:D :D , i wonder how much hdd space it would take to store all that info , and as you do not need to have your phoneline connected after a year , how would they collect the info ;) :D :D :D

Depends.. It would take a few bytes of storage per channel change per user. However, there would be billions (if not tens of billions) of changes per year (think of how many times you change channel each day, then multiply that by 365 and the number of subscribers sky have).

The most sky would be able to do is monitor which box is set to what channel (as the box has no way of detecting who is watching it). They would possibly require hundreds of gigabytes to store all this info, but with 250 gigs drive available for around £100 nowdays, the storage is feasable.

They would have no way of collecting the info if the box is not connected to the phone though. NTL is a different matter. They could collect the info.

It's doubtful it would be worth the effort and cost though. Put bluntly, apart from getting rough ideas of viewing figures for advertising purposes, I don't see that any TV company would have any interest in what we watch.

On the subject of data collection, if ntl collect data on people's shopping habits online, whats to say they are would/not on the tv service.

Sorry, but ya wrong! You cannot detect chipped boxes...period
If they are putting noise back on the network, its a faulty digi box and not the fact they have been chipped. I think you are reffering to the "cube" thats use was widespread on GI boxes, that put a spike at 20megs on to the network.
Now the digi boxes can reset themselves, so even the "hits" to disable them don't work!
It would help if NTL, firstly, tightened up the stores process, and secondly, picked up dico'ed boxes :dunce:

I should know, after all,i've only been with ntl for 12 years. :Yikes:

I agree the best way NTL could stop this is to pick up boxes....if people can't get hold of boxes then they can't chip them

OK so what do we know.

1) there was someone asking for MAC addresses here, they have been banned and we have been warned about it, so that's the end of that.

2) Using a MAC address can enable someone to clone your modem & get free broadband from NTL.

3) The rest seems to be developing into a you can't/you can discussion.

He says you can't, he says you can.
I know how to do it & without detection as the information is available, don't mean I am doing though nor would I tell anyone (they can find out for themselves) but do we really need to keep discussing it all.
