Well on the 750k to 2mb upgrade i remember i woke up in the morning of the first upgrades starting and looked on here hoping to find a way to upgrade without having to wait the whole month.
Everyone on here was saying if you use the upgrade service http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservice...entUpgrade.php and type in ur details and then click next it gives u the option to go to 2mb from 750k. I did that and got 2mb instantly on the day the upgrades were first given out and did not have to endure the long wait for it to roll out in my area... Hence why im hoping tommorow morning when i wake up i will be able to do the same :). Maybe im just too hopeful :P
Anyone who was on ntl at that time will back me up that you could upgrade manually. I dunno if it was the same for the 3mb to 10mb upgrade as i didnt pay much attention to it as it wasnt my package but if it was, im sure it will be the same for this one.

I think you can only do that if you aren't already on the tier - so it will only be of use to those on the bottom tier.

If Scotty was working at NTL I belive the expression that would be used would be ""She canna take much more!".

Either this will all go wonderfully and every 2mb customer will get 4meg and be able to take full advantage of it or........
The whole network will grind to a halt for everybody and this site will be full of people complaining about not getting their full speeds on any package ad infinitum.

Hold onto your britches!

Horace or some areas will go smoothly and other areas will start to have contention and areas that already have contention will get heavier contention.

Or shaping will kick in same day and things will go somewhat different.

I think that's because NTL now bill you a month in ADVANCE (you should have got a letter explaining this), so you're paying for June before June comes along, hence you're seeing 4mb on your bill.

Not sure if have just cost myself some money, Recently upgraded to 2 mb, Awaiting 4 mb roll out. Went onto the upgrade page and entered my details. Was offered the BUND03 Service, No cost was mentioned on the screen. Pressed continue, Advised modem would reboot and then would be at new speed.

S**T looks like i have gone to 10 meg, Config file shows 10240000
Will my package price increase ?????????

What Is BUND03 ???????

lol -owned!

Seriously - can't believe all this hype. All this "I want 4mb straight away - should I phone CS in the morning" cr*p is really getting boring.

Wait and it will come - so what if Fred down the road has been upgraded and you havent but you're still paying the same price. This upgrade is being done for free and I really dont think that waiting a week or two even is going to really make that much of a difference. You're not exactly losing out on anything - just not gaining something. There is a difference.

/rant mode off

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Well said MagicMan, the sooner people accept the rollout will be taking place throughout the month of June the better. Endless speculation just clogs the forum up with useless posts.

The only things we know for sure are:

1. 2mb will be upgraded to 4mb.
2. It is scheduled to take place during June.

Anything else is just speculation/rumour!

Trust me

Within 2 days all you will get on this forum is the sound of

A. Teddy hitting the wall.
B. Dummy being spat out.
C. "to the sound of someone jumping up and down and shaking fists" But i want it know.

D. If you dont give me it now i will leave. and do all of above.

We will have seen it all before. And see it all over again and again and again.

I bet you now that the first post will be about 8.10 tomorrow morning just after the first call to NTL CS to demand a upgrade or they will cancel

Give it a rest what use is 4mb if 2mb is crap!!

Peak time on 2mb in Manchester is a joke downloading sound card drivers at a whopping 5.2KB/s that is 2mb.

Think NTL need to sort the network and get staff to look after it before they upgrade.

You must have been downloading from a slow web site, can't blame NTL for that.

I have had 2MB broadband and the 750K before it for years and baring 2 to 3 days in total never had a problem with the speed.

lmao - ok then. What about "throwing their Air Max Hoodies out of the pram then" :-p

Getting back on topic (oops) - cookie_365, try rebooting your modem and seeing if you've been upgraded. I would but I'm in the middle of a download and dont really want to start again. Although, If I've been upgraded I could stop it now and then restart at twice the speed and theoretically finish it before I would have done had I still been on 2Mb!!!!

What, you mean I have to DO SOMETHING to get my upgrade? For crying out loud, it's already a quarter of an hour into June and now you're saying that NTL won't upgrade me unless I faff about with my modem?

Well, I am in the Birkenhead Merseyside area and still no joy after all this waiting;) I don't want to sound like a sad old moaner but i'll probably be the last on the NTL schedule for upgrades( hope and admin from NTL is reading this). I understand it all takes time and next time they upgrade wouldn't it be nice if they said nowt and we all just got a surprise one morning. Anyway not worried about the upgrade just yet, it is, after all only first thing in the morning and CS are prob still in bed dreading all the calls from irate customers saying He's got it up the road and i aint 'Why not'. Remember it is a free upgrade and so was the one to get us to 2mb as was the one from way back when it was 600kb i think to 750kb. I think the price has stayed the same £24.99 since i joined NTL with 128kb and that was lightning then.

Keep it up NTL you have my vote and thanks for the freebies along the way.:D

I think NTL could save themselves a lot of unnecessary enquiries if they published a rough rollout timetable and gave updates so that customers could see how the rollout was going.

In that way customers could see that it was not worth enquiring until after a certain date had passed and they were not getting the service provided by the rollout.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

well it's good news that we are getting upgraded for free but once again NTL just can't seem to handle this properly

some communication on where this will be happening in each region would be nice plus details on whether we have to reboot our STB or cable modem

it's great that they are rolling this out but it's still done in a slap dash fashion and we have to check ourselves to see if we are upgraded rather then them telling us which isn't right.. what about all the people who don't even know about this forum and other sites like this

I think you should be more concerned about more important aspects of this upgrade - ie. what infrastructure investment is being done in order to make it work.

