We live in a far more risk averse climate these days, back in the 60s they would probably have kept the shuttle flying with the foam falling off, afterall, one launch in 200+ was damaged by it so that is a 0.5% risk of mission failiure due to foam.

You may also recall the fire in the apollo missions http://history.nasa.gov/Apollo204/

How long would the rectification of this take now, less than 12 weeks in '67, compare to the last shuttle problem that had it grounded for
(STS 107 1/16/03 > STS114 7/26/05) about 2.5 years.

I'm sure we could take a satelite launcher such as arianne or a US equivilant and mod it quickly to travel to the moon and back, but the solution under design is far more comprehensive than that.

Sounds like a lot of money, but it's an investment.

Most of the contractors involved would be building weapons for the same amount of money otherwise - you only need look at the list of companies.

Which would you rather?

Given that the moon would be a likely good base for the enhanced mice to stage a base station before the trips further afield, IMO it's a good idea. :)

Nasa plans return to Moon by 2020

That's assuming that those willing to spend the money on getting to the Moon would spend it on those 'urgent problems' instead - if they had no choice.

I hope Man does go back there and carries on striving to expand our horizons. I'd rather see us making some progress where we can, instead of banging our heads against brick walls trying to fix things which just seem to defy all attempts at fixing them.

We can't solve war, hunger, flood, drought, earthquake, tsunami, nuclear proliferation, pollution, extinction, poverty, tragedy, death, disease etc. etc. etc. despite all the assurances from different quarters that 'if only' we did this or that, then we could eradicate such-and-such problem forever.

For those that got into buying a star, a piece of the moon, a moon crator, or whatever else, I'm afraid you were conned.
No part of the moon is for sale, or any star.
