Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I have 1MB BB, Family Pack and 321 phone line. I was paying close to £50 per month but phoned last September after seeing an offer in the shopping centre and they offered me 1MB for £9.99, which I accepted. I then noticed an offer in December for 1/2 price family pack for existing customers (still showing on their site (http://www.home.ntl.com/page/existing_fampackoffer - offer available to those customers not on a Family Pack) - I phoned and after some discussion (as I was already on Family Pack and at first CS claimed I was not entitled to it until I pointed out the wording on their website), the normal CS put me on this deal.

I am therefore paying £30.99 for 1MB, Family pack and 321 (plus coming to the end of a Onetel deal for free evening and weekend calls for one year). Is this still a good deal or should I be contacting Customer Retentions for the Talk Talk price match which will upgrade my BB speed - I have read the thread and can only recall one person mentioning that they got the TT and Family Pack - have others managed to get this and if so, at what price please (West Yorkshire)? The offer on Family Pack will finish at the end of next month and if other offers are available now, or then, that mean faster broadband as well I would like to get them (and am happy for my phone calls to be included as well now that the Onetel deal is finishing). The only complication may be that the broadband is through a Pace STB (still C&W branded as had for years!) which I understand cannot cope with faster speeds?

Many thanks
MrB

Plus it is a good starting point for bargaining later.

I really don't think I'll be keeping the TV for much longer though so I'm loathe to put much effort into getting a better package for that. However they'll get a chance to bribe me to keep the phone before I change back to BT.

It sounds good to me since muggins here is paying £17.99 for 1 MB. Not for long though,I've just been onto my online bank and pulled their direct debit payment and wrote to NTL GHQ to terminate my contract. I've had enough of honest long standing customer exploitation.

I don't blame you really, I'm still mad that I've been paying full whack all this time. All this bartering bluffery isn't the modern way and makes me feel distinctly uncomfortable. It's just a bit odd, unofficial pricing - Make's you feel like you've got to be alert the whole time, making sure no ones getting a better deal than you.

dooper, I'd be inclined to ring cancellations and plain tell them how you feel. Don't bluff about cancelling, but tell them WHY you want to cancel, how it's unfair to offer existing customers deals like these in a back handed fashion. You'll probably be offered a decent discount and hopefully they'll get the message. Up to you though. The cut deals are ruddy competitive and actually match the service I receive.

Just seems odd that even when you're actually SERIOUS about cancelling you're not willing to give them an opportunity to 'sort you out'.

I DO admire your principles though and I agree with them to an extent.

Read back through the various posts to see what people have been offered. A good deal is one that you're happy with. Of course this changes when you find out what other people are paying and recieving...

This has got me thinking - I have an NTL cable modem as opposed to Internet access through my STB. If I increase my broadband speed will I have to change my modem or can I carry on using the same one?

Hi there

I'm in a similar situation to you but got the discounts last August when I actually did want to switch (rather than just ringing up trying it on with no intention of cancelling), so I was caught off-guard when he came back with discounts! :D I decided to take the discounts and stayed with them. I currently pay £28.99/month (£9.99 for the BB and £19.00 for the TV and phone) plus call charges.

Got a feeling that they probably wouldn't go any lower than these prices but may up you to 2mb with no extra charge. I'd be interested to see what you can get.

I'm quite happy with what I have, and the price - the 3 for £30 thing doesn't interest me as the TV package isn't as good and I hardly use the phone. I might see if I can get my BB increased to 2mb though.

Let us know how you get on.

Suze

NTL Home 100 are really old models of modems, however, i think they do support 2Mbps, the only tier i think they struggle with is 10Mb (i htink)

Yes, it's been slow, even on my Telewest connection.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Thanks. I got this in 2002 so yeah, it is pretty old.

Back in the day, I remember my ex getting BB and buying the modem outright, earning himself a lower monthly sub for the Internet access. When you cancel your BB sub, do they take your modem away? Presume they are meant to remove all relevant equipment which you haven't bought, but I've seen loads of STB on eBay so maybe they don't bother sometimes.

Sometimes they arrange collection, and well, just don't bother with it. Other times they tell you you can keep them, and of course, other times they reclaim them. The ones sold on ebay however will never work on the NTL or Telewest system again, and are most likely being sold illegally as they still belong to NTL or Telewest.

I rang today to cancel as i starting to think NTL are less than competative with regards pricing and was given a fantastic deal.

10mb Broadband, talk unlimited 24 and line rental all for £27 per month.
I've been with NTL for 8 years and allways taken the top broadband package and this has made one very happy man.

Cheers to NTL, long may it continue :o)

I'd wait until your next bill comes in before you start whooping with joy.

Cue conversations of "No Sir/Madam, there's no record of any conversation between you & 'Fred on ext 123456789' on 08/05/06 where you were offered 10mb Broadband, talk unlimited 24 and line rental all for £27 per month"

If the my bill arrives without the promised reduction, i will simply cancel as i first intended to do.
It's NTL's choice, hold on to a long standing cuctomer or wave bye-bye.

I won't loose any sleep.

All you have to do is ring them back and ask them to check your account, they should see the discounts. I'd also get the names of whoever you speak to.

Just been to my banks website and the DD has gone out for my 2mb BB and it is what the guy told me £12.49 instead of £24.99.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

i rang ntl last week and got them to price match me the tt offer and to cancel the tv (as we dont use it much)
so they gave me 20.99 for 10mbit (straight away), tu24, phonline. which i am pretty happy with.
now ntl customer relations called me asking why i canaceled the tv ... said i just dont use it ... he 1st offered me 9£ for tv .. than after still saying i am not bothered he knowcked it down to 5£ for the base package.
so now i am on 25.99 for basic tv/tu24/phoneline/10mbit boradband. and he did confirm the changes all from before. so all in all good deal .. will probably still cancel the tv next month and get a 2nd phone line instead.
he also made clear its no contract and the offer is valid for 6month after that he can extend or do a different deal.
They are price matching like mad .. he would have probably given me the tv for free for a month .. just i guess i am to nice ;)
the 10mbit is very good as well full 10mbit in my area so over all i am really happy, good serivce nice price. (i guess my next bill will tell if i need to call and have a go at them for actuly not changing it, but so far it all looks good).

I think you know that the CS rep meant it wasn't a new 12 month contract. I also think though that you won't let a simple truth get in the way of a dig at CS reps.

well not really as it is an "offer" .. i am not obliged in any way to stay with this offer and can cancel it at any time or change it. the offer has a valid period of 6 month. there is no contract extension involved. as I am now just about 11month with ntl (initialy signed up for 3 for 30£ offer/contract). I guess you can call it a month to month contract as i can cancel ntl with 30days notice. but any transaction of some sort is a contract .. an offer is a sub class of a contract if you accept the terms .. same if you buy a BigMac at McD .. you agree on a contract to exchange money for goods/service ..

I have now pulled this months DD (which i accept they are due) and wrote to cancel via recorded del. I expect I will get their full attention later this week...

decide what is the most important and push for that .. if you want fast bb .. or more tv stuff .. but i am sure they will go as low as 1/2 of ur bill now. I was averging about 60£ and now should averg about 30£ isch ..

stuartw101 09-05-2006 18:00

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I managed to get some sort of discount, after ringing them up.

Before:
1 x Family plus Sports and Movies - £52.50
4 x Additional Set top box rent - £60
1 x 1MB BB - £17.99
1 x Standard 321 telephone - £0
1 x Line rental with tv pack - £0

Total: £130.49 (not including calls i pay for)

After:
1 x Family plus Sports and Movies - £42.50( 6 months only)
4 x Additional Set top box rent - £45
1 x 2MB BB - £12.50
1 x Standard 321 telephone - £0
1 x Line rental with tv pack - £0

Total: £110 (not including calls i pay for)

Do you think i could have got a better deal? If so what could i try and get? I can't see how i can get a better deal as the tv package is the same as sky's price wise i believe, sky charge £10 a box so thats almost identical. Maybe i could get a better telephone package for free?

Thanks

wait till next month .. it is probbaly true i would think as they charge in advanced. give them the benefit of doubt and wait till next bill .. wright down names of who you speak to, and ask allways that they confirm the changes on your account.

I got the following packages at the moment:

Family Pack £30.00
2mbit Broadband £24.99

I'm going to want to cancel the digital TV (gonna get Sky!) so what kind of deal can I expect for 10mbit broadband and telephone (talk unlimited 24 + line rental)? £20.99?

I seriously am considering TalkTalk but I've been with ntl for over 10 years and if they can match the broadband and telephone with them for me I'll be sticking with ntl.

Also, whats the latest cable modem ntl are giving their broadband customers? I'm currently connecting through a Samsung STB but I won't have that much longer.

i had a simular situation, cancel tv keep bb and phone, they price matched the talktalk offer 20.99 for 10mbit, phone, tu24 + 5£ for basic tv. so 20.99 should be your aim for phon/bb ..

but if you are going with sky for tv .. sky is going to offer a very competitive adsl/tv/phone packge in the near future (next few month i would think).

as I was paying £10 a month they're getting the same money and unless I become more interested in the internet thus using it more, the profit is same as before.

Seeing that you spend so much, you should get a better deal. Just make stuff up, i.e. you called talk talk and they will give you 6.5meg (confirmed with talk talk on phone) SKy are offering you free STB subscription?
They should offer you something better after the rep sees your monthly outgoings ;) Give it a try, you know you want to.

I'm not sure you can get much discount on TV when it's including movies and sport because they have to pay a certain amount to Sky. You've got half price Broadband and free line rental.

Can't you get Sky? You'd get better value if you need multiroom, they only charge £10 for each additional box and the software/hardware is VASTLY superior. Plus if you really can move then they might offer you a lower price.

I make it at £42.50 + £10 per each additional STB (£40) = £82.50 which is less than you're paying now.

Basically, all you can do is play the barter game with them on the phone.

What's the lowest anyone is paying for Family+Sports+Movie?

Also, you can always look back through the thread.

Not particularly impressed with this so will ring back later, to say I've reconsidered my cancellation. I REALLY AM considering getting rid because SKY is the only way to get "Match Choice" interactivity on SKY Sports. Plus I want a decent STB and Sky+ is that. So unless they virtually give me TV for free, I'll be leaving. As long as the 2mb>4mb increase comes on time, I'll be happy. £12.50 for 4mb broadband isn't bad at all.

Lets just wait and see what my bills say first...

I get the impression though that you can ring these guys as many times as you like - as long as you dont agree to new contracts (they dont take contracts seriously anyway). I'm actually eager to have another crack at it now.

LOL

The TV went off for a few minutes just now, and when it came back on I realised that I've got Sky Movies now.

This is a pleasant surprise as when I was talking to the guy I only mentioned the Sports package. He said I'd get Family+Sports +321phone for £30 a month for 12 months no contract. I'd better check what I'm down for tomorrow and how much for. Hopefully I'm being upgraded to TalkUnlimited too. If I'm not, I'll push for it when it comes to deciding whether to go to Sky or not.

I'll report back tomorrow.

Hi rang retentions/customer care and was offered 10meg for 6 months (to be reapplied after 6 months if i ring). said it would take 24 hours to work through the system. 24 hours later still not applied so rang again, this time 10meg was applied, however when i confirmed the price, i was told that it would be £18.99, not the £17.50 "price match" i was told about the previous day. He did say that he couldnt appy £17.50 as the system wouldnt let him. so how on earth are people getting all of these different prices/deals on their accounts.

Standard ntl I'm afraid.

It's the classic "Tell the punter what he/she wants to hear to get them off the phone" scenario....

As has been said, there's nothing they can do with the TV packages - quite simply, they don't make money on them anyway. How about a further discount on the extra stbs, and maybe asking for TU24 or something for your phone?

Thanks for everyone's replies. Yeah i think i can get the STB price down to £40 another saving of £5 as it will match sky's £10 a box.

I have seen people have been getting the talk unlimited 24 and BB for around £20 or so, but we phone mobiles more than house numbers, could they do free calls to mobiles included or instead of house numbers?

I'm not sure on the mobiles front, i bet it's worth a try. If they ask why you want furthur reductions on STB's tell them about Sky, and that they're looking a little better right now than they are... Might persuade them a little ;)

Yeah, we pay around £10 in calls a month anyway and pay £12.50 for 2mb BB. Dunno if they could do any better as tt is for free calls and upto 8mb for £21.50. I guess i could try and get 10mb and tu24 for £21.50, this would save me a little i guess on my monthly calls.

I just phoned retentions, I'm not actually an ntl customer and don't live in an ntl area but they have agreed to pay my Sky+ and DSL subscriptions for the next year, plus I phone their 0800 number then they transfer me to the number I want, no contract, on condition that I consider using ntl when I move home.

Yes I'm being ridiculous, but then so are they with the deals they are offering and it's only service quality that'll go up the spout.

stuartw101 you may want to consider visiting http://www.moneysavingexpert.com where you'll find many posters who spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to save money. You are spending far too much time on this though. You're probably better off spending your time researching alternatives, and just call them back and say you aren't happy with the deal offered.

Honestly if they can't spot what you're doing phoning them back to try and get more discounts a few days after the last call they really are hopeless, and it wouldn't surprise me if they don't. I believe retentions people get paid more for throwing discounts at people anyway, so you'll probably have two happy people having gotten paid for 'retaining' you. :)

A reminder to all posters though: These idiots aren't asking you to agree a new contract, get your deal and make sure you phone them up when it's over to get another one!

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I rang this number to see if I could get an extension on my current offer.

The simple conclusion to this was that I'd have to ring back closer to the date of expiry on the offers, and that he wouldn't be able to offer me any discounts on Sky Sports in the future as they rent the service. He said they would happily extend the 1mb £9.99 offer but only for 3 months :/

Not very happy with the result I got on the phone today, but I shall do what he said and call back at the beginning of August.

when I rang customer services a couple of days ago after I said I wanted to cancel but before they transferred me to retentions they offered to extend my £9.99 for 1mb broadband to 'forever' as it was about to expire.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

How long was it until it was about to expire? Mine expires 6th August, so it's quite a while yet, I guess that's why he didn't want to do anything. He was fair enough and told me to ring back again closer to the date and whoever answers will be able to offer you something.

His reasoning for not being able to extend the offer was because he said if he put the same offer on again, it would give me double discount. Didn't make much sense to me as I thought he could just cancel the current discounts and reset them up, adding the months up to the date they currently expire. I accepted what he told me and agreed to ring again another time.

I also asked if instead of other offers he was throwing at me, including TU24 for free for 3 months, could I have upgraded broadband speed instead. He told me he would have to up the price aswell as the speed.
The guy you spoke to said he could give you 10mb for £10 you said in a previous post due to being a customer a long time, I've had all 3 packages with them since 1997, and still they seemed to only offer me "3 month trials".

you only get the 'best' offers if you get transferred to retentions by customer services after you've said you wish to cancel. when you're transferred your details aren't passed - you're just put to another phone queue and then have to say that you've been transferred and give your account details again so you could skip customer services and ring them directly. When I got transferred I then waited in a queue for 10 mins and the phone was answered by a retenions receptionist who said he was picking up my call just to let me know they would be getting to my call as soon as possible and sorry for being busy - he asked why I was calling - I said because I wanted to cancel due to the talktalk offer - he said "oh, well when you get to speak to someone we wont be able to match that".

10 mins later I spoke to someone and was offered a deal to keep me as a customer rather than lose me to talktalk. obviously I view this as excellent service and good reason to forget about talk talk.

customer services had definitely offered to extend my 1mb for £9.99 deal immediately I called which in my opinion was also excellent service.

you may think this is madness to be offering such deals under the counter but the fact is bulldog are enabling here shortly and will be offering their '16meg' product (which is actually upto 24meg).

note I think their staff sometimes refer to retentions by other names eg customer relations.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Hello, i just thought li'd put my thoughts in.
On Thursday 11/5 i rang retentions and they offered me a deal, saving £29 per month overall. This seems fair. The retentions op i spoke to also said that because they were upping the BB speed to 10 meg i'd have to have a modem installed, and that an engineer would call me to arrange this. I did not request a modem, I was told I needed it.

On Friday the engineer rang me to say the appt was for friday afternoon. "No good" I said, there's nobody in and that an appt had not been arranged with retentions. He then said he could sort it for the Saturday morning between 8-1. Saturday cam and no one showed up. at 1pm i rang CS to be todl the appointment was booked in for the afternoon. "No good" I said, "I've got stuff to do and i've already been housebound for 5 hours. I requested that they call the engineer to confirm what time he would arrive. I was told they cannot do that (which i know someone can as they've done it before). After a bit of steam letter, the agent then told me that in fact no one would be arriving on Saturday afternoon as the appointment was for the previous day. Needless to say, this wound me up more. I said that i would be contacting them again on monday to cancel my services.

As of now, no one has contacted me, and i wont be able to put it in writing until later, so I wonder if someone will take the time to call me to apologise for this bumbling idiocy. Mistakes are easy to make, but then to refuse to sort out the issue and try to blame me for missing the non arrangement appointment is appalling.

We'll wait and see...

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I looked back through the thread (all 20+ pages!) as suggested by one poster but saw few references to deals including family pack.
Ideal scenario would be 10MB, line/TU24 (to match TT - could do with International for Ireland, USA etc as well :p:) and Family Pack - has anyone got this specific deal and what price did they manage to get?

Area seems relevant, so in Leeds, former C&W (BTW - a little of-topic but why do Telewest have billboards in Leeds in residential areas when it is not even available here  - seems a waste of money :erm:).

Many thanks

Many thanks

I spoke to a very nice lady in CR this afternoon - mentioned that I had received information on the new Talk Talk offer and did they have anything to match this. Offered:
10MB - £9.99
Talk Unlimited 24 - free
Family Pack/Phone line - £20.25
Total £30.24

I suspect, as I didn't mention it specifically, that the Family pack offer will come off next month (on 1/2 price for 6 month offer) therefore may have to phone back. Is this a good price or could I have got it cheaper still?

Also forgot to ask how long this would be on my account for - bother - another 25 minute wait but worth the effort.

I have to wait for a cable modem installation as apparently my STB cannot take the PACE ...

If you are happy with it, I would think it is a good price, everyone seems to get a different deal.

From my experience I expect that TU24 will be free for 3 months, I'm just hoping they don't try to charge me for it after that because it exceeds the cost of my calls!

As noted earlier, phoned Wednesday and spoke to CR - very helpful - matched TalkTalk. Said that someone would be in touch to install a Cable Modem. No phone call but NTL Engineer called in today and set it up (luckily MrsB was in!). So, in theory, now have 10MB for £10 - result (though doesn't seem much faster?). Will call next week to ensure it has been applied to my account (as would not pay £35 for this - I was reasonably happy paying £10 for 1MB until the market went much faster!).

Not a bad payout for a 30 min call

Or it wouldn't have been if that's what i'd got.

My 2Mb BB was for 6 months and my TU24 was for 3 months - not a major problem, I'll just ring them up again in a couple of months to extend - or leave whichever takes their fancy

The MAJOR issue was this....

Firstly, they performed a part-month upgrade to TU24. Although they added the discount from the beginning of the next month, they failed to add the discount for the remainder of the current month - so my "Free" 3 month TU24 actually ended up consting me money. This was quickly solved with a call to CS - though i'll have to pay it and get an account credit, meaning that this month's bill is actually considerably MORE expensive than before I called......... (partially due to the details below)

More difficult was the fact that instead of upgrading my 1Mb to 2Mb, they added 2Mb to my bill and left the 1Mb on there too - so I was paying 12.50 for half price 2Mb, PLUS 17.99 for 1Mb ..... Doh.

On the initial call to CS where I sorted out the TU24 rebate, I also got them to address this. 2 hours later my internet access died completely. My router picked up a 10.0.0.0 IP address, but the registration page refused to accept my PID. After being bounced between Tech services and CS for about 45 mins, I was eventulaly told that TS needed to send a refresh to my STB to re-enable the broadband access. (why can't TS do this? - seems like a standard fix) I suspect that removing the 1Mb from my account sent a "disable" signal, even though the 2Mb was still on my account.

So, lessons learned

1) Ensure you check your bill after discounts have been "applied"
2) Some problems can be resolved by getting CS to send a refresh to your STB
3) prepare .gif file, clearly indicating the relative size and position of **** and elbow for CS - they appear to need one.

Seems to be one slightly confusing area in these delas - i.e. the international package.

I beleive NTL do a crappy discounted international calls package, and they also now match the TalkTalk free international calls offer if you and lucky when you play teh NTL discount game. I haven't been able to find any info on the NTL version of free international calls, so I called to find out exactly what they give you.
Seems to be good news - they offer free calls to 30 countires rather than TalkTalk's 28. Tried to find out what the extra countires were - one was India. The other countires are basically most of Europe, US, Canada, Australia and NZ.

Well I've resisted calling Retentions up to now to get unethical offers when I've no intention of cancelling, well not the broadband anyway. That was until I saw the ntl and telewest web pages today... TV, Phone and Broadband for £15 for three months for new customers...

I've been a cable customer since the cable was first laid in my street 15/16 years ago and never gone for these offers. I have seen over that time how ntl/telewest et all treat existing customers as opposed to new customers (a bit like banks, new customers get better interest rates..) so I thought, my turn...Did have 10mb broadband, but got that reduced to 2mb (soon to be 4...) with talk unlimited for a snippet under £18 for 12 months. Plus half price line rental for 12 months too. So that's about £5 off my tv/phone bill as well.

No more ethics... I've joined the low-life majority and am better off already... The rule I've learnt (and its only taken 3 and a half decades to learn it..) is that ethics and money don't mix. If you can get a better deal for yourself, do it. Now for changing that HSBC account next...

...and who did you call to get your discounts, considering there's only one department in ntl that deals with this....?

Fair enough...But if anyone wants to say they're whiter-than-white after reading this thread and knowing about the deals retentions are offering. Well, perhaps they should think otherwise before posting as such...

I've joined the scumey majority and although I'm not proud of it. I did it, and my wallet is better off for it.

if you dont talk about cancelling then you wont get passed to retentions so you wont get the best deals.

Well I don't think I did bad out of it and I never once said I was thinking of canceling.

But I do think that it is nice that after all my years of loyalty I am being given some thing back :)

Surely it is unethical to line the pockets of big companies run/owned by fat cats who make people unemployed by moving their jobs to India?

I'm still wating for caller ID here so I need discounts to justify taking a substandard product too.

Comments like that are NOT welcome on Cable Forum. Any repeat of this will be dealt with.

I don't see that it fair to blame the workers as in this instance they are only doing what they are told

i dont think there is anything unethical about saying you want to cancel - it's business. you say you are considering leaving and they offer you a better deal.
anyway, since my "deal" they have left me waiting for a an engineer that didnt show and then didnt discount my bill... what was that about ethics?

Hi, I've been reading cf for ages but 1st post :wavey:
Thx to the cf team for such a great resource and can happily say that I was on base dtv pack, 2mb b/b + my phone line which was costing me about £45pm but now have TU24 + 10mb b/b for £22.50p m! I ditched the dtv as I have a new tv which has freeview and is plenty for me.
