Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

This post I will start of with some gratitude.

Thank you to Jill at ntl and to the cableforum team for getting me reupgraded I am now back on the top tier and happy again :)

Concerning the speeds, earlier around 6pm just after I was fixed my speeds on adslguide were what the modem can do around 4.5mbit, but I noticed ftp and http getting very low (lower then what I had on 2mbit) so I did another speedtest and got around 1.5mbit, I am not going to moan a big deal about this tho for 2 main reasons.

(1) We need to remember this is still in trial phase as classified by ntl and so they know and expect things to improve.
(2) I am seeing tons of maintenance notices on the ntl status page for my area so when these stop appearing I will review my situation again and see if its better.

I think I read on another thread or forum that ntl are garantueeing 3mbit burst (after the trial) and speeds are only upto 10mbit will will probably be in quiet periods of the day, and even I do not expect 10mbit speeds all day every day. For that kind of service one should expect to be paying a 4 figure sum each month.

They appear to be doing some shaping which is good as ssh isnt lagging too much for me, and pings are fairly stable as well it is just throughput.

ugh this is ****ing me off everytime I phone up for 10mb I got the old "wait till december" but some english guy was going to do it and then came off with the december stuff... am I blacklisted or something... I am in belfast and have seen 4 people (including a mate) get it already :'(

I just keep getting "Its a Trial and for new customers only". No fair :(

Has anyone in Belfast got an actual speed higher than 3mb yet? I got the upgrade on the 8th, but i'm still seeing about 2.7mb max.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I just phoned again and got "Yea sure give me a minute" ... waits a few mins on hold ... "Ok you should have 10mb now just restart your modem. So I restarted my modem while he stayed on the phone. It didn't work, I was still on 3mb. "Oh sorry, you can't get it yet. You will have to stay on 3mb".

Now to be honest I was in shock at this point. Why do non of the CSR's know what they are talking about? I mean seriously, every single one gives a different answer! As well as the above I have had:

Not available at all
Not available in my area
New customers only
Trial only and you can't join it

Ah well, off to work!

I'm not disagreeing with you on the fact that we would all like the new speed, sure. But some of us are capable of comprehending the criteria put down by NTL. The only confusion that has arisen is due to overzealous customers who can't wait longer the about 2.2 seconds before bombarding customer services followed by venting their anguish on here with tails of "It's my right to have it….", "It's so not fair…", "NTL are the very essence of evil...yadda yadda...".

What I am finding so hard to comprehend is why is it so difficult too wait a month of so? Going by some of the comments on here regarding inconsistent speeds it wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Face it; NTL cs is a complete shambles.

I'm in Cambridge and on the 1Meg for £17.99. I called on Saturday and asked to be put on the 10Meg. The woman said "sure I'll do that for you now" when i asked to make sure there wouldn't be a price increase, she told me that would be £37.99. I explained that i'd heard that if i have a 3Gig cap (or some low cap) on the 10 Meg then there would be no price increase. She puzzled over this and then asked me to hold. She came back and said "right that's all done for you". I asked her to confirm there would be no price increase and that I would still be paying £17.99. She confirmed this was the case.

My suspicions began when I finished the call by asking if i needed to reboot my modem, and she said there was no need. I lost all connection over the next 15 mins or so, so turned off the computer and modem. When i turned it on again, the connection was back. Aha I though, this will be my new higher speed. I'd just like to point out at this point that I've got the NTL home 100 cable modem, so wasn't really expecting the full 10Meg, more like 4 or 5Meg. No chance - my speed was exactly the same as before. i.e 1 Meg connection (i checked the modem settings) with a max speed of about 740k.

I called cs back and got some sarky Scottish kid. Who, on telling him i'd checked my speed witha variety of speed checkers, laughed and said all speed checkers were a load of rubbish. I explained that while I know they are not that accurate i should at least see some speed increase going from a 1 to 10 Meg connection. This seemed to confuse him and he responded by saying I've only been upgraded to the 3Meg connection!!! I then asked him why my cable modem still said it was set to a 1Meg connection, and he said he could send an engineer round but if they found out my modem wasn't faulty they would charge me 50 quid!! I explained to him this was unacceptable and I wasn't saying my modem was faulty i was pointing out that I hadn't been upgraded at all, depite their insistance that I had. Utterly stumped, he then transferred me to Techniccal Support. I got through to some woman who sounded like she was on the moon, but who i suspect was in America. She took my MAC address and confirmed that I hadn't been upgraded at all and that my modem was still set to 1 Meg. She suggested I waited a few hours as the upgrade may take a while to come through.

