i just used apt-get kde-desktop or whatever the packages were. I followed a guide. It was a nightmare getting beryl and xgl to work with KDE, and then after that the gnome and KDE applications were together.

there Is (or at least was) a kubuntu meta package that sets up KDE on ubuntu properly.

As for why the ATI driver didn't work on kubuntu afarid I don't know why that was.

Only two mouse gestures i use are "top left" for expo and "top right" for scale.

We have an older ATi Radeon 7000 in my girls machine there and the default ati drivers work fine with compiz.Dont have to do a thing other than install Ubuntu

Gave me a "no composite extension" when I tried it. Installed xgl and it worked.

I've already screwed up the install though. You can see here if anyone has any idea how to fix it and is quicker than the UF folks :)

Installed today.

Good, so far.

Read/write access by default to my Windows partitions, too, which is new. 7.04 auto-mounted them, but read only. (& I think 6.10 didn't even see them, so I had to edit fstab myself).

Doesn't auto-mount my USB2 HDD though, which is strange. Neither did 7.04. Yet with 6.10, I had no problems with it...



Still need to sort out Compiz Fusion.

I'm using fglrx, so AFAIK I have to install xgl to use Compiz (doesn't work under aiglx using the restricted ATI driver).

Just a thought, but what ATI card are you running? I only ask because I think Dilli said something to me the other week about issues between Linux & ATI cards more recent than the X8xx series.

Installed xgl.


Little info thing popped up, to inform me that there's no longer any need to mess around creating a separate xgl session :)


So it was simply a matter of installing xgl, rebooting, & then enabling the effects :)

X1600XT. Seemed to work fine before enabling dual monitors.

I am having problem with Ethernet, it worked fine in the previous version, however this will just NOT talk to the router, even the light doesn't light up, the driver is installed and configured but it just refuses!

Still running a perfect 6.10 edgy setup with fluxbox/compiz/beryl updates from latest SVN repositories.

So why upgrade when things are running so perfectly ?

I tend to upgrade fully when there have been major glibc changes, so maybe in a couple of years :)

open a terminal
sudo ifconfig

Does it show up there?

Should look a bit like this...

If its showing up but is inactive try

sudo ifconfig eth0 up

(change eth0 to whatever it shows up as)

Have you been into your network applet in the menus and made sure your network card is set as appropriate...ie DHCP?
Upgrade or clean install i have that "roaming mode" enabled and always have to change to DHCP before getting a connection.

Only 2 problems I have come across with the 64bit version,
Gb LAN appears to be running half-duplex (apparently this is something which can't be fixed with the config settings, yet!) but jumbo/extended frames are working OK.
Under compiz when playing a podcast from disk and browsing, Firefox goes into grey mode and hangs after some time, looks like a memory problem but the system monitor doesn't show anything abnormal.
Turning compix off fixes the Firefox problem and puts the system into turbo drive, I think I prefer the speed boost to the special effects. :)

Well, I tried the Live CD of the 32bit version last night, & it was definitely... Linuxy. :D Had a bit of a fiddle with various things, & discovered that Solitaire is just as addictive on Linux. :disturbd: Wasn't able to change to 1024x768 [it defaulted to 1280x1024], presumably because you can't use the restricted ATI drivers unless you're running Linux from the HDD instead of a Live CD [installation of them required a reboot]. I did try to change the resolution to 1024x768, but ended up with a grey background & an X shaped cursor, & nothing else. Fortunately it asked if I wanted to keep those settings & I said no, & it reverted back to the way it was before.

I think I may actually install it on a partition somewhere, but before that I need to shuffle some stuff around, & also want to have a go at XP 64.

As for installing Ubuntu, what's the safest method? Should I create some unformatted partitions with Partition Manager 7 in Windows & then just tell Ubuntu to use them [the last time I tried installing Linux it wanted 3 partitions], or just leave some empty unpartitioned space & tell Ubuntu's setup to use that?

If you dont want to be fiddling around then the safest way(imo) would probably be to just leave whatever space you want to allocate to Ubuntu unallocated and just point the installer to the "largest continuous free space" during partitioning.
Let it do the work;)

If your resizing current Windows partitions remember and defrag a good couple of times
