Even if the patient didn't want it?

It reminds me of the old saying about love (the romantic kind) -

"You cannot give your love to someone, only they can choose to accept it; and if they don't want to accept it, it's wasn't yours to give in the first place"

And the best way to find out if they want it or not is to ask....

IMO and 10 years NHS experience, this sounds like many of the numerous and ridiculous disciplinaries in order to get someone out, probably her face doesn't fit.

I see patients on a daily basis and i would definitely err on the side of caution in this situation. I'm completely non-religious i do have some opinions regarding certain religions, but this is something i'd discuss down the pub with my mates. Never with a patient for that reason.

A colleague of mine was reprimanded once for advising someone she was counselling to find work, as he was complaining of boredom watching TV all day long. His reply was 'Do I look like a mug?' and then he complained about her. She was told to keep her opinions to herself or lose her job, which is what we all do now. We make no assumptions and do our jobs like lemmings - the great old NHS ;)

What would be more offensive?

Being asked if you wanted to be prayed for

Or being prayed for without being asked, assuming you discovered somehow and considered it inappropriate?

She has a history of pushing her faith on others, which is probably why she asked (to bring the subject up), rather than just quietly getting on with it without anyone knowing.

Over xmas, I was asked by my neighbour if I'd like to go to church with her. I'd rather she hadn't.
Why?
It puts non-xians in an awkward position because while it is normally the case that declining such an offer and exposing a lack of religion has no negative ramifications, it is often the case that it results in offence. To some it's ok to express their religion (because it's the "true" one) but not ok for others to express different beliefs.
Just look at the death threats David Attenborough has recieved simply for not crediting the xian god in his nature programs.

It depends. If that person was the type who was looking to be offended then I'm sure the the latter would be worse. However I'm equally sure that the vast majority of people wouldn't give it more than a moments' thought. Certainly not enough to put a good, hard working nurse's job in trouble.

I so had the urge to click 'report post' on Chris. or go to the PCT this nurse works for and sing in reception a little Take That.... "all I do each night is pray..."

I think the nurse was daft after being told it wasn't appropriate the first time round but suspension is a major over reaction. she should have been sent on a "equality, diversity and act like a robot" course.

She was sent on equality & diversity course for her first 'offence'

When I worked for BT part of my training was diversity and we covered topics such as sexuality, gender, cultures and religions - but nowhere was atheism mentioned. Kind of gives the impression these courses are for PR reasons only than serving any real purpose.

Are you really saying that people can only get offended if they actually want to be offended?
If a homosexual takes offence at being called a "poofta" then it's their own fault for deliberately getting offended?

Are you really following your usual tactic of taking what I say out of context?

None but very few individuals would take offence at someone asking if they want to be prayed for (I have a suspicion you'd know exactly how they'd feel). Asking them if they fancy joining the faith, yes I can understand someone being unhappy at that. But being prayed for, in the person's free time, I'm sure it's just the petty who would want to make any sort of complaint.

It's worth pointing out that the patient in this case was not offended and neither did she complain.