It's now Tuesday and I am still waiting for the upgrade I was told had been done for me. I'm still on a 1Meg connection and still only gettting speeds of about 740k.

NTL cs haven't a clue what they are talking about. Unfortuantely I've been with them for a few years and have had nothing but problems everytime i speak to them. It amazes me how they are allowed to continue to tade.

PS what's the betting I'm now paying £37.99 for the privilege of spending hours going through this rubbish, with the outcome being that I am still on my existing 1Meg connection, never getting anything higher than about 740k.

There are only 2 possibilities here... either the CS representative you spoke to thought you wanted to upgrade to the top tier 3/10mbit in which case you will now be on £37 a month.
Or, you are still on 1mbit and £17 a month.

The 10mbit rollout for the lower two tiers is not until next year, so moving from 1mbit to 10 is impossible without paying the top tier price and upgrading.

Well, I'm not in CS ... but I have it from a good source there will be such a tariff once everyone is migrated to 10meg. Service will be based on download limits rather than bandwidth. ;) Don't know how the CSR in this case managed to set it up like that today though, I suspect someone got confused over the details of an internal briefing. It wouldn't be the first time!

Snip

.

you wont be getting your upgrade for a while unless your willing to pay for it, no matter what youve heard....just read through this thread a bit & you wil see that the only people who are getting the upgrade are those that either willing to pay for it ( go onto the top tier £37.99 ) or those already on the top tier, & some are those are having difficutly in getting it...

Yes, There is only 1 tariff available at the moment for the 10mb service.

Just rang up ntl cs to ask them about my 4mbps download speed as opposed to the 10mbps speed i should be getting and the guy on the phone said the speeds should be more accurate come or after december the 1st when im presuming they automatically roll the 10mbps service out so all looks good here.

But as far as current tariffs go, 10meg @ £17.99 doesn't exist, does it?

I just changed from STB to SACM and got my 10Mb upgrade, even though the lady on the phone told me I wouldn't have it until December. I didn't even ask, I only wanted my PIN number. LoL

Here's my speedtest results.

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/sp...d6e478ef5f4d1d

Nice speed :D

Had a bit of a rigmarole transferring my old email address and webspace over to the SACM Account, but all that is sorted now.

I'm still a very happy NTL Customer as I have been for 4 Years now :D

Cheers NTL and thank you to all the Support Staff and the nice Tech in India who sorted my problems. :D

It certainly doesn't, so far as I'm aware. The customer in this case may just have got himself on the £37 tariff, unless the CSR he dealt with was somehow senior enough to set some kind of special negotiated deal ... if that's even possible.

Just a thought!

If nothing has been finalised regarding 10mb, do the people who have been upgraded from 3mb (me) have a 30g or a 75g cap? because I wouldnt like to be bitten on the ass by NTL for 75g when I am only allowed 30.

HEY GUYS,

Yesterday i called ntl and a stupid woman answered, i asked that i wanted 10mbit connection because my friends have it, they said that it was only a sample amount of testers that have it in my area, i asked for a sacm (i'm currently stb) and they said as my stb was fine i had to pay £50 for installation, so i put the phone down!

Today i called again, i asked if 10mbit was in my area, they said only testers have it and that i can't, i then asked if i could have a sacm and he said sure we can just change the way you recieve the internet for free (pakistan guy), he then put me through to sales (i thought the sales guy would deny that it was free) , the sales guy instantly said "So you want the 10meg?" i replied "indeed i do!" he's arranged for my modem to be installed on thursday for free and 10mbit upgrade!

funny what you get depending who you talk to!

God you people would think you were all hard done by!! Stop pestering the poor CS staff, most of them won't know about the 10MB as its not officially available to all custs so they probably won't have been given the training on the service, so stop giving them a hard time.

You have all been informed that it will be automatically upgraded at no change in price. Just give NTL time to sort out the network and arrange for it all to work smoothly before coming on here and moaning that you've been told different things and that your not getting the full speed all the time.

Good things come to those who wait.

I was very careful to state "overtone" which by definition is an implication or a hint at something rather than an explicit comment.
Uneccessarily pointing out the sex and perceived racial origin of anyone in such a negative context is bound to come across as such.

Anyway, explinations aside, can be get this back on topic now please.

Refering to a person in a foreign call centre as "pakistan guy" is hardly offensive, espically considering what some people say about the UK CS staff over at the ntl cable TV forum...

Anyway this topic is drifting from the 10Mbps broadband discussion, take your disputes elsewhere:dozey:

My post had no intention on being racist, the reason i mentioned he was pakistani was from reading past posts that people had recieved bad information from those overseas and in this case he had great information!. I called the woman stupid because the great sales rep i spoke to today said she was and appologised on her behalf! and she was incredibly rude to me for no reason.

I have the upgrade, i sort of cheated the system, i was connected to my 3mb broadband via the set top box, i cancelled my account a few days and said i wanted a modem installed, so they came today and placed it so i have to cancel my account with the set top box and register a new one with the modem, hence i got the upgrade.

Well I got upgraded yesterday as it seems a few people in the area have been done, so I thought I'd phone up and see. The chap I spoke to was very helpful and apologised that the upgrade hadn't gone through automatically as he seemed to think it should've. I have a Terayon TJ210 and despite information in this thread, I can confirm that my one at least can cope with 10Mbit. I get 1.1Mb/sec downloads from my news-server and Fileplanet. The guy on the phone said in theory the Terayon's could cope with 38Mbit. So there we go, 8 years on and still happy with NTL :)

I think that the point trying to be made is that anyone who doesn't read these forums would know nothing about a 75GB cap.

If a customer used the internet upgrade option, there is no way they would know about the new cap. There is nothing on ntl's website, there is nothing in the T&C's & nothing in the user policy.

Get this............
After reading posts about how nice ntl cs staff are (spoke to about 10 in the last 2 weeks and only 1 was nice!) reguarding being upgraded to 10mb bb, i thought id call there bluff.
I phoned up saying i was a new customer, gave my postcode and said i wanted the fastest speed you have, He said 10mb and i said are you sure.He said yes and couldnt wait to get me an install date, i made my excuse and left(that line is straight from the news of the world :) )
So armed with the response that i can have it,i phoned ntl cs up asking to be upgraded. Shock horror- "sorry sir that speed is not yet out", I told him about what sales said and he **** his pants and said that it as because my modem might not be able to handle the new speed,Now then, ive only been with ntl for 1 1/2 months so i have the new 250 blue box. He cut me short and said hang up and redail but press option 5.

When I finally got out of bed this afternoon I found a message on my NTL phone answering machine from NTL. It said I'd been upgraded to 10Mbit and should reboot my modem. I have the ntl home 200. Anyway I didn't both rebooting it. I now have 10mbit. :)

Why? Which ADSL provider is going to give you 10 Meg in the next few weeks? :dozey:

Interesting. If I go to the TierMigration page I can upgrade myself from 2Mb to 10Mb, but at the 3Mb prices. I suppose that does not stop me from calling NTL cs on or after the 30th day to ask my tarriff to be put back down to £24.99. That's should just lower my monthly usage allowance, but not the speed.

I called CS this evening 7:30. I said i was on the 3mb service and was enquiring about an upgrade to 10mb. She said the 3mb people are getting upgraded first and said she could do it for me right there. i was shocked and said i thought it was december. she said they have bought the date forward.. Apparently ive been upgraded and she said its a £30 upgrade charge.
She said it should be instant. ive rebooted my modem 20 times in the past 1 hour 30 mins hoping but nothing yet.. Hope its done by the time i get home tomorrow.

When i browse to the modem it still looks like iam on 3mb service :s

Well, if you go to NTL's sign-up page the only products on offer are 1Mb, 2Mb, and 3Mb, with the usage allowance on the top tier as 30GB.

The page also says 'Coming soon 10Mb Broadband with 75GB monthly usage allowance!'.

And if you go to the Ts & Cs page again there are only the 'old' tariffs.

I can't find any indication anywhere that by upgrading to 10Mb you agreed to any change of conditions. Nowhere in the Ts & Cs does it mention 75Gb allowance.

So with my semi-legal cap on (sorry Nug ;) )I would suggest that since where the Ts & Cs refer to the usage allowances they make no mention of the tariffs you lucky 10Mb people are on, therefore no usage allowance is applied to your tariff and that you are therefore on unlimited BB.

Enjoy it while you can ;).

I was on 8mb adsl

And you soon will be on 10Mb cable. The way I see it, that's 2Mb more than you had.

I think you're probably right, they don't talk to each other (sadly common in any big company), but if you're currently on 3Mb, you will get 10Mb very soon even if nobody in customer services knows it (and plenty of them do know it, that's how some of the members here have managed to get the upgrade).

Why not keep trying - eventually you might get a CSR who'll do it. ;)

Ok 2 bits of good news :)

1 - Thanks to Jill again I have a 250 modem and an engineer fixed some loss with my line, this has improved things during peak time for me by a considerable amount.

