Ive just refreshed files that have arrived overnight, its a mixed bag, some new stuff, some have nothing, their still working I suspect.

NTL Servers I use are;

news.cable.ntlworld.ie
news.cable.ntlworld.com
news.ntlworld.com
news.ntlworld.ie
news.virgin.net <<<-- yes its NTL

I havent tested them all this am, assuming there is still work in progress.

anyone got any more?

I signed upto Astraweb last week and its been a mixed bag so far. To maximise bandwidth useage you must use all 4 connections to Astraweb. If you have just one group updating then you'll only get around 50k/s most of the time so ive found out, with all 4 connections in use you get full speed 182k/s. now it maybe Astraweb or it maybe Grabit, because ive just switched over to Newsleecher and get twice the speed with just 1 connection open.

I have found it to slow down quite alot during the evening / night, but it's worth the £8 a month for the unlinmited plan, think i might jump to Clara or a decent euro server if anybody can reccomend one?

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

Ive just done a refresh (5 hours since my last one) on the binaries, there are no files dated 23rd (today), just a few old files from 19th, athough it caught up yesterday it seems pretty dead again today. There is always more than nothing on 25 binary newsgroups, even when its very quiet theres some files and messages.

The NTL service status claims it was all fixed as of 11.15pm yesterday night.

Anyone else have any luck?

If you look more thoroughly, NTL says that it still has got some problems, including newsservers, and it will post next update today afternoon. Last update was today at the morning.

Rather OT, but as I have never used a binary newsgroup (or any other kind), can someone tell me exactly what sort of stuff you download from one? :)

one thing i get, is e-books, there are usually quite a few old SciFi books scanned in as txt or converted to html or one of the various hand held formats, like Lit.

MP3s, pc games, utilities, applications, xbox games, etc - basically just about anything, if you have ever usded a file sharing program then its like that only you dont have to upload (but its nice to share) and you get a good download speed, not the silly 14k/s u often do. Dont upload from your isps newsserver though, youll get threatened!

a good binary newsreader is here -->> http://www.shemes.com.

Any other info you need can be found with a google search!

cheers

Thanks - Gooogling is so much less entertaining than 2-way discussion. ;)

So, now I'm confused, if so much stuff is so readily available on news servers, why does anyone bother about p2p?

I think one reason could be that with p2p you get more choice over what you d/load. With newsgroups you are limited to what is on the server at any one time. It can also be difficult to get large files, as they have to be broken up into chunks & re-combined once d'loaded - just one part missing or corrupted can screw the whole file. All up I think it is probably seen as a bit geekier to use news groups, but they do have the advantage of anonmity.

:D there is certainly plenty of it - one word of caution is that the title of a file may not adequately describe the contents ;)

I'm not sure whether that means you get more or less than you expected :erm: However, I have no plans to go finding out.
