Even if you think you're taking the right precautions, you can still get infected.

Well it's been 3 months and I havn't had any weird activity :)

How do you know? You can't exactly check with your virus scanner can you ;) If after 3 months your system is still free from cookies, tracking data etc then I shall green rep you myself :D
When was the last time you scanned your system for spyware, viri, malware etc?

Well, I just did a scan with Spybot and it only found 4 things (which are the usual ones I find even from using it in a week)

The ones it found were:

Advertising.com
DSO Exploit
"Possible" Extenstion High-Jack

Which I have now just fixed :)

Might want to download and run adaware too, it seems to pick things up that spybot misses and visa versa. Not bad though ;)

I watch what I do, I don't go to websites that I don't know about, I don't accept files that I havn't been told about (like in emails), I don't accept files off messenger unless I know the person is trust worthly (which can take me up to a year).

I always check for updates aswell, but since I'm on 2000 it's very rare that any pop up :)

I'll download and run Ad-Aware actually, might do a virus scan on F-Prot aswell just to make sure (since I havn't done a virus scan in 3 months).

I'll be totally amazed if nothing is found, at least I know the way I work and keep my computer secure actually works :D

If you use Spybot, why not use an AV prog too?

Definitely second that :tu:

Also try....

Spywareblaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Helps "immunise" your PC against spy-/ad-ware in the 1st place.

But it's still *really* worth using an AV prog too Scott.

Spywareblaster is an excellent tool and if you load it on a clean install it can dramatically reduce the ammount of rubbish you have to keep cleaning out :)

I don't like AV software, it uses far too much I/O activity up and causes CPDN to slow down, which I want the max speed out of it. It also slows down the speed of my HDD's as the buffer is being used all the time (which can be bad in games).

You don't have to have it running all the time (e.g. "Auto Protect" in Norton).

You can just do manual scans of things you download etc., & do full weekly scans.

No need for it to hog everything.

Or, at least do an online scan regularly.

It may slow your pc down a little bit but a virus will slow it down even more ;) Just install one and do a manual scan once a week like Matt said, at least that way we'll stop moaning at you for not running one at all :p: Sometimes it's better to be careful and have the tools to hand than to get caught out and have no way of getting access to the help you need :)

Yes but I'm one of those people who like to keep there drive as empty as possible, with loads of memory free (as much as possible) and like to have a SMALL Start menu, not a HUGE one with loads of software in there ;)

So installing some protective software and manually running it when you want to is increasing your start up menu how? You can choose what software loads at start up and what doesn't ;)
Never mind, looks like you just can't help some people :p:

You don't get MSConfig on 2000, so I have to use something else.

Also, I'm not talking about the start up, I'm talking about the Start MENU :)

You might also want to download a tool to protect yourself from the DSO Exploit as well. Because i still got it come up untill i installed a protection tool.

Can you not remove un-necessary entries or idy up the menu by creating folders to group different tools/ software into? I took a badly cluttered menu on a mates pc from 3 screen lengths to 10 folders in about 5 mins ;)
I used to have a piece of software that allowed you to control the start up programmes, This is one and it's 2000 compatible too :p:
