At the moment. Who can say if a warp drive - or some other method of propulsion will be invented.

It is believed to be, although you will have to hope a passing theoretical physicist might stop at the forum long enough to explain why.

EDIT

I don't think the theory has anything to do with available forms of propulsion, I think odd things happen to time, energy and matter when objects get up to that kind of speed.

Which could be why I said 'or some other method' :)

I can't reveal TOO much or I'll be violating the temporal prime directive :D

well thats in space time - you could go outside space time giving the perception ur travelling faster than light such as worm holes - all things in space time are relative to each other in my understanding if u could nip down a worm hole and appear somewhere else quicker than u could by travelling speed of light then ....arghh

ooooohhhh ... ouch ... I'm gonna need another cup of coffee if this is how the discussion's going.

Can't we talk about little green men, that's much easier. Or bluebottles? :erm: :D

Just as long as it's not the aforementioned big killing machines :)

Well Xaccers is a brain box on things like this, where is he when we need him

The faster an object travels, the more massive it becomes. As an accelerating object gains mass and thus becomes heavier, it takes more and more energy to increase its speed. It would take an infinite amount of energy to make an object reach the speed of light.

Google is my friend ;)

There is a whole other thread in this, as more modern thinking, based on quantum mechanics & string theory, suggests for example, that the speed of light is not constant & that there are more than the 'normal' 4 dimensions. :Yikes:

Well, I am no physicist, but AFAIK the only times you need propulsion in space is if you need to change speed or direction. In fact, I did read that if you went into orbit and were able to fire a handgun toward the sun, the bullet would eventually reach the sun (assuming it didn't get too near any other objects).

I personally do believe in Aliens, but I don't know if we have been visited by UFOS.

One interesting thing to note is that a lot of sightings are apparently near military bases, so it's entirely possible that some sightings are actually of experiemental military aircraft (like the aforemention Stealth bomber).

:spin: but why? Where does the mass come from? :dunce:  :erm: :( :disturbd: :Yikes: :monkey:

its to do with the equivalence of mass & energy & their relation to the speed of light, the classic E=mc² (Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared) applies to a stationary object, it gets a little more complicated if the object is moving...........

It's the main reason why, imo, the concept of some kind of 'warping' of the space/time continuum is necessary to travel any useful distance.

And on that note - my brain has just turned to mush

Admit it, you haven't got a clue either ;) :D :spin: :spin: :spin:
