I'd highly recommend an NEC DVD drive - the one that I sold with my previous PC was the best I've ever used, the Sony that I got just to match my case is crap and usually takes several attempts to recognise a game disk.
BTW - don't buy PC2700 RAM, you'll be setting yourself up for a whole load of hassle. Go for decent PC3200, the lower the latency the more the CPU will be able to stretch it's legs. |

It seems a bit of a back to front way of doing things. If I might suggest an approach;
- Decide what you want the system to do specifically - Decide how much money you have available - Get the best you can for your money |

you definitely dont need an X800 though... the sims2 plays fine on my living room HTPC, which only has built in graphics... admittedly on low quality, but still runs along merrily :)
