Hi - I'm new to the forum but have the same issue. Been fine on NTL120 cable modem up until December. Now locks up intermittently everyday, especially when I'm working from home and VPN into work. Is this a power or firmware or device issue ? Many Thanks

:welcome: to the forum. I am not an expert, but those power levels look wrong. Have you reported a fault to Virgin? It looks like an engineer might be needed.

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

Not reported it yet, just thought I'd post the details first so that I could make sure it wasnt something obvious. I'll report it today and let you know.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

Hi,

I just had the same problem with my Ambit 120 rebooting itself. I could reproduce the problem by quickly opening about 15 web pages at once. 90% of the time it would reboot itself.

I phones Customer Services and said I could make it reboot by doing this and they arranged to send out a new cable modem. A nice new Ambit 255 (maybe a 256 how do you tell?) arrived yesterday and after a MAC activation phone call is working great.

The exact same thing was happening to my 120 at the end of last year. Not sure what caused it but once i had my modem upgraded to a new 255 the problem went away.

Received ths today from Tech Support via email.. ..

Hi

by the sound of things, I think you have a faulty cable modem, we
will need to arrange for a engineer to come out and replace the cable
modem. please call 0906 212 1111 for a resolution, you will be credited
for the call.

Happy Days

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

Have been having connection drops constantly for past couple of weeks, and no firmware upgrade. Still on ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr.

Usually drops without warning... Could be when checking emails, browsing website, or torrenting, so it doesnt seem that theres anything 'triggering' it on my part.

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

This has been happening to me too since just before Christmas (ntl:home 120), never had any problems before and only usually when Utorrent is connected, but has occured even when just browsing. Before I contact NTL could anyone tell me if my power readings are within normal parameters....

Downstream Receive Power Level : 19.79 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 34.43 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 37.00 dBmv

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000 bps
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr

Many thanks in advance

I've been posting on various threads about this for some months.
For 3 months I had connection problems. eventually, I got an engineer who swapped my 120 Ambit for a 255 Virginmedia modem, after months of being told there was nothing wrong with the 120.This engineer said that the 120 was basically obsolete, as it could not accept the latest software upgrades.
Immediately I got the speed I was paying for , and reliaility once again.

There used to be a posting on here which said which modems were capable of which speeds. It too said the 120 needed to be changed for anything above 2Mbps.Such posting seems not to exist any more.
Pulled at Virgin's request as costing too much in replacements, maybe?Or is that just me being cynical?

We don't pull posts unless there is a clear violation of the site's terms and conditions.

In general, the 120's can't handle the 20 meg speed (I believe they *can* handle 20 meg, but not reliably thanks to a recent change that VM made in the setup of the network).

I'd say that VM need to replace the modem.

They are Docsis 1 and classed as only 12 meg capable, only Docsis 2 modems are classed as 20 meg capable on the Virgin network, so if you upgrade you are entitled to a new modem.:)

Actually, Chetnet (a site run by an ex NTL network engineer and generally a reliable source of info) says they are capable of 20 meg..

I know the site and its pretty good, but as I posted above it runs on Docsis 1 on Virgin therefore only classed as 12 meg capable by them.

My information is as up to date as it can get, a bit like benmcr.

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

I phoned this morning after my modem constantly rebooting when large amounts of data would be sent back n forth. I was in work, and the woman wanted to conduct tests on my modem, which was off. So after phoning my mum to get her to switch the comp on...by which stage it was 3:15pm... I phoned back, a list in hand of all the lights that were on/flashing so I could inform them. I explained the situation again to a different operator, and asked what the chances were of getting a replacement modem.

"Yes of course, I can organise that for you"

That was it, no questions, just a "Was I sure I needed a new one". I told him I had had that modem since I first joined them about 4 or 5 years ago. He agreed saying the modems life spam is normally about 3 years. I should have this in 2-3 working days.

Happy days :)

It just depends who the Tech is who receives your incoming call:)

Re: ntl home:120 hanging from today

Modem came yesterday, plugged it in, gave VM a call to register MAC address - which involved the girl having to call me back after 5minutes because they had a new system in place ... - but after about 5mins it did start to work, the registration page wouldn't come up for me, but i think it was cus it was connecting through my router, so plugged it in directly and it works a treat :) No more cut-outs hehe.

FYI, its the Ambit 256 model

The VM network today only runs DOCSIS1 or EuroDOCSIS. There is no DOCSIS1.1 or DOCSIS2 on the VM network to the best of my knowledge.

Moving onto the speed issue, have a look at this news item from VM:

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers...atus/ambit.php

It states:
Quote:

After further investigations we have now concluded that there may be circumstances where Ambit 100 and Ambit 120 modems do not meet the performance criteria for the Broadband Size XL service.

We recommend that any customers who have either of these modems now request a cable modem swap-out in order to get the maximum performance from their broadband connection.

The Ambit 200 modems meet the specified performance criteria.

Published on 06 August 2007
The Ambit 200 may indeed be DOCSIS2 capable but as the underlying network doesn't run DOCSIS2 today it doesn't make any odds. It just happens to be a newer, more capable modem. Also the maximum downstream speed of both DOCSIS1 and DOCSIS2 is 38Mbps under perfect conditions after removing the DOCSIS overhead.

If you're trying to run 20Mb you'll be better off with an Ambit 200, 255 or 256. For a while there was a method for getting a self install swap out through the website because that's what I did. I can't find it now though.

I do not know why you posted all that because I am only stating the Official Virgin Media line as to their recommendations.