2 - I asked the engineer some questions and the part of Leics near braunstone park will have broadband by xmas if the trial that starts next week goes to plan, which is good news for my sister :)

bund03 is the top tier. So it'll either be 3mbit or 10Mbit.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

it seems like it's like this...
if you're on 2mb and you want 3mb, if you do the thingy, you get 10mb...
if you're on 3mb, you have to find a nice kind person at CS who will oblige...
also, it seems hit and miss as to who is getting it, what modem you're using and where you are.
It also depends if you get the indian call centre too..
Either way, if you're on 3mb, unplug modem for 15 minutes and see if when you plug it back in if you get extra speed..
I've all but given up really... I'll wait until I dont' get error messages on the tier page, and they update the information on their website so people don't' have to sit and twiddle their thumbs or get antsy with CS...
We'll get our upgrade soon enough I guess... just wish there was more clarity and people knew what they were doing at NTLs end.

i think "from wednesday" because last week when the notice of major work on the network in england appeared on the server status page people started to report faster speeds were there were none before, now a week later they add a second notice listing other parts of the country including belfast.
No other reason. not that im in any hurry but it just seemed to be similar in pattern to the previous week with various parts of england. Time will tell.;)

Give the network time to settle down, we are only on trials at the moment, NTL can reduce our speeds if there is a problem with the network.

I was getting a sustained 1100 - 1200k/sec last night on an ntl:200 :D

The major factor here is the bandwidth offered by the remote server.

Despite several customers claiming to have been told that it is for new customers only the http://www.home.ntl.com/page/broadband3 page only lists 1, 2 & 3 Mb tiers with "Coming soon in 2005 - up to 10Mb at no extra monthly cost! Watch this space." being shown. I would have thought that would have changed to show three tiers with the top tier being listed as up to 10 Mb if it was the full blown launch.

I'm using an NTL:200 modem and getting wildly fluctuating speeds.

My own test is using something like Azureus and grabbing programmes from UKNova. I can see other peers getting speeds of over 1meg - yet I don't seem able to get anything over 350k. I have tried all sorts of setting to no avail.

If I use Robin Walkers speed test, I get anything from 2 to 10 meg within the same test. It seems too random.

I don't really know where to look to grab something I know would top me out at maximum speed just to see.

I'm in Manchester and notice others with the same modem and living close by are getting maximum speeds no problem.

Others have suggested that Robin Walker's speed test isn't reliable for 10meg because its sample size is too small. Head on over to www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp and give that a try.

I installed a NIC last night (i've been using USB connection to my modem) in readiness for the higher speeds that are on the way  It's up and running fine, but i was wondering about the Duplex settings. It's a basic 10/100 D-Link Network card going to the NTL: Home 100 modem. I'm on the 1meg connection (despite being told they had bumped me up to 10Meg, when i asked for it on Saturday).

At the moment both the modem and card are set to auto-detection, as this was the defualt. Would it be beneficial to change these settings? I think i read on an NTL help page to set both to 10 half duplex?? but not really sure why?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

I live in Farnham (Sandy Hill!) and had problems with the connection since last night. Went and checked the upgarde options once it was working and upgraded from 1meg to bund3. There is no price on this option, am I going to get stung for 38 quid? Speed is definately 10meg round here now!

2 Questions:

1) What is the cost for 10 meg at the moment
2) Are there any download/upload limits in place at the moment?

Thanks, good luck in Ash Vale!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

The 3 and 10Meg are one and the same at the usual 37.99 I think. Until NTL provides some sort of webpage to monitor your useage it will quite hard to truely enforce but I suspect they will roughly inforce it. I think the limit for the 10Meg will be 75gig per month.

NTL will swap your Terry for a new modem if it can't cope, or update its firmware if that's all that's required. You'll know when this has happened because your downloads will get a lot faster. ;)

UBR stands for Universal Broadband Router. You don't need to know which one you're on, but you're on Bishop's Stortford uBR 3 (bsfd3). You can see the full details by clicking Start > run, typing 'cmd' (without the quotes) and typing 'ipconfig' (no quotes) - (only works if you're not using a router).

If you click on File > Preferences...then click on "Your Information" tab, you can click on "Custom Connection Settings" to enter your download & upload speeds in seperate boxes. They have to be entered in kb/s, which would be 10240 for download & 512 for upload.

:Yikes: I think youll find its not a download limit its a usage limit of 75gig. That means down and up are into the 75 gig so if you only download youll get 75gig if you upload as well you goto split it with your upload amount.
say you down/upload 50/50 thats 37.5gig down and 37.5gig up.

Dont look that good now does it.
