Pentium 2 300mhz (First ever family computer)
Athlon XP 2200+
Core 2 Duo E4500 (Overclocked to 2.93ghz)
Core i5 2500k (Never did need to overclock that)
Ryzen 5 3600

I cant recall doing any overclocking to any systems I've built\owned.

My current PCs are all Intel (and a few years old now).

I've never had an AMD PC, but I have a couple of servers using Ryzen processors, and they are awesome.

First PC was AMD, current one is Intel. No loyalty.

I'd want to work out the best bang for buck are purchase time but all components need to support Linux.

When i upgraded from a Ryzen 7 2700x to a Ryzen 9 3900XT i was suprised by the performance increase. It was as if someone had opened a gate and let a raging bull loose.

Re: PC Spec Question.

1st PC I owned from 1989 was a 386DX2-66. Total cost £3,000. £1,000 just for the 330Mb ESDI HDD. Programming PCs for a few years before that, and other systems around a decade before that.

The Linux community is pretty big, so should have most devices covered, and plenty of advice as to what will or won't work.

Things like DVD drives and card readers can easily be external USB devices, rather than built into the case.

My dilemma at the moment is how long should I wait for Intel or AMD to come up with new features. Intel is coming up with systems(Alder Lake) that will support PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 memory. If I wait too long my current 8-year old (Intel i7 4th Gen unlocked) might give up in the meantime.

The first ever PC I had was an Olivelli Modulo M4-40 486SX 25Mhz, 4mb Ram.

Paid around £1200 from the old Radio Rentals for it.

Nothing's bettered the Sinclair ZX Soectrum 48k circa 1982. Programmers needed to work for their space in those days. They're just lazy now.
