I think your analysis of what would happen if MS were to pull out of Europe isn't particularly likely. The more probable situation would be that there would be a time of readjustment, which would be a huge desruption, while all existing MS products are replaced with alternatives. Because of the vacumn created, a hell of a lot more research would be done, improving them for use in everyday life. I.e, Linux on the desktop would be sped up a lot.

Arguing that, I can see that it is bad to have a homogeous environment where one product dominates because of the dangers if that product dissapears/develops a major fault. It is exactly those resons why I think that a controlled market is better than free trade. From my perspective I believe that free trade only serves in the long run to stifle cooperation and creativity and reduces consumer choice.

Then they'd get import duty slapped on the top, the products seized if they don't declare them. No legal recourse if the software causes damage. No technical support etc :D

In all honesty do you really think people would worry about that though. I wouldn't. I'd have Windows over Binux anyday

I think most companies would worry about it. As for individuals, a major reason why Windows is the prevalent OS for home use, is quite simply the fact that it comes pre-installed on most pcs. If another OS were to be installed in it's place, I doubt many people would think of changing it and any replacement OS would most likely be mostly indistinguishable to the average end user. It would be a change about as significant from an older version of windows to the latest version, people adapt and get used to it.

Aww sorry, we've hijacked your thread :) I'll start another one entitled 'I prefer my OS because...' later, just as soon as my mouse batteries have recharged and the cursor doesn't keep jumping over the screen :D
