"Affirming Atheism", what an odd way to put it. As Joan Bakewell said, a christian think tank has donated money just because they think its a good idea. Thats pretty much it, some people think it will has a positive cultural impact.

Ewww I used the C word, I have to go wash.

Personally, I make a point of not giving to religion based charities. The salvation army is one I avoid (the cue is in the name). I think it's a mistake to think that the money raised by this campaign would otherwise have gone to charity. It's one of those things that come along, and you decide to contribute to.

Absolutely right Maggy. The Sally Army do a hell of a lot of "Unrecognized, & behind the scenes work" for their cause. In all my years, I have never ever had one even broach the subject of God. Had plenty of cuppas & days recruiting (Forces) with them too. Children's hospitals & especially hospice`s are very deserving of charity money.

I would much prefer to see buses advertise for them.

Could you clarify your point please, as I didn't get it.

It was the part where you didn't quote.

Although the reference to this maniac is not relevant to the title of this thread, it is very relevant to the subject of God. This boy wiped out millions of people for his beliefs.

Old Adolf was Christian, who felt it was his calling to pursue his beliefs. He was raised a Catholic & taught in a Monastery. We all know what he achieved.

"My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter,
As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people". Mein Kampf.

To the best of my knowledge, he didn't advertise on buses.

Given the very obvious differences between the philosophy of Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler, I doubt many people would seriously claim he was 'a Christian'. Willing to use aspects of Christian teaching to justify his own beliefs, perhaps, but he was a million miles from orthodoxy.

Mind you, it is equally fair to say that he wasn't an atheist (although a number of his henchmen apparently were).

I don't believe any of them advertised on buses either.

It means I think that Goering, Goebbels, Himmler and the like were atheists - some of them at least - but that I haven't checked because it's very late, I'm meant to be in bed, and while my sermon has not been advertised on any buses around here, it is advertised in the churches column in our local rag, so I'd better be a good boy and go get some shut eye, so I can do my best tomorrow.

Many people who openly declare their belief in God, go on to commit Murder.

Many people who deny God, go on to commit Murder.

Hitlers cronies were of all faiths, even Jews, there were also Atheists ordering killings. I think my point is, the only thing you need to be, to murder someone, is to be a murderer.

Faith doesn't have to come into it.

That said, I think the "Hitler" bit should now end, & get back to the thread.

I do too. it will just cause arguments.
If people argue in the Virgin Media groups part of the forum, it's stopped straight away. in say this part of the forum which is out the way it doesn't seem to matter as much.

It's a place where even the moderators let their hair down :)

Well I believe Stalin was an atheist If people are going to quote examples

But I'm going to step out of this thread.

Just amazed at how militant some of you are.I've never felt threatened by religion in my life...or those of a religious persuasion so I'd save my money for something a lot more tangible than an advertising campaign that most fellow atheists won't even notice nor care about.

But then it's not aimed at them is it?;)

I'm going to be staying out of the rest of this thread except for moderation purposes.

That is exactly what I don't like about religion.

I take that view with a lot of people who claim to be christian. I wouldn't want to make any unfair or uninformed comments about our resident bible-huggers, but 9 out of 10 christians I have come across, and I mean people I've had the time to gain real insight into, have turned out to be truly appalling people who hide behind a religious facade, but who in reality distort and pervert the true message of their supposed faith, and they're the kind of people who would be up in arms about an ad like this appearing on the side of a bus.
