyss Web Server and its only possible to use it on a private or dedicated server with root access. I really dont see what people have against running a server at home... Whatever floats your boat I say... |

You might be lucky and get a cgi hit counter. Most people would want php and sql as a minimum, and if you have to e-mail support of every server conf file change, its easier to do it yourself, and you learn more.. I use Suse to host my servers, as it was my 1st foray into linux, very user friendly (read idiot proof). It manages my 1.6Gb SQL database, and a few vhosts, irc, and 3 ftp servers with no problems and has only been offline when I had a power outage and when my router needed replacement. I dont think I have 'had to' reboot the system since installing it about 3 months ago. |

I don't have a problem with you running a server at home. What you do with your connection is between you and NTL. I have a server at home I occasionally use (although I am the only person with access, as it's strictly for me to mess around on). One other option, however, is co-located servers (such as the one you are reading this on). These cost a little more, but you do get your own server, and can do pretty much what you want on it. Regarding the 70 Gig FTP, would that really be a problem? I cannot see that you would need to FTP that data regularly, even for backup purposes as you can either do incremental backups or pay for the host to do it. |
Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
My VPS server has full Root access, it may be a Virtual Server (a partition of a real one) but I have all the access to it that I would have if I was running on the server that is by my feet right now (which i use for IRC, WWW, FTP and Samba) The only downside to my hosting company is they Disallow running an IRC server on anything but their dedicated servers for some reason.

Maybe IRC is CPU hungry? I was going to get a Lycos VDS, but I looked at the specs and I thought "Its cheaper to run one at home. The speed is the same, 25KB/s upload on the cheapest option and they dont garuntee you server speed of any kind, the RAM is very low and you only get 15GB of bandwidth. When NTL move to unlimited I can get the same bandwidth but so much more out of it for the same price just running one at home" so I didnt bother. Their shared hosting is 10Mbps so Ill stick with that for my friends hosting and my own file hosting. |
Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
No IRC is not CPU hungry and I can run Game Servers from the box if i like (which are definitely CPU hungry) so Im not sure really.

Hopefully if things go well I'll be getting something like this and getting it co-located by the end of next year :)

You can get a eu celeron 5mbit unmetered for under £60 month, full root axx etc.
Out of interest I thought your website was streamlined what uses up the 70gig? |

I do. I do a lot of graphic design and some files can be over 100MB in size in their PSD format. I store them all for future use and download a lot too. |

BTW, the Abyss looks good.....and there is a Linux port also. But, it seems if i read correct that it does not support SSL!!!!!!! The last time i checked co-location might costs more than getting a dedicated server!!! Does not make a sense!!! But this is what I found out!!!! |
Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
Hmm ive seen decent Colocation for about £40/month.
