looking at the ntl service status it really goes into some deapth to disclose exactly what the problem is doesn't it

NTL Broadband internet customers across the whole country may currently be experiencing problems in browsing to web sites. NTL is aware of this issue and working to identify and resolve the cause as quickly as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Browsing Issues - general pishiness

Detail

"King of pop" Michael Jackson was spotted earlier today carrying a Maplins toolkit whilst loitering next to an NTL junction box in Ashby De La Zouche. When challenged by local dogooder Gladys Ponsonby-Smythe III the international superstar laughed manically, spun around three times and made his getaway on a nearby parked childs tricycle. NTL have contacted local police forces who have been pursuing Jackson across several counties this afternoon. Broadband internet customers across the whole country may currently be experiencing problems in browsing to web sites. NTL is aware of this issue and working to identify and resolve the cause as quickly as possible and we have vowed never to buy another Michael Jackson record. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

ive posted this before, but im pretty sure changing DNS servers for webbrowsing (on port 80) will do absolutely nothing. As you are still forced over the Cache servers, which do there own DNS lookups (not using the ones you specified).

To fix the issue you would have to change to a public proxy

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

This has probably already mentioned but here's a refresher for those with DNS problems (this used to happen on a regular basis, for me anyway):

(This will fix the problems with not being able to browse certain websites for those that don't know what DNS is)

Use BT's nameservers, they're stable and have good uptimes:

nameserver 194.73.73.94
nameserver 194.73.73.95

I think a quick google should tell you how to set them in Windows. I use OpenBSD so I'm not sure.

Unreliable, yet again

Is anyone else sick to death of this ridiculous poor service that we pay for?? I come back from work today, desperately needing my broadband connection to book flights and arrange a holiday with three other couples on msn to ensure we all agree with the choices of villa etc and what do I find? This must be at least the 15th time in the past few months that I am unable to access certain essential sites? What are they doing and why am I paying £25 a month for it? I fail to understand why they can't be anywhere near as reliable as their competitors. I see people saying there are ways to get around it but I can't get them to work. We get nothing achieved by ringing the technical help that now they have the cheek to charge for and I am now looking for other cable providors of cable broadband with a view to cancelling in the next few days (I'm in the Lower Earley, Reading area if anyone can advise better providors that i can use?)

I needed to get this off my chest and feel (very slightly) better now.

NTL, pull your finger out before you lose even more customers.

Da1 area is playing up tonight, this web page is taking almost 5mins to load,
Current speed test says
Tue, 6 Jun 2006 19:32:50 UTC
1st 512K took 984 ms = 520.3 KB/sec, approx 4287 Kbps, 4.19 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1000 ms = 512 KB/sec, approx 4219 Kbps, 4.12 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1250 ms = 409.6 KB/sec, approx 3375 Kbps, 3.3 Mbps
4th 512K took 1032 ms = 496.1 KB/sec, approx 4088 Kbps, 3.99 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 3992 Kbps, 3.9 Mbps.
I thinks its about time that Ntl are taken to task over this abysmal service they are supplying.

Today the internet ran fine, no problems most of the day. Around 7-8 the internet started to cut out, Google loads but can't do any searches, can't visit GMail, yahoo very slow and the images don't load, MSN messenger fails to login.

NTL really do need to fix these problems, with the poor connectivity I can see some people moveing to BT.

All i am doing is using a petition from within here and on MSN list to build up a number to slap in the face of their CEO. Ive had words with the CEO before about NTL issues, if you dont want to sign it dont, but its not going to do you any harm to sign it. Least i am actually trying to get NTL to face up to their contract.

Its worth a Shot............

Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude, I just didn't understand what you were doing but I do now.

No its ok im just trying to get them to give us a service by slapping a 100 signed people petition on his desk one Monday morning, see what he will losse if he doesnt resolve the problem.

I got 6 months free BB last time i wrote to the CEO with my intimidating letter, i told him he sorts it or i goto BT and the local paper after they ripped up my lawn.

The petition i made will go with a letter just as in your face.

:tu: lets get it moving over the net, 100 be awesome, 500 i will need a new printer ink :)

Signed it. I can't understand why any NTL customer wouldn't sign it. Get the numbers up - it might make the news!

QUOTE from service status page.

"Update 21:00 - Issues appear to have been caused by a failure due to overload of NTL's DNS servers.

Browsing is slowly returning to normal, however it is unlikely that services will be fault free until morning of 7/6/06 "

You have to use it without any proxies, thats the only downside.

Seems to work here if I just browse through my own IP address.

Well ive contacted NTL to see whats what. Its getting silly now and im getting a right old ear-bashing from the missus as I stupidly suggested we added the Internet service to our acc.

Cant help but feel we are all paying for ****e right now.

Give NTL a chance for gods sake.!!!!!!!!!:erm:
As soon as so much as a rumour of something for nothing comes along, everyone wants it NOW,NOW,NOW!!!!!!!! Be Patient.;)
It comes to those that wait.:)
Don`t forget, You have a choice, if you don`t like the service provided, **** off somewhere else and stop climbing on our tits and making a pain in the **** of yourselves.:D
Most of the people on here who complain about NTL`s service have not bothered to set up their PC`s or Modems or Routers properly and then blame the service provider for shoddy service.:dozey:

You could have the perfect PC - Cable Modem setup - not much you can do when ntl has problems with their own DNS servers. I think you went a tad OTT there. :erm:

You seem to be hinting that we are having issues with the 4mb upgrades.... we are ALL infact discussing NTL's current poor form with regards to the frequent service cut outs and breakdowns.

To quote a well known English phrase 'Up your ****!'

 What?

Bearing in mind this thread is about (currently) 3 major nationwide apparent DNS outages affecting all NTL's customers, you've slightly missed the point.

I don't overly care whether I get 2/4/10mb speed or not, what I would like is dependable browsing and for NTL to invest some of my money into it.

It's a two way street Budweiser. If NTL provided a stable service then people wouldn't be behaving as you describe.

In fairness in this instance NTL have admitted it's a fault at their end - caused (allegedly) by Michael Jackson.