I have to say that I do actually agree with this statement, although I have to admit the reason they (NTL) have most probably kept it all rather hush is to avoid a HUGE onslaught of phone calls asking when its all happening.

Well a time has been given already, some time in June. You do not have to reboot anything, if you needed to you would have been told that you do. You'll be brutally torn away from the interweb briefly and when you reconnect you'll have the upgrade.

Well all the people who don't read this forum will have received some marketing material informing them of the upgrade, and I think details were printed on monthly statements as well.

I don't really see the major problem with this and think it's all just a symptom of impatience. Nothing wrong with that but no point in getting too upset and trying to make the cableco out as being incompetent for not giving an exact date for each area, especially as areas may be done in sections so it'd just create more grief as one person in RG12 has upgrade but another person in RG12 doesn't as they connect to different bits of kit at ntl one of which has had the settings changed and another which hasn't.

ntl are likely to roll this out in phases to each area anyway just to monitor the impact on the networks of the upgrades and make sure that it's around the levels they were expecting. Something ntl don't want to do is to open the taps and have everyone get just a trickle as there's not enough capacity there.

In some areas I expect also the upgrades are pending capacity increases and as soon as the capacity upgrades are done so the tier upgrades can happen. To promise a date on these then have the capacity upgrade fail for any one of the number of reasons a resegmentation can fail and delay would cause more complaints than being vague.

Some fair points there I have to say...

oooh am I sitting on the fense or what!?

Might try sitting on the modem for a while, see if that helps.

Its just the 1st June they sent emails out a couple of months ago! they said they would roll out the upgrades through June and by the end of June all 2mb would have been upgraded to 4mb.

God guys give them chance

OK, just an update from me..

I rang CS and was told if I upgraded from 1mb to 2mb I would get 4mb, not 2mb.. I told her I hadnt heard of anybody getting their upgrade to 4mb yet, but she insisted she had the option to make the modem either 2mb or 4mb.. I went ahead with the upgrade, and needless to say, I am now getting 2mb, not 4mb as promised.

But atleast she gave me 1 month free (for the upgrade, £7), so I guess thats something..

As some areas are starting o get the upgrades the billing system will already have been changed to show 4MB instead of 2MB. However that doesn't mean you will get it straight away. there are still 4 weeks of June left so just wait and you will have your speed increase.

Yes I know, its just that fact that she insisted she would upload the 4mb file to my modem - so wasnt just a billing/label thing. She was clearly wrong. I just have to sit back and wait now I guess. :)

Out of interest what physically takes place during a roll out of upgrades such as the one we are all sitting back and patiently waiting for at the moment?

Im not talking about massive details, im just interested as to how it all happens?

Anyone?

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I might be wrong, but physically, not a lot, somebody hits a button which TFTPs new config files to the modems in a certain area, they check to see if there are any problems, if not roll onto the next area.

Firstly the uBR that's having the upgrade done is given a new profile with the new speeds on it.

DHCP servers are then changed to point to a new modem config file for 2Mbit customers, then modems are disconnected from the network. When they reconnect they either pick up the new file with its' corresponding uBR profile already ready as above and there ya go.

Slightly simplified but that'll do ya.

I receive the below message when logging into NTL, however even after powering the modem off and on, I am still on 2mb. Spoke to tech support through NTL medic, however they have not been too much help as yet (after 26 minutes).

Steve

Staff really shouldn't tell customers that it'll be happening on a specific day. During 3 different calls (for unrelated matters) I was told the upgrades would be rolled out today and everybody should be upgraded (which I didn't believe for one second). And yes, I did ask if it was going to be on the 1st and not 'by the end of June' to my suprise, the answers were 'yes, on the 1st' each time.

thanks james.

you would have thought that at least one set of uBR's would have been set by now even though theres a full month to go before we need worry.

its always possible that someone has already been upgraded and not posting here, but still, there are a lot of people reading these threads, so perhaps not.

regarding the uncapped 10mbit, is that all the people on that package can expect, or did it get a confirmed upload upgrade too, i would consider going to that option if it did better uploads than 512k/s, but i presume its not,so stay as i am in wythenshawe for now.

You may have been told that the roll out is on the 1st of June but doesn't roll out suggest that it is gradual, it does to me. It could be rolling your way very soon but don't hold your breath as it could be a very slow roll on a slippery slope.:dozey: Just think of it as a bonus for good customers and you will be happy like me and NO I have not been upgraded yet I just seem to have more patience than some.

Hear that NTL i am sticking up for you so come to the birkenhead area soon please lol

Surely it would have been more sensible for NTL to say "All customers' packages will be upgraded by July 1st" ;)

Yeah... I can't blame them for the slow roll-out, but their communication sucks... especially for a communications company!! :p:

EDIT: I can't believe i said "sucks"... god, am I turning American or what?????

a week to do 10 areas... mmmm, fishy!! (cue obvious grimsby joke!)

I'd say that is either unrelated, or it's that their network needs upgrading first... i can't believe they gonna roll it out like this everywhere.. would be too slow.
