Dragon - your modem adds around 3dB of attenuation.

fair enough, learn something new everyday ;)

out of interest what does the average dect phone and a Adsl mircofilter do for it

And btw that's on an extension because there's no power socket by the master.

The phone should add nothing, the filter next to nothing.

Can't give you specifics as I can only talk from experience where swapping a cheapo filter for a quality one took a dB of attenuation off, so I'm not going to speculate too much but effect should be minimal as they are there to attenuate the telco frequencies on one port and the DSL ones on another.

I know ;)

I had one in pieces earlier for some reason the electromagnet decided to break off and start rattling around inside it.

Was surprised to find a reed relay in the micro filter :Yikes:

        Statistics              Downstream        Upstream
Line Rate            8128 Kbps                448 Kbps
Noise Margin            10.0 dB                26.0 dB
Line Attenuation  10.0 dB              6.0 dB
Output Power          13.8 dBm              11.9 dBm

When i first got Adsl I got a sync speed of 7616, but then i found that was because someone had put interleaving set to ON, had it taken off and my sync speed went up.

Although 10db per 10km isn't correct there's many more factors that can affect loop loss like the quality of the cabling, Number of joints, condition of the joints.etc, The weather.

yep indeed, I expect in some cases it may be possible to get less then 10db per km as well as over.

Back to the OP, Either he's connected to a very different exchange than he thinks, or they are using tin cans and wet string for a stretch, I'm a couple of km from exchange by road, attenuation about double that of dragon's

Code:

Modem Status

Connection Status                  Connected
Ds Rate (Kbps)                  8128
Us Rate (Kbps)                  448
DS Margin                  9
US Margin                  25
DS Line Attenuation                  20
US Line Attenuation                  11
Trained Modulation                  ADSL_G.dmt

He probably has a very indirect route to the exchange, lots of joints in the cable, perhaps some of those or the cable itself is dicey.

Anyway we cannae change the laws of physics and his line isnt going to get rewired.
